Excellent Service and Great Cars Every Time

Friendly staff, cars that feel almost brand new, and they accept debit cards with no mileage restrictions. They also offer full insurance with zero excess, which makes the rental process stress-free.
Everything is simple, transparent, and easy to understand. If the car you booked isn't available, they upgrade you to a higher-class vehicle at no extra cost.
I've rented a car from them three times already and have been very satisfied every time

Poor experience but FANTASTIC customer service

We rented a car for 4 days out of Vienna. It was not a great start and we had issues, however I have never had such proactive, great customer service hence my review.

The directions to the car hire place we received weren't correct which was little frustrating, and then when we finally found the office the Sixt individual wouldn't give us our car as he said it was too small and it was illegal in Austria to have bags on the backseat that weren't tied down. We spoke for a while but he wouldn't be moved and so we had to pay 50% more than the original rental to get the car.

On receiving an online survey about our experience I told them of our issue. Within 2 days they had written to us by email, apologise for what had happened and cancelled the extra charges - all unprompted.

I have NEVER had assistance like this from a car hire company who are notoriously awful to deal with, and from looking into Sixt I can see they are still a family owned business. Their customer service was excellent, and whilst they shouldn't have done what they did, I give them kudos for dealing with the matter in a great manner. Would use them again purely because of this.

Lied no same or lower, force upgrade with €700+

It’s a trap, Scammed, dishonored.
Lied about no car, force us to spend extra 700 euros for a downgrade.
Definitely the worst rental experience.

When pickup the car, agent lied about no car available, forced us to spend EXTRA 700~1100 euros to “upgrade” from E class, to a C class.

He lied that there are absolutely NO equal or Lower tier available. And said it will be more expensive if we book a new one.
(see screenshots)

This happened after we filled every form for 10 minutes, right before they give me key!
Totally waste of time for dirty scam.

This horrible experience totally break my expectations of sixt, as a loyal customer for 8 years.

For the site manager and sixt corp.
If your corporate image is to be trustable and reliable, your employees definitely doing the opposite.

We got scammed and still waiting for a response from Sixt.

I booked the car throught Auro Europe US website (automatic Citroen pick up at the airport Vienna), and they did not have that car, but Opal which we had a prior bad experience. We opted for a 20 dollar upgrade charge fro Peugeot and we were scammed! My husband was specific and said our reservation was in US dollars, and we are just paying for the upgrade only and crossing the boarder charge. Sixt employee at Vienna airport mentioned security deposit charge at check out. He charged us double the price of what we paid and in EUROS! We returned the car in pristine condition. Our original cost for 7 days (we had the car for 6 days and 3 hours) was $425 including all taxes, and our final bill was Euro 708.24 which is close to USD 840. I went to the website to check and the same car that was ended up renting and was a lot cheaper than what they billed us. I have screen shots. We called Sixt, and got some call center in Asia. The woman was rude, shouting and repeated the same script over and over, telling us we were wrong and we need to pay in Euros. My husband is an attorney and couldn't get her to stop talking to listen to his issue. We notified Auto Europe and they are still waiting for the Sixt to get back to them. It is a week later and no one has returned the email. Returning the car in VIenna at the train station was another nightmare! We couldn't find the entrance for the drop off, google maps made us drive in circle around one portion of the train station. We were about to drive to the airport but I got out to look for the Sixt rental office inside the train station, running from level 1 (office was closed) to lower level (where the office was also closed). No one said it would be a holiday and the offices were closed. I couldn't reach a person, customer service or anyone. Finally inside the garage, I found other customers who had same trouble finding the place and drop off box! There was one box at the wall for pick up car keys, but the drop off box was else where, hidden in random location with no sign of any kind. It would make sense to haver both boxes next to each other by the wall when one enters.... Other people were looking for it also. We lost an hour plus. A terrible process and the whole experience of renting a car in Vienna from beginning until the end. A total nightmare. Shame on Sixt's airport employee who practically ripped us off while smiling.

Stay away from this company

Stay away from this company! They have been holding my deposit since March. They claim they released it, but it's not visible in the banking system. When I asked for the official ARN (Acquirer Reference Number) code, they said they would request it from their payment provider. It has been EXACTLY ONE MONTH and they are completely ignoring my emails. I had to initiate a formal chargeback process through my bank to get my money back. Zero communication, zero customer service. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Never use Sixt Rent a Car

I have rented a car from Salzburg for a day with this firm. A few weeks later they sent me an email with a screen shot of a pdf file concerning a traffic fine of 30 euros for speeding at 39 km/h
In addition to this so called fine they also charged me with a service fee of 35 euros. Which, I believe has no legal basis in EU. And is insanely high comparing the service they had to do to send me that email!

The firm does not reply to my emails and my asking the original paper work for the fine.
This rental car business is one of the ones that you should stay away from. They feel corrupted.

Horrible booking experience

Horrible booking experience. AI without "I" everywhere, when finally transferred to a human, they sit somewhere far far away from any of the actual rental locations (not even in the same country) and don't know anything, neither can they help. Website was down for 2 days too. I don't understand where do those high reviews are coming from...

Damage scam

The experience at innsbruck airport was actually really smooth.

The problem is they then charged me €263 for a tiny scratch that I’m very sure did not happen during my rental. Feels like a tried and tested scam. I definitely feel scammed. Beware.

Very disappointing experience with Sixt…

Very disappointing experience with Sixt at Vienna Airport.

Timeline of events:
• 14 Mar 2026, ~9:40 AM (Pickup at Vienna Airport

At the counter, I was informed by the staff that the vehicle (Mini Cooper) I booked was unavailable and I will be provided a “free upgrade.” Based on this, I agreed and signed the rental agreement.

• During signing
There was no clear explanation that the upgrade was chargeable. Given the fast-paced airport environment, coupled by my long 12.5 hrs flight and 2 toddlers in tow, I relied on the staff’s verbal assurance.

• After reviewing the contract after I return the car
I discovered a charge of EUR 674.80 for “Choice Upgrade” — a significant cost that was never disclosed or explained upfront.

Key issue: This is not a minor misunderstanding. Being told something is free when it is actually charged — especially at this amount — is highly misleading.

The charge was:
Not clearly explained
Not presented as optional
Not transparently communicated before signing

Why this matters: Customers should be able to trust what is told at the counter. This experience raises serious concerns about transparency and sales practices.

Current status: I have formally disputed this charge and escalated the matter to consumer protection channels.

Advice to others: Be extremely careful when renting here.
Do not rely on verbal assurances — check every line item before signing.

I hope Sixt reviews this case seriously and improves transparency for future customers.

Fantastic pick up

Fantastic pick up, the staff member who dealt with us was amazing. Ten minutes in and out. Relaxing interaction, and an upgrade. Fantastic quality car and the whole transaction. Thank you.

Very disappointing

Very disappointing, non-transparent pricing and misinformation

I recently rented a car from Sixt and had a very disappointing experience with their pricing and customer service.

At the time of booking, I chose a rate clearly shown as around 80 EUR per day. When I picked up the car, the staff member at the counter briefly went through the paperwork, but did not clearly explain that the actual daily rate would be significantly higher. On the contract, the “Miettage” amount and additional fees resulted in a total far beyond what I had been led to expect.

I was also explicitly told that the fee for driving abroad would be a one‑time charge of about 45 EUR. Instead, I later discovered a different amount and structure on the contract, which did not match what was communicated during booking.

Finally, the agent offered me an “upgrade” at the counter and presented it as if it were free of charge. I never requested a paid upgrade. Only after reviewing the contract in detail did I find a separate “upgrade” charge added to the bill.

All of this leaves a strong impression of non‑transparent pricing and misleading communication at the counter. For a company of this size, I expect clear, honest explanations of all costs before signing anything, not unpleasant surprises afterwards.

Based on this experience, I cannot recommend Sixt. I would advise anyone renting here to double‑check every line of the contract carefully before accepting the car and to insist on written confirmation of all prices and fees that are promised verbally.

Considerate

Both picking up and returning the car went very smoothly. The staff at pick-up was especially considerate—since we weren't sure if all our luggage would fit, they let us test it out first before we finalized the vehicle. It was also incredibly convenient that we could adjust the return time and location via the SIXT app on the day of return!

Third time renting from Sixt, highly recommend!

This is the third time I’m renting from Sixt and it’s always been great!
This time I rented a car for a day trip to Hallstatt with my wife. The vehicle that I booked wasn’t ready for pick up, so the worker (Named Patrick) offered a free of charge upgrade from a compact SUV to a Luxury class large SUV to cover the inconvenience. This was extremely thoughtful and generous, it also provided a lot more comfort for the trip. That being said, I haven’t had any issues with booking, pick up, the vehicle driving experience, and the vehicle return.
I’m very satisfied with Sixt and will always come back whenever a good vehicle is needed! Thank you to the team of Sixt and Patrick!

You are at risk of being defrauded with SIXT

HOW DOES A COMPANY WITH 42% ONE STAR AND 54% 5 STAR HAVE A SCORE OF 4.0/5??? THE ONE STAR REVIEWS SAY IT ALL.

I previously had an experience at Geneva airport where they tried to blame a scratch on the alloy wheel on me. Firtinately I had a photo of the wheels and could show there was no damage. Thought his was a one-off from them. Just rented a vehicle from Innsbruck airport. When we collected it there were a number scratches and dents on the vehocle. I returned to the office indicating this and that they needed to revew with me - they said they didn't need to and had records of everything. First mistake I trusted him! On return we dropped the car out of hours and the following day I got an emailindicating that all the damage that was there before left the airport was my fault and they were going to charge for it. Fortunately I took photos of everything before we left and then when we dropped the vehicle off. I have been told that all was now OK and that I would be charged anything. If I'd not taken pictures I would have been taken to the cleaners by them - they were simply trying to take my money. How many people do they do this to? This is shocking.

Booked a car for a week from Innsbruck Airport. All went smoothly apart from an almost empty screenwash container. Bought a 20 Euro fill up - however Sixt were very apologetic and refunded this plus a goodwill payment (although I had to chase this up). Staff very polite and efficient and no wait. So much better then the supposed "cheap" providers.

We always rent vehicles from Sixt…

We always rent vehicles from Sixt around the world. Sixt is reliable. The staff are always friendly and helpful. We also get free upgrades from time to time. I always rent from Sixt for private use too. So far, I've only had good experiences.
Except at Philadelphia Airport (Status 2023 - Perhaps something has already changed here). Here, the vehicle base is not directly at the airport and you have to take the shuttle. However, the shuttle is not yet available for flights at 6:00 AM if you return the car very early. You have to find your own way to the gate. We ended up taking an Uber. That's why I'll be using the competition in Philadelphia in the future, which is within walking distance of the gate.
