About Sub Zero Technology Ltd

Written by the company

During a cold and wet scramble along the Lake Districts Helvellyn mountain in 1967, Derek Laxton hit upon inspiration for a technical range of thermal underwear.

With a trained mechanical engineer background and a lust to run his own company, in 1969 Sub Zero Technology was created. From their original Leicester Textile Mill, the Sub Zero Factor 1 range of thermal base layers was born to worldwide acclaim.

In the five decades since, Sub Zero have expanded their range to include heavy weight thermal mid layers through to insulating down jackets. Never a company to stand still, Sub Zero have adopted new manufacturing processes, such as seamless knitting technology and body mapping, to produce garments that are at the pinnacle of performance.

Sub Zero today is still family owned, with the third generation of Laxtons running the company. The factory and offices now reside in rural Leicestershire, with the workforce coming from the local communities. Sub Zeros work ethos is still true today as it was form its interception - to design and manufacture technical outdoor clothing using the finest technical textiles for the words most extreme conditions.

I am very sorry about that. We are very quick at processing orders with around 99.6% being sent the same day. We obviously have no control over the delivery service provided by Royal Mail but they are usually efficient. We use their 2D barcode tracking system so if a parcel is taking longer than expected then it is always a good idea to call us and we can trace it. Usually just doing that on their system seems to get the parcels moving again.

Hello Mrs Eckart. Thank you for your review. We should have a new merino wool base layer range available towards Autumn in addition to the range you bought. We are just developing them at the moment.

Glad you like the merino base layers. We are currently working on an additional range for this coming winter (2017/18) with a new blend of wool and polyamide, based on the Factor 1 Plus technology. As soon as we have the details we will add them to the site.

Great gloves for cold weather conditions

Great gloves, purchased for himalayan trek. Kept hands warm in very cold temperatures. Only minus a star as gloves could have benefited from having a sturdier outer layer. With Velcro on my jacket, the gloves stuck easily pulling threads from the surface and bobbling very quickly.

That's the problem with Velcro, it shreds most fabrics, and is particular destructive in the washing machine, so beware. I'll pass your comments on to the manufacturers as they always like feedback.

Hello Mr Sabin. I have checked our email log and deane@subzero.co.uk sent the returns form to you on 13th January 2017 at 12.12pm. Sometimes messages with attachments get filtered out and placed in spam/junk folders, btinternet being particularly unforgiving. Did you check in your junk folder? If you still want to send them back to us then email me at sales@subzero.co.uk and i will resend the form to you.

I'm pleased you liked the quality of the sub-standard Factor 2 versions. Some people are wary of buying them as they are under the illusion that an arm or leg will be missing. A lot of the time it is a slight imperfection that the general public wouldn't even notice - we just have strict quality control processes that doesn't allow us to sell them as perfects.

That is the beauty of the Factor 2 thermal mid layer range, you can either wear it next to the skin on warmer days, or layer it over a technical base layer on colder days.

You did the right thing by layering our Factor 1 Plus base layers along with our heavier thermal Factor 2 range. We had another customer who went to a similar area in the antarctic on a cruise and sent us pictures of him outside in just his thermals - i'll try and dig it out and post it on our social media feeds.

Very warm and confortable

Very warm and confortable

I have had an excellent communication with SubZero. They helped to choose the right size and also exchange items that didn’t fit me, was a breeze.
The Meraklon underwear is warm and extremely confortable.
The Factor 2 Polar Heavyweight Thermal fits and feels more like a diver’s suit and is warm, very warm, very very warm!

I tested them on my motorbike in negative temperatures: The Factor 2 Polar Heavyweight Thermal with under a normal wool sweater and my leather jacket were more than enough. I didn’t feel the cold at all.

What was a nice surprise is that although they are composed by synthetic material they don’t stink!
I wore them for four days (just to test!) and they didn’t smell at all. Just like merino underwear.
All in all I am happy with my purchase, especially for the price: I bought the « Sub Standard » garments and in fact is very difficult to see the small defects if at all.

The only caveat, is quite that they are available only online, so is difficult to choose the right size. The size chart on subzero store site is very detailed and accurate but the risk is the same for all online shopping that we cannot try on clothing.
In fact, the Factor 2 long sleeve underwear I choose in XSmall is quite small for me but very stretchy, so I can say it’s Ok.

We realise that buying over the internet is always a problem when it comes to sizing. Having a stretchy garment as well complicates the matter. We are currently working on updating the size charts and introducing sizing videos for our customers. Hopefully these will be available in the next few months.
