Unexpected shipping costs ruined the experience
My wife and I were excited to receive gifts purchased for us by friends and family, but unfortunately I cannot recommend The Wedding Shop based on our experience.
We live in the Republic of Ireland, as close as possible to the UK while still falling under international shipping. After the gifts had already been selected and packed, we were presented with a shipping quotation of £304.20 for items with a stated value of only £230.49. Even after applying the VAT credit offered, the remaining shipping cost was £265.79. This is £35 more than the value of the gifts themselves.
The online terms and conditions state that: "In these cases (International Shipping), there will be a delivery fee, as well as applicable import costs, to factor in." However, nowhere does it indicate that this delivery fee will amount to more than 115% of the value of the gifts themselves.
The most frustrating part was that the shipping cost was only communicated after the gifts had already been selected and prepared, leaving us in the position of either accepting an excessive charge or abandoning the generous gifts purchased for us by our friends and family.
A much clearer explanation of potential international shipping costs upfront would have prevented this situation and saved everyone time, money, and frustration.

We completely understand that the shipping quotation you received came as an unwelcome surprise, and we appreciate why this has been frustrating.
As a UK-based business, international deliveries are handled differently to UK mainland shipments. While we don't set international shipping costs ourselves, we work with specialist shipping partners who provide quotations based on a number of factors, including the size, weight and destination of the order, rather than simply the value of the goods. Unfortunately, with the current global shipping landscape, these charges can sometimes be significant.
We do make it clear within our Terms & Conditions and FAQs that international deliveries are subject to delivery charges and any applicable import costs. Importantly, there is never any obligation to proceed with the quotation we provide. Where international shipping is required, we're always happy to support couples by providing the information needed for them to obtain their own shipping quotations, or by arranging delivery to a UK address should they prefer to use their own shipping provider or an alternative delivery location.
Having reviewed your account, I can see that you're already in contact with our Customer Care team, who have explained the options available following your delivery request. They will continue working with you to find the most suitable solution and support you through the next steps.
We do appreciate your comments regarding the visibility of potential international shipping costs, and we'll ensure this feedback is shared internally as we continue to review how we communicate this information to our couples.

I wouldn't recommend this service
I wouldn't recommend this service. Whilst they have good products, the negatives are:
- The lead times are ridiculous, I think we waited more than 8 weeks after ordering our products and a lot were out of stock by the time you go to order.
- Sales/discounts like Black Friday deals aren't reflected in the pricing, so it isn't good value for money. I found the products much cheaper elsewhere.
- The handling fee for cash gifts.

As we work with a wide network of carefully selected brand partners, many gifts are ordered directly from our suppliers once couples choose to have them. This allows couples the flexibility to amend their list throughout their engagement, but it can also mean that lead times vary and, on occasion, products may become unavailable if suppliers discontinue them or experience stock shortages before an order is placed. We understand this can be disappointing and appreciate that it impacted your experience.
In terms of pricing, our gifts are listed at the recommended retail price provided by our suppliers. While we aren't able to match temporary promotional or sale prices offered by other retailers, including events such as Black Friday, we do aim to be transparent about how our service works so that couples can make informed decisions when creating and managing their gift list.
We also appreciate your comments regarding our cash gift handling fee, and we'll ensure your feedback is shared with the relevant teams as we continue to review our offering.
