A lifetime ambition achieved

Since I was a child listening to family & my godmother speaking Welsh, I've always wanted to speak it myself. However, because of poor performances in French & German at school, I believed it would never happen. Then I stumbled across Say Something in Welsh (SSIW) on the internet, tried the one sentence starter. After signing up & completing the courses I now regard myself as a Welsh speaker.
The way the courses are presented & the help from the brilliant tutors & other learners have got me to a point where I regard my lifelong ambition to speak Welsh achieved, although I continue to learn more, as is the case with all languages.
I visited Wales last year & was able to hold conversations in the guest house we stayed in, in bookshops, supermarkets & with staff at Caernarfon Castle.
I send my heartfelt thanks to SSIW for getting me to where I am & recommend the courses to anyone who wishes to learn a language. Diolch yn fawr iawn.

I highly recommend their material. I can’t wait for their German course and will dabble in everything they offer.

Fast and enjoyable way to learn to speak

I had studied other languages before at school. But I remember very clearly that the first time I had tried to speak with native speakers outside the class, even after 5 of 6 I had a real hard time understanding and making myself understood. At least for English and French, because with German I never managed to speak even at a basic level. Then as an adult I got curious about Welsh language, and this self-study on-line method seemed a good way to give it a try: I could learn it from anywhere, at my own pace and stop if I'd find out that the language - of which I had no previous knowledge at all, except having heard a few songs - was not really for me.
To my great surprise, not only I enjoyed it all very much, I even managed to be able to communicate with native speakers, when I visited Wales a few months later, better and faster than with all previous languages! Of course it was very basic, but really effective and I really have to credit the SSi method for this.
Looking forward to see a German course and see if I can learn to speak at last after so many failed attempts!

This method really works

This method really works. On top of that, everyone involved bends over backwards to be welcoming and supportive, and to make the whole experience fun, interesting and relevant by offering learners lots of (optional) opportunities to link up with each other and with Welsh culture. The SSi method is especially good for those who need to fit in their learning around the rest of life, as it's all done online at your own pace. There's also plenty of support for those who have specific questions or want to bounce things off other learners. The focus is on speaking Welsh, and some more advanced learners combine it with separate grammar work and / or traditional classroom learning with more writing, but this is entirely personal choice. The lessons can be accessed on a laptop or phone (although the Android app doesn't allow me to see the vocabulary for the lessons which would be handy). If you want to learn Welsh, there's no better place to do it in my opinion.

Great way to learn the spoken language

Say Something in Welsh is a great way to learn how to speak this language. It bypasses the grammar (which may be important but can be learned elsewhere) and gets you speaking the real "on the street" language from the first lesson. It's fun, and it's supported by a wonderful on-line forum which is a great place to make real friends and practice your Welsh (or any other language) with them. Highly recommended.

Learning Welsh made easy.

This method of learning Welsh is the best way to learn how to speak Welsh. There is no writing and no reading involved to get in the way of speaking with a very natural accent. I started learning almost 11 years ago and have not only learnt Welsh to a near fluent level but have also become part of an amazing community of likeminded individuals, many of whom I'm proud to call friends.

Say Something in Welsh is simple in its execution but extraordinarily effective in practice. Quite simply, there is no better way to learn Welsh.

Saying things in Welsh

I started at the outset of lockdown as a project to keep me occupied. It did that. The methodology aims to get you speaking; to give you the confidence to have a go and continue having a go despite errors and unknown words. Their way of learning may not be for everybody as it is so different from the traditional way but for me it succeeded so well and as time progresses I find myself understanding more when listening to Welsh and being able to express myself better speaking.
I have started texting friends in my 'street' Welsh and they seem to understand. Their replies, in a more literary Welsh, also help my development.
The online support is great with regular emails providing information on events and an online forum explaining issues raised by participants. It all makes you feel part of a supportive community.
It was recommended to me by first language Welsh speaking friends and because of my experience I can't recommend it too highly.

What can I say...

What can I say! I have belonged to the SaySomethingin community for at least 10 years. During that time I have not only learnt to speak Welsh, but have made life-long friendships and had an enormous amount of fun along the way. If your idea of language learning is being sat in a classroom or reading books.... forget it! SaySomethingin's method is fast moving, dynamic and fun. There is no way I would have managed more than half a term in a classroom. I think the biggest 'shout out' I can give for this method of learning is that with only about 50 words up my sleeve I was able to go into Wales and have a go! Even better, I was able to laugh at my mistakes and more importantly learn from them. Go for it, you will not regret it!!!

Learning a language is much faster than you think

The Say Something In method of language learning works very well, especially if you can stop yourself being a perfectionist! The idea is to be conversational in the language, not to have flawless grammar, so if you can let go and be willing to make some mistakes then it might surprise you how much information your brain soaks up.

There's a bit of a hump to get over initially because we're not accustomed to learning like this, but it's worth sticking with it.

The staff are friendly, approachable and helpful as well, and the online forum is a useful place to pick the brains of your fellow learners.

My only real criticism is that I personally find my listening comprehension doesn't keep up with my ability to speak. SSI do provide listening exercises, but they never worked very well for me, so I can say a lot more than I can understand hearing. I'm not sure how that could be improved though, in a pre-recorded course.

Overall it's very good, and within two months of starting I had native speakers of the language being absolutely astonished at the things I could say!

Highly recommended

I found SaySomethingin.com's course extremely helpful in my quest to become a Welsh speaker. I followed the online lessons and attended a week-long course with one of their tutors. At every stage, I encountered brilliant linguists who were extremely supportive of their learners. These courses enabled me to make the key transition from knowing a few words in Welsh to being able to form sentences and participate fully in Welsh-language situations. This has without doubt enriched my life and helped me to discover a whole new world within the country I grew up in. Diolch yn fawr iawn, SaySomethingin.com!
