A case of fraudulent checkout manipulation and invalid proof of shipment
I attempted to make an online purchase for approximately $25 using PayPal. After clicking “purchase,” a PayPal window appeared showing the transaction as declined, but the amount displayed was $5,074, which I did not authorize.
I immediately closed the window, believing the site to be fraudulent. Shortly afterward, I received multiple emails indicating the charge had been processed and that the item had “shipped.” The shipping confirmations include tracking numbers that predate the purchase by several weeks, indicating invalid or falsified shipment information.
I immediately:
Secured my PayPal account (password change)
Reported the transaction to PayPal as fraudulent
Contacted my bank as soon as the charge appeared
I did not authorize a charge of $5,074, did not receive any legitimate goods, and did not approve or consent to this amount. This appears to be a case of fraudulent checkout manipulation and invalid proof of shipment.
