Ikea/Sheridan worktop fitters: shoddy workmanship & appointments missed with no explanation or apology

Our issue is with Sheridan -- or rather, by "Barry" and his team, who template and fit the worktops produced for Ikea by Sheridan in Northern Ireland. Whether Barry is employed by Sheridan or is an independent subcontractor is unclear. That, and the murky relationship between Ikea and Sheridan, complicate efforts to raise complaints.

Our initial complaint concerned Barry's team, who dripped (black) sealant on our (white) cabinet doors and drawers; ran out of black sealant before setting the (underlaid, stainless steel) sink and so switched to white sealant (as opposed to black or clear, either of which would have been invisible), which they applied so sloppily great gobs of it could be seen from a distance as well as when standing at the sink. They also managed to chip the worktop and failed to seal one of the joins.

Barry came back (eventually) to correct these snags but it took two visits because he did not have the necessary tools the first time. Not long after his second visit, the seal popped out of an unrelated join. Again I contacted Ikea, who contacted Sheridan, who contacted Barry, who arranged another callout but didn't appear. I waited all day in the hope he would show up eventually. He didn't. The visit was rearranged. This time he came not with the original type of sealant but with some kind of paste that he mixed up on site. As this was visibly different in colour and texture from the original, the effect was unsightly. More importantly, this new seal popped out again within a fortnight. Again I emailed Ikea, who contacted Sheridan, who called Barry, who arranged to come out 17 Aug between 8 and 11 AM. He didn't, and has been unresponsive ever since.

Since then Ikea has apologised several times and has assured me they're pursuing the matter with Sheridan. It is now four weeks since Barry failed to appear as scheduled to repair the unsuccessful repair he made months ago and the join remains unsealed. I have considered fixing it myself, but I've been unable to clarify what if any implications doing so would have for the various warranties that accompany Ikea kitchens.

In its role as an Ikea subcontractor (if that is indeed the relationship between the two), Sheridan has been the subject of many complaints on various platforms (e.g.Trust Pilot, Mum's Net) besides this one. I have sent links to these threads to Ikea, who cannot be unaware of them and yet continues to work with this company across the UK. What irks me most is Barry's failure to let us know (twice) that he would not be coming, and the lack of an explanation, apology or offer of resolution directly from him or Sheridan ever since.

We are all under pressure these days, I understand that, and my impression from speaking to Barry is that he and his team are overstretched, but it is discourteous and unprofessional to blow off an appointment without explanation. I work from home, so I did not need to take time off work -- but it does take time to pursue a complaint which began most recently in early May.

The template was not done on the scheduled date and they turned up hours late on the day of the installation. The job looks good but it took a lot of organising as they did not stick to the scheduled dates and times

Quartz Work Surfaces

Fitters were polite and helpful.
We were kept informed as to when the fitters were due, including a phone call an hour before they came on site.
The quartz work surfaces fit perfectly and look stunning.

Shambolic communication and internal processes

I don't know how this company is still in business. We have been waiting months for them to finish our small kitchen worktop.
Visit 1: Initial installation – they were missing a piece so couldn't finish the job, we also noted with them a large chip in the worktop.
Visit 2: They brought the wrong size piece and said they didn't know about the chip in the worktop (they noted down issues again in a detailed report).
Visit 3: After being rearranged a number of times they just didn't show up (no communication)
Visit 4: After being rearranged a number of times they just didn't show up (no communication)
Visit 5: They said they didn't know about the missing piece or about the chip in the worktop (they took another detailed report, same as on visit 2).

Note that on visit 4 and 5 we've been without water in the kitchen for the whole day because apparently the sink needs to be disconnected each time.

Very disappointing

Very disappointing! Sub-contractors arrived without the detailed plan (what was the point of such a detailed survey?) and half the order! Which they then fitted incorrectly. 3 visits to get it right. Very poor service from Sheridans made more difficult because you are not allowed to speak to them direct. Do not reccomend this company would never use them again!

Would never use Wickes again.

Wickes gave shocking service, missed appointments, bad templating done after arriving 5 hours late, 1 worktop and breakfast bar wrong and no holes cut for sockets. No room for our water softener.
Four months with no sink, cooker and tradesmen not showing.
Took from ripping out kitchen in July to a December finish.
Would never use this company.

Made the cut-out for the hob too big

Made the cut-out for the hob too big, which was only discovered by our fitter two days later. This means the hob is not water tight and a potential health and safety issue, due to the fact over-spilled pans etc. could cause liquid to reach electronics. As far as we're aware, through contacts at Wickes, Sheridan are refusing to find a fix for the issue.

Professionally done.

Had a very expensive counter installed. Staff were punctual and polite. Measuring and installation all went smoothly and the countertop looks fab.

I don’t know where to start

I don’t know where to start, I will keep this brief. We suffered 3 cancelled appointments from Sheridans, when they did finally arrive, both the window sill and splash back didn’t fit. We were left without a sink for 10 weeks because of the delays. When you ring it’s a premium rate phone number, and your then faced with a rude person asking “why are you ringing us go back to the company you ordered through”. The fitters were superb.

Deceiving company and shocking customer service

Deceiving company and shocking customer service. I have received a quote for the worktop which was initially £4300. Template was aborted two times because supposedly kitchen cabinets weren't levelled completely. I turned out that they were actually ok because spacers could have been used for installation of worktop but company deceived me and aborted template twice. For those 2 aborted templates I was charged £520 which were never mentioned, not on their website, invoice nor any of the emails. Their quote specifically stated that template and installation are part of the price, it didn't say how many templates so be aware that 1 attempt at a template which will likely be aborted will incur a charge of £260 for 3 minute visit to your property. Then when I have already paid the deposit and waited so long for the kitchen I couldn't cancel the worktop and decided to go ahead regardless of those deceiving charges. Be aware that DWS doesn't fabricate, template, nor install the worktops. It is all done by Sheridan Fabrications Limited through subcontractors. I had coved initially included in my quote but when template guy told me I can't have it I have asked them to take it out. They only removed £68 for coved even though coving is normally paid by the meter and has much higher price. Even fitters who were installing the worktop said coved is much higher in price and that I could have had it done as my walls are better than in most houses. I was so surprised how deceived I was and couldn't have coved that I really wanted but regardless paid no cheaper price. I was given dates for installation for 5 days in a row but they never turned up. I was taking annual leave and rescheduling plumber and electrician every day for them never to turn up. I have been back and forth on the phone with them (charged £50 on my phone bill) and sending hundreds of emails but all useless as worktop never arrived. After 10 days I finally saw the worktop and it was installed. Unfortunately part of the worktop flexes and kitchen sink is not as advertised as drainage hole is not in the middle as on their website but at the far end of the sink (it made installation of my waste disposal very difficult and almost couldn't fit). Find local companies not a company that hasn't got transparent prices, is deceiving it's customers and has appalling customer service.

Worktops cut wrongly, follow up appalling.

Worktops cut wrongly. And their followup was disgraceful. Staff had passive aggressive attitude, blaming everyone else. Damaged the units. disrespectful. Didn't know what they were doing. Still no resolution. Company was taken over. No wonder!
