I Hate Sparx Maths- an essay
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you of one thing: I hate Sparx Maths. As hyperbolic and over dramatic as this may sound, this is the truth. I believe that we as a society should return to the straightforward and effective way of doing homework: on paper, with helpful resources and the opportunity to confer with each other on the topics we have learnt in the classroom. Whilst I am by no means a maths enthusiast, I do not despise the subject, and even I can see that this website is a monstrosity that is ineffective and frustrating. Allow me to elaborate.
First of all, the entire 'learning strategy' is irritating, unhelpful and patronising. It is to my knowledge the questions are supposed to get easier or harder depending on your previous answers. However, this does not work in the user's favour, as once the questions get to a level which is challenging enough, yet still understood by the user, they do not stay at that level for more than a question or two. Instead, the questions get increasingly more difficult, far past the user's own knowledge, which can be incredibly frustrating and demotivating for the student who is simply trying to complete their homework in time.
Furthermore, ‘bookwork code’ is a simple yet torturous mechanism that seems to haunt my nightmares increasingly often. To the credit of the creators, this part of the learning is actually explained when the students first begin, yet somehow manages to overcomplicate and prolong the task (which ends up taking much longer than the estimated 40 minutes regardless of these ‘checks’).
Whilst it does encourage the student to write down their workings, it can be rather annoying to periodically stop what you are doing; flick back through a notebook full of scribbled notes and the ramblings of a young person whose sanity is quickly escaping them; and find the answer you typed in two hours ago (when you were still young and carefree and happy and had far fewer grey hairs); and finally enter it into the bookwork check which turns out to be incorrect anyway as your handwriting is often atrocious during the holidays.
Secondly, Sparx Maths is supposed to be a learning aid: a tool that is accessible to students and accompanies what they are learning in school. However, not only is this site difficult to use for many students due to the phenomenally unhelpful layout of the questions (the box to submit an answer is, for some reason, not on the same page as the question), the lack of flexibility in answers is often disheartening when your number was just 0.1 away from the correct one. Also, the topics of the questions are often unrelated to the previous ones, which makes it even harder to recall knowledge from several different areas of maths within the same session.
Quite frankly, I have never seen a less engaging or interactive learning tool in my entire life. Ever.
Finally, it is clear that the menial task of creating a simple yet effective revision and learning aid is beyond the capabilities of Sparx Maths, and this dastardly website is dissuading young people from pursuing Mathematics as a career in the future. If they do not enjoy or feel motivated to study Maths, students will not progress as much and therefore feel less encouraged to explore the subject in more detail. As a result of this, fewer and fewer of the younger generation will be entering into Maths-based careers, including Maths teachers, who are essential to the future of education. One can only hope that the few survivors of Sparx Maths who go on to become teachers will see the errors of their ways and not subject their own students to the same torment. So, not only is this an ineffective and incredibly tedious way of learning and revising, it is damaging to young people, our economy, our curriculum and society as a whole.
As someone who frequently enjoys maths lessons and- dare I say- looks forward to them on the rare occasion, I have found this entire experience of using Sparx Maths to be astronomically unhelpful and I often find myself contemplating breaking my no-negatives-since-year-seven streak just to refuse to complete my homework on Sparx Maths and spare myself from the figurative (and perhaps literal) purgatory of this dreaded website.
I hope that I have made my view on this revision method extremely clear, and would genuinely prefer the atrocity that is a maths textbook to this website. It yis my wish that, in order to rescue other students from suffering the same fate that I have (that is, writing an entire three pages on why I hate Sparx Maths), we would be saved from this metaphorical hell and many of my peers agree that they would also learn more and feel more motivated to revise if it were on paper.
Regards
honest
i would be rating it a 0 star but I can't
personally I think its a load of rubbish
half of it i don't even learn in school bc my maths teacher is so thick she can't set the right maths
i want Hegarty back
i hate bookworm checks like i already answered the question right so why have I got to do it again
i would rather sit there answering questions on paper bc sparks makes me want to right angle x29 out of My window
what the hell
I have just sat and balled my eyes out over this app and I was hyperventilating and everything your stupid videos you make to “help” are so useless I actually want to throw my iPad so far out of my window it smashes into whoever made this apps head. Not kidding
SPARX MATHS SUPPORT VIDEOS ARE USELESS!!
This website is horrible and makes me and I’m sure my fellow students hate school and especially maths as if you get a question wrong you have no help from sparx at all apart from the stupid support video which shows a completely different god damn question and finally after i you’ve spent 10 minutes on one question you have like 30 more questions to do on completely random subjects each part. In summary if you are a school please I beg you use any other math website because all students hate it and there are soo many better options which help students learn better
I hate it with every fiber in my body…
I hate it with every fiber in my body and it is the worst app to do Maths on need to get rid of it for the rest of eternity otherwise I will have a mental breakdown bun this
i wrote a poem.
Oh, Sparx Maths, you cruel bane of my existence,
Your pixelated charts, my soul's resistance.
Your questions, oh so dry and cold,
My patience wearing, thin and old.
And then the dreaded "Did you try?"
As if my tears, they won't comply.
Another wrong, another mark,
My confidence, a sinking chart.
Oh, Sparx Maths, you soulless beast,
My love for numbers, has gone to the least.
Useless
Ugh, I can't believe I have to deal with this. Every other answer is wrong and then I'm hit with a new question. It's terrible. I already spent hours working out ten pages of solutions, only to find out that they were all incorrect. It's just one problem after another, and I'm at my wits' end.
PROS AND CONS OF SPARX
Pros:
Easy
Sometimes short
Often quick
Sometimes fun
Cons:
Hard questions
Can be very long
Lots of questions
OVERALL: 4/5
An apology to hegarty.
Dear hegarty maths,
Forgive me farther for I have sinned against you. Please forgive me for all the times I didn't do your homework. I swear on my heart that if you come back into my life I will be forever grateful and get A in all my maths test. Pleaseeee we all need you, farther.
Now with that out of the way here's what I'm really talking about:
1) who the actual.... Thought it was a good idea to make this.
2) once I enjoyed maths despite being bad at it.
3) sparx maths took that away.
4) your beep "HeLp vIdEoS" don't help. There not even relevant to the question like 99.9% of the time.
5) apparently some people get non optional times table game? Where's my 🦆ing times table game? Huhhhhhhhhh
6) thanks to sparx maths Everytime I ask for extra help with revision I get told to use sparx maths.
7) the frequency thing doesn't solve the problem
8) like 80% of people won't need maths when they grow up. (Like more then just use calculator). So at least make it fun.
9) stuff that is worthless to people should be FUN. Like tictok.
10) 🦆 you sparx maths.
An absolute disaster 😡
I used to use hegarty maths and trust me, I preferred it more than this. For some reason, they moved my homeworks to sparx and it's totally a disaster.
1. The bookwork checks are sometimes impossible to get right even if u watch the video sometimes.. And, its something really stupid to have because some people can just work it out mentally and dont need to write it down.
2. The videos are different subjected sometimes and only are a part of the topic which we cannot relate to..
3. The bit where it says have/haven't written an explanation is ridiculously idiotic to have because of course I have to put 'have written an explanation' to get that right..
4. The times tables games should be removed from compulsory homeworks and should be moved to independent learning or xp boost sections so that its not compulsory.
Overall, this is just a FLIPPING DISASTROUS maths homework site and I would be glad if any changes would happen or if this company will shut down.. ☹
THIS AINT SPARX MATHS
Pay attention to the "K" instead of the "X" on Sparx Maths. These owners of the website don't deserve this.
its not skibidi
its not skibidi and not sigma it smells like poo and poo
i hate sparx
i hate sparx. sparx makes me want to throw my ipad across the room. the support videos do absolutely nothing and it is completely useless
It’s ok
Well, it’s really clever and gives you questions based on your level. But there is stupid book work checks that makes you have to write every single damn question down. What if you broke your arm?!
NEVER using Sparx again is the worst…
NEVER using Sparx again is the worst thing in my life. why did they make Sparx
my honest answers for the review…
my honest answers for the review questions:
What went wrong?
- the fact there's bookwork checks.
- also the more bookwork checks you get wrong the more bookwork checks you'll have.
- the fact you can't skip a question and have to spend part of your now miserable life trying to get it right.
- AND SOME OF THE QUESTIONS ANSWERS AREN'T EVEN CORRECT.
How can this company improve?
oh. improvement? scratch that. just shut it down.
special note for mark:
i hate you
So unfair may as well be Sauron
They manage to word every question like it's a psychopath trying to catch you out on anything (probably quite accurate actually) and like to mark you down on their own mistakes. I am good at maths and am doing levels 5 years above me, so I get 1 hour of homework while my classmate gets 10 minutes. Mine usually has 8 sections and 10 subsections while his has 4 sections with 5 subsections. How is this fair? On my speed dial the icon is now Sauron's eye
