Report My Loss is used by thousands of people each month to securely and conveniently submit details of lost items, from phones and laptops to jewellery and bikes. It can surprise people that Report My Loss is not publicly funded and why there is a fee for the service. Lost property reporting is not a statutory duty of policing, so many constabularies no longer undertake it. When you create a new loss report, it is placed on a secure database (the police NMPR system). The lost item can then be searched by police and lost property offices nationally, increasing the chances of recovered items being identified and returned to you. In the event of needing to make an insurance claim, Report My Loss certificates can normally be used in place of police loss report references (which many forces have phased out). Report My Loss should only be used for accidental losses. If a theft has taken place, this should instead be reported to the police force for the area in which the crime took place. They will be able to provide you with a crime reference number.

Paid a small sum for the loss of a mobile phone. No help then found out the company had tried to take a monthly subscription fee of £30 / month from my bank.

Hi James,

Very easy to use

Very easy to use. I wouldn't report any item that has no monetary or sentimental value however, because of the £5.95 charge to report a lost item. In my case, in order to get a replacement for my lost item, I had no choice but to officially report it as lost. Using the report my loss website was so convenient, rather than approaching my local police station directly
