Another great and well organized event…

Another great and well organized event at White Waltham last night. As usual everybody was very helpful and the evening ran very well and was very good value for money with some great subjects to photograph all with very well set up lighting. Well done all at Threshold.

“Night at the Tank Museum”

I attended the “Night at the Tank Museum” at Bovington in Dorset. The event was well run with not too many participants in these days of Covid. The Threshold staff were polite and extremely helpful to us new comers to night shoots. A meal was laid on with a choice of 3 or 4 main courses and a selection of veg. The toilets In the main building were also available throughout the evening. The only problem I had was focusing after dark. I already knew that the auto focus would struggle and as someone who normally wears glasses I do tend to rely on Auto function and I may not have the view finder set correctly. It was easier to focus on tanks which had lettering or numbers on to use as a focus point. But many tanks, being military are painted to blend in. I believe Threshold normally do Aircraft and tanks was a first for them So I don’t know if the same problem exists with planes, but I hope the next time something can be organised to aid focusing and I do hope there is a next time.

With my thanks

I have now attended numerous of the groups night shoots, and as an experienced night shoot photographer and photo-shoot attendee this guys nail it.
The access that they get it in my humble opinion second to none, and i speak as an ex HM Serviceman, which gives photographers what they crave, authenticity, and also the value for money is second to none.
I will continue to support thresholds shoots for these reasons, especially as i always go home with a smile on my face and a memory card full of stunning.images
keep up the great work guys

As previous events...great!

I`ve done several previous events, each time I improve on the last with experience and helpful tips and advice from the team. My son came to this event too, and thoroughly enjoy it, I`ll do more if the subject is of interest and date dependant.
Great events, great team, helpful and pleasant.

This was the first such event myself…

This was the first such event myself and my son have attended, and we were very impressed by the organisation and organisers. Not being a very experienced photographer I was struggling when the lights went off as I couldn’t get anything from my camera. I spoke to the events chap at the Comet for some help and he immediately contacted one of his colleagues who was more experienced, and he came over and took us through night shooting, which meant we managed to get some pretty decent photos from the evening, without his help we might as well have gone home. Would we buy a ticket again- damn right we would, thank you for a great evening

A Night at The Tank Museum

A Night at The Tank Museum was my first shoot with you. Well organised and pleasant folk to deal with. Covid stopped much in the way social contact during the shoot but pleased to say everyone was courteous and took care not to walk into other’s space. A good evening all round. I’ve now booked for Yeovilton!

Threshold Aero Tank Shoot Bovington 17 Sept 2020

As a former Tank Commander I thought this would kindle some great memories and it did I guess....just!

JOINING EVENT

It popped up on Social Media and booking etc was easy. All administration in terms of joining instructions were clear and easily understood although there was a reference to ‘the planes’ instead of tanks.

On arrival everything was well organised and pre shoot briefings were fine. In all honestly it was very simple, though clearly too much for some. More about that later.

The meal supplied by the Tank Museum was fine and appreciated.

PHOTO SHOOT

For me the whole thing was a huge disappointment for a number of reasons. I felt that the area of the arena offered very little photographic opportunity by Day, which was the majority of the experience. The backdrops were poor, security fencing, the museum and the concrete bollard/wall around the arena.
There were too many unrealistic backdrops. Having looked at Threshold Aero Flickr pages you can clearly get away with a Fast Jet upfront of an Aircraft Hangar, it’s not unrealistic. With tanks, a concrete bollard, a Military Vehicle Conservation area or a security fence is not realistic. By placing the vehicles in a circular fashion it was difficult by day to get a clear shot of a tank without another in the background. The siting of the Chieftain was poor alongside a pretty dire T55 and a old Centurion ARV, the Challenger 1 poorly sited tight against a concrete wall.
I think that the tank setting is different from Aircraft and I am not fully 100% sure it was thought through.

The Sherman was fantastic but again the tank Museum does not provide a suitable backdrop nor did a Leopard 1 on high ground look a realistic backdrop to the Fury!

I felt that the tank museum offers very little in this aspect. At night the LED lighting from each tank stand afforded very little help whilst trying to frame another shot at a different tank stand. Flags fluttering on antenna also impossible to deal with at night with longer exposures.

In addition, the tank museum staff insisted moving a Saladin Armoured Car about in front of the Military Vehicle Conservation building which caused problems with exposure. The museum lights were not switched off so this caused all sort of problems initially with the Sherman and the Mark 1V. Well done for getting the Car Park lights switched off, I think by doing that Threshold just got away with it for most.

I cannot be bothered to spend hours cloning lights, flagpoles, people or the guy with the Emoji catsuit out of my pictures.

THE SELECTION OF TANKS

All pretty drab for me, Army Drab Green paint is not especially suited to photography so the Matilda, Comet and T59 were a waste of time.
I thought that the selection of tanks on offer were varied but sadly rather boring. It would have been nice to have something in Desert Camouflage as an example.

LACK OF UNDERSTANDING

I fully understand that everybody had different reasons for attending last night. The clown in the Emoji cat suit dancing infront of the Sherman and his mate who clearly failed to understand the briefings were a complete pain in the backside!

They continually got in the way, by day and night. I did ask the guy at the Chieftain tank to move him away but this was not especially successful as he walked right infant of the tank mid exposure and took a selfie!

So all in all, a good effort but sadly I think you may realise that the tank experience is different to aircraft. Stick to what you know is my advice. I certainly would not advise a photographer to attend the tank event in the future, leave it to tank spotters….and clowns in catsuits!

Hi "Consumer" and thank you for your honest and frank review.

We're sorry that you felt you couldn't leave your name, we're happy to receive reviews - good AND bad and to be able to respond and rectify them where possible.

We understand that the event may not have lived up to your expectations and as you noticed this was our first "non-aviation" event, at a new location for us.

We've taken your feedback on board, and alongside our post event debrief with our team and our hosts, the museum, we know what we need to do better next time.

We will, of course, share your concerns with the museum and next time, we will work to ensure better positioning for the vehicles.

If you'd like to discuss anything specific in more detail our inbox is always open; info@threshold.aero. We hope to see you at another Threshold.aero event in the future.

Bovington Tank Museum Night Photo Shoot.

As a photography enthusiast and with my cameras collecting dust, an advert popped up on my Facebook via Bovington Tank Museum, offering a photo opportunity for limited numbers or people. It was located outside in the open, full Covid precautions in place, with some of the best tanks that the museum could drive onto their outside track. So I bought a ticket just so I could snap a few shots and sharpen out my photography skills in low light.
The experience exceeded my expectations. All our names were pre-printed, Covid temperature checks in place, pre-photography safety briefing done, before a totally relaxed atmosphere of pottering around taking photos. The Threshold.Aero team were photography enthusiasts also and offered their help to anyone who was finding it difficult with their camera settings, as the lighting changed from daylight, to sunset, then to night time LED's.
I would easily buy another ticket to another event should my diary allow it.

I've had the privilege to volunteer with the team at Threshold since the Gazelle 50 Fly in at Middle Wallop. Andy & Paul both as enthusiasts themselves have a good understanding of their customers needs and over the years have delivered unique photographic opportunities time and time again. Personal highlights for me has to be the Navy Wings Nightshoot's with a vast array of naval aviation on show and under the fantastic lighting systems they have.

Fantastic events!

Fantastic events as they say run by enthusiasts, for enthusiast. Helpful and pleasant staff who happily are on hand to help regarding any issues. Can’t be easy to control a bunch of enthusiastic photographers, especially in the dark! Also they are willing to listen to any ideas regarding lighting and are willing to change things to taste. Highly recommend.

Cosford 14/3/20

Cosford 14/3/20. This was the first (and last) event I attended. I found it very disappointing. The lighting (what there was of it) was flat and uninspiring. This should have been a great opportunity to show off the TSR2 but it was wasted. Photography is moving on. The analogy is that nature photographs of a "bird on a stick" no longer cut it. There needs to be something different or special. Similarly, a plane on the tarmac needs some drama or some effort put in by the organizers to do something different. I suggest some of your staff go to a Time Line Events photoshoot and see how the professionals do it.

Hi Howard, many thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We pride ourselves on having an open approach to feedback allowing current and potential customers to see what others think.

We're very sorry that the experience you had wasn't what you had hoped. The aviation photography market is a crowded one, and we try to differentiate ourselves from other companies.

Since we launched in 2017 we have tried to cater for those photographers who want photographs of aircraft rather than staged, theatrical events. We have an image gallery on our website that shows what our events are like: https://www.threshold.aero/about-us/gallery

Again we're sorry that you didn't enjoy the event, and we hope that you are able to understand why our events are like they are.

If you'd like to discuss further we're happy to chat, please email us at info@threshold.aero.

Another illuminated success from Team Threshold

I believe that the Gatwick Nightshoot was my 9th event with Threshold (do I get a free coffee on my 10th?). As always the event was very professionally organised yet run in a relaxed and inclusive manner by the Threshold Team. As with all events there were challenges, soft ground in particular, and maybe that saw aircraft and photographers more grouped together than would have otherwise been the case? The light spill from nearby Gatwick created its own challenges to the photographer, but that's all part of the fun. I'm looking forward to my next event with Threshold, the Shackleton dusk shoot. In conclusion, I really enjoy the Threshold events and fully recommend others to give them a try. Onwards and upwards chaps.

Best in the business?

I can't do anything more than echo previous reviews......but.... You guys at Threshold have really taken these charters to another level (take note others especially another 'T'). The one at Gatwick was at times a bit of a struggle, mud etc well outside Thresh control of course but we did have to suffer the odd (literal) 'stick in the mud' who takes a memory card full of the same shot, same angle, each rivet etc. The 'rope' job at Yeovilton totally nullified that 'type' (I do wonder what sort of money I'd have made developing those guys 'films' back in the day). The real plus at Gatwick and I can't thank everyone enough (especailly Paul) from Threshold and the photographers who helped with advice and courtesy to my step great grandson Kayden (8) on his 'very special' invite. I reckon on his side he proved just how sensible kids can be if the interest is there. Dowside for me has been a 24 hour bug that's really knocked me but I will put some of Kaydens pics up in the week. Many are better than my 75 years (65 as a photer pro and hobby)!! Thanks again guys just keep doing it!!!!
