A choice that is not a choice is manipulation

I chose Sagic a couple of years ago because I wanted to insure my house with an ethical company.

When I came to renew this year I found that the checkbox to accept or deny the retention of credit card details, already set to accept by the company, was impossible to uncheck. I had to complete the transaction and then search through my account settings to turn this off. In my opinion this kind of thing is sharp practice, more common with certain manipulative retail giants.

I may reconsider my choice in future years, especially as Sagic is definitely not the least expensive option.

    All great so far!

I had never come across SAGIC when previously looking for home insurance quotes but found them whilst looking at the Which? Recommended Buildings Insurance best buys. I ran a quick online quote and looked at the policy details and it seemed really great cover at a very competitive price. I also really appreciate the ethical aspect too. I called customer services just to check a couple of details and they were really helpful and courteous. No long hold queue which is really something these days! I’ve purchased the policy online which was all very straightforward. So far so good and hopefully it will be just as good an experience should I ever need to make a claim. I’m hoping not to though!

My 80-year-old grandad was left fighting his insurer after over 400 volts went through his home

I’m 21 and I’ve had to deal with this for my 80-year-old grandad. I honestly cannot believe how badly this has been handled.

In January 2026, there was a serious electrical incident at his home. The neutral wire had melted, the meter cover was damaged, National Grid attended, and over 400 volts went through the house. Electrical items sparked, banged, smoked, burned or stopped working. The electrician made it clear how serious it was, and we were told that if it had been left longer, there was a real fire risk.

This is exactly the kind of situation you believe home insurance is there for.

Instead, my grandad has been left chasing, waiting and trying to prove everything over and over again. SAGIC acknowledged the claim in January, but engineers did not come until around April. Before that, an 80-year-old man was expected to put together an asset list with makes, models and serial numbers for damaged items across the house.

When the engineers finally came, I do not believe the inspection was anywhere near good enough. Some damaged items were barely looked at before they moved on. From what I saw, parts of the inspection felt rushed and surface level rather than a proper check of the damage, even where items had sparked, burned or stopped working after the incident.

At the visit, there was even discussion around damaged items and possible replacements, so it is even more frustrating to now be told the damage was not caused by the incident without us being given the full report or proper reasoning.

Even after the visit, we sent further information about faults and damage, and it was left unanswered. We were expected to provide evidence, but when we did, it was ignored.

We were then told on the phone that although there had been an electrical surge, the damage was not caused by it. We were also told that some items being “old” was part of the reason. That feels like a convenient excuse. Age does not explain multiple unrelated electrical items failing, sparking, smoking, burning or showing faults after over 400 volts went through the house.

We still have not been given the full engineer report or a proper item-by-item explanation.

This has caused my grandad a huge amount of stress. He is 80 years old and should not have to fight this hard after something this serious happened in his home. I expected far better from a home insurer, especially one connected with the Salvation Army name.

A formal complaint has now been raised because we do not accept how this has been handled.

After seeing what my grandad has been put through, I would not recommend SAGIC to anyone.
