Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 270 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Consumers frequently struggle with unhelpful customer service representatives and face major financial difficulties when trying to secure refunds after unexpected cancellations. Many people also reported deeply frustrating booking processes, lengthy delays, and recurrent issues with hosts failing to communicate properly or honor confirmed reservations. Some reviewers were happy with surprisingly helpful support agents and pleasant holiday stays hosted by genuinely welcoming property owners. Travelers occasionally found their accommodation experiences quite prompt and smooth when dealing directly with reliable and accommodating local hosts. Others noted that certain properties provided comfortable environments despite the broader organizational challenges encountered during their trips.

My friend and I stayed at Penlan Street…

My friend and I stayed at Penlan Street from the 13th July to 17th July 2026. The accommodation is a short walk (uphill) from the Train Station and the Bus station is just across the road from the train station in the centre of Pwllheli Town.

We arrived at the accommodation and found the lock safe, which opened no problem. The accommodation was clean, and had all the amenities needed for our stay. On entering we found a couple of flights of stairs, at the top of the first flight was the toilet, which was lockable, having a vacant or in use sign operated by locking the door from the inside. As you would expect, soap, toilet roll and clean hand towel were available. Hot water was dispensed by a geyser on the wall. There was a heated towel rail for keeping the towel dry. Other necessities, ie toilet brush and bin were available.

The bedrooms were clean and fresh. 3 bedrooms, 2 double beds and one with twin beds. The Twin room was situated at the top of the second flight of stairs while the two double rooms where situated at the top of the 3rd flight of stairs. Each bedroom had a fan, which we appreciated in the hot weather the UK has been experiencing. There was a heavy wooden chair in each room, table and lamp and clean towels on the bed. There was a place to hang clothes with coat hangers. This furniture was a low open shelf type in construction. The beds sported 2 or 4 pillows depending on if it was a double or single bed. The beds we used were comfortable, made up with quilts and sheets. The curtains were black out, which was good as the long summer days mean its late when it goes dark outside.

On the main floor, the door to the right took you to a seating area and kitchen. The galley kitchen was fully equipped for our stay, with appliances including, toaster, microwave, hob, oven, dishwasher and washing machine. All crockery, glasses, cutlery and all essentials you would expect to find in a kitchen. In the cupboard under the sink were tea towels and cleaning materials. The hot water was dispensed using a geyser. In one of the wall cupboards, we found, tea, coffee sugar, and basics ie salt, some of these may have been left by previous tenants. But after an 8-hour trip this was so welcoming. There were a number of bins for recycling different materials, which we hope we used correctly.

The seating area, had a wall mounted TV, 2-seater sofa and chair. Below the TV was a unit, with a number of pamphlets about ‘What to Do’ and what was available in the area. Very useful. As well as pamphlets of local eateries.

Going off from the kitchen is the shower room, which had a large easy to use shower, sink and hot towel rail. A small step into the shower is easily managed, but a slip mat would have been useful. My friend and I being in our 70’s would have preferred a small stool in there to sit on while showering, but this is only our preference and by no means detracts from the excellent facilities in the shower. As you went in, there was a ‘dry area’ carpeted where you could dry and dress yourself, also in this part there was an ironing board, iron and clothes horse.

Across the landing was the sitting room, with 2 sofa’s, coffee table, chair, large bean bag, lamp and bigger TV, under which had a unit. There was a game we could have played. It is a comfortable room, for relaxing after a day exploring the area and coming in from enjoying a meal in one of the local eateries.

Basically, our stay was very enjoyable. The accommodation was clean, had everything you would expect, and we would highly recommend staying there. Hazel the owner was accommodating, understanding and communication with her was excellent. Thank you, Hazel, for making our stay enjoyable.

Money grabbing and no holiday to show for it, no money either

I tried to book accommodation on Thursday morning only to not secure the accommodation but have 2 x payments of £290 go into my pending balance at my bank. Despite calling air bandb and finally getting through I was told the payments had both failed. However, they are still showing as pending today (Sunday) and I have no cash to cover my bills now or buy food for me and my daughter. So, this isn't just one payment to book, this is 2 full payments!! That really amounts to theft. As it's my bank account it's still pending in, I cannot actually spend money when the money is pending. This is the case with just about all banks, you have to wait, sometimes up to a week for the pending to clear and go back into your account. The following day someone else booked the accommodation so I've lost out all round. Appalling company. All call handlers only have English as a second language so it's incredibly difficult for me to understand them and vice versa. They haven't apologised, just said that the money will eventually return to my account. Don't book with air bandb, if you want decent service.

Found cockroaches in our apartment…

Found cockroaches in our apartment amongst other things such as bad smells inaccurate photos. Contacted Airbnb and they didn’t want anything to do with it. Left an HONEST review but it was removed as we were “extorting” the hosts because we asked for a partial refund. Therefore our 1 star review was removed and no partial refund given despite giving photo and video proof. Weak and spineless company who only look at for the hosts. If you have any issues, contact Airbnb straight away and take proof, not that it will help much anyway.

What a gem - The best Airbnb we have stayed in

What a gem. Absolutely spotless. Fresh painted and decorated. New bathroom with powerful shower over bath. New kitchen with all new facilities – fridge, freezer, cooker etc. Leading from kitchen, there is a glass covered utility room (washing machine etc) which you can sit in, which leads out on to a wooden deck area (where we had breakfast each day), which overlooks a wrap-round garden which is totally fenced in. Our dog spent a lot of time exploring and playing in the garden. The garden can offer sun or shade and has seating facilities and an outside dining table. Great for a glass of wine or to read in the evenings. High tech keyless entry and exit system.
Ceiling fans, blinds and curtains in both bedrooms, TV lounge and dining room (table and 6 chairs). TVs in lounge and both bedrooms. Loads of channels including Netflix.
Bungalow is located in a quiet, peaceful cul-de-sac with good walks locally and within 400 yds or so of a farm shop. Halesworth with excellent shops, pubs and dining options is about 1 mile away. Numerous very good restaurants with 5 miles. Queens Head at Bramfield particulary good and very dog friendly. Mrs Ts fish and chips at Southwold Hbr, Blackshore IP18 6TA best in the area but only serves till 3pm. Places to visit Norwich (2 cathedrals – the Catholic one is amazing), market etc 55mins away; the 15thC St Helens Church at Ramworth (often called The Cathedral of the Broads) offers panoramic views when you climb to the top of its tower via stone spiral staircase and ladders! – 65 mins. Seal viewing by Jet boat from Lowestoft; riding on the beach Pakefield riding school, Lowestoft. Southwold sea, pier, lighthouse and 5-minute ferry boat trip to Walberswick – all nearby. Sutton Hoo (45 mins), Rendlesham Forest (45 mins) and Constable country (75 mins) – all worth a visit.
Thank you Rebecca, (a first class host) for a wonderful stay in your beautiful property.

Scammers

Booked a stay, then the host stopped responding.

Contacted Airbnb and they said they wouldn’t do anything until 24 hours before our stay.

Have said if they don’t respond by then, they will investigate.

Have confirmed any refund.

Airbnb was once a decent company, now they’re a scam.

Disgusted with Airbnb

Disgusted with Airbnb. Two days of being stonewalled and I am at my wits' end.

I am a Superhost who has made Airbnb thousands of pounds. My listing (10 min Walk to Wembley Stadium - Private Ensuite) has a clear pricing discrepancy: my own host dashboard confirms the guest total as £250, with no cleaning fee and no extra guest fee attached. I have the screenshot to prove it. But when the same date is searched live on the platform, guests see a total of £309 for the exact same night. That is a £59 difference that has nothing to do with any fee I control.

I reported this with photographic evidence two days ago. Instead of investigating it properly, I have been passed from advisor to advisor, repeatedly asked to start again, and told by a "Senior Case Manager" that there is no technical issue because she personally checked and saw £250 on the map, directly contradicting the £309 I can see with my own eyes, right now, on a second device. I have asked for this to be escalated multiple times. Every single time, I am refused and sent straight back into the same chat queue.

Meanwhile guests are being shown an inflated price for my listing, bookings aren't coming in, and I am losing real income because of a fault Airbnb refuses to even acknowledge, let alone fix.

If you are a host relying on Airbnb to get pricing right and to actually help when something breaks, know that you will be stonewalled, contradicted, and ignored no matter how much evidence you provide.

Last week I wasted 5 hours on the phone because I couldn't get my calenders to sink. Same story. They are still not synched. No-one escalating or helping.I had to give up in the end.

I want someone at Airbnb who can actually fix this to contact me. Not another scripted chat reply.

I am considering my legal options. If there is anyone from airbnb reading this, please contact me.

Extremely bad company. Host has full power and BNB

Extremely bad company. Dont use at all. I have made bookings and paid by card and it is up to the host to approve and takes up to 24h . The first host declined after many hours , booked a second one and the same thing happened and same for ye third time !! 3 payments taken by Airbnb and I had no room . I spend the night in my car as home is miles away. Not only this , I have to keep track of all the transactions .
I started to use Ore approval and contacted host directly ( one of them was good ) and the second time , I had a pre approval from the host , however I completed the payment only to find they have declined . Power for Host only . AirBnB is only taking money No responsibility at all. Hosts can be moody and not of any type No professionalism . Customer is the loser and no support . Your money will be immediately deducted by this company and some ignorant moody or stupid host . Go with Hotels best

Extremely disappointed with Airbnb’s…

Extremely disappointed with Airbnb’s lack of transparency and process.

After being a loyal Airbnb guest for 9 years, I recently started hosting a room in my property. My listing had only positive feedback, with bookings made by friends who had a good experience staying at my place. There were no negative reviews, complaints, or guest issues.

Despite this, Airbnb removed my host account and also blocked my ability to use Airbnb as a guest. A paid booking I had made as a guest was cancelled, causing inconvenience and financial loss.

When I asked for an explanation, Airbnb provided only generic statements about possible reasons accounts may be closed, such as poor ratings, repeated suspensions, or Terms of Service breaches. However, they have not identified any specific breach, complaint, negative review, or evidence that applies to my account.

I am also unclear why my ability to book as a guest has been affected by a decision relating to hosting activity. Airbnb has not explained why this restriction is necessary or proportionate.

The biggest issue is the lack of transparency. If Airbnb decides to permanently remove a customer’s account, they should provide clear, specific reasons rather than generic policy explanations.

I am currently seeking further clarification through their complaints process and a GDPR data request.

Air BnB - Horrible for Hosts

If you are a host, and can possibly do without Air BnB, please do so! Their algorithms that they use to place and promote your property are unfair and only benefit Air BnB themselves. If you have a quiet time of no bookings, you'll find your listing going further down the list, while Air BnB will promote the accommodations who are booking more. And they get more bookings because they're further up the list - so it is self-serving. Also, they are impossible to contact, and charge exorbitant fees on the host. This makes the accommodation so much more expensive than what would usually be charged direct, just to make up for the fees that Air BnB charge. They are absolute bullies, and I would not recommend them to the hosts. It's a shame..... it makes it difficult for us little accommodations to make ends meet.

Feeling Unheard and Unprotected After an Unfair Decision

I’m sharing this to warn fellow hosts. A guest couldn’t get into the property because he didn’t know how to use the key box. I rushed over to help, but he cancelled before I arrived. Airbnb still deducted two nights from my payout, even though I wasn’t at fault and responded immediately.

This was financially and emotionally draining. It’s heartbreaking to realise that hosts can lose income even when they do everything right.

The case was marked as “final,” and I felt unheard and unsupported.Hosts deserve better protection. Please be aware that situations outside your control may still result in penalties.

Are Air bnb reviews staged?

We have booked numerous air bnb places in the UK over many years with very few issues.
However, our latest review stated some issues that could make the place a better experience for future renters.
Upon our return home, looking at the reviews for our cottage, every one was 5 stars. There were approx 40 reviews over 12 months and I think there is a fix whereby the owners can be selective in which reviews they want future renters to see.
It seems this needs to be addressed.
Based on the above observation we shall be halting Air bnb renting for the future until more transparency is introduced.

Awful both times I have booked it has filled me with dread.., have I got washing up liquid or have I got enough toilet paper, batteries for remotes to turn anything on not to mention where to put the rubbish out. The photos show this very nice place and then you realise that you have not access. Future note just book a hotel for cheaper and good service. What a waste of money

I will avoid booking with Airbnb in the…

I will avoid booking with Airbnb in the future. Hosts are just too unreliable and Airbnb seem to accommodate it. We debated whether to book a hotel or an Airbnb close to Edinburgh but decided on a reasonably priced Airbnb. After a number of weeks, the host messaged us privately to ask us to cancel to avoid the fees. We explained that we would be unable to do that as we would lose any rebooking assistance. He has not replied since. Just disappeared. He blamed Airbnb for allowing it to be booked. And no matter his personal situation, it was unfair to wait weeks and then put us in that position. Everywhere is double the price now and no assistance from Airbnb. We’ll just avoid in future as choosing Airbnb has cost us and there’s nothing to stop the host re-listing at a higher price. Although we will report it if we notice it, not sure it will make any difference.

Booked two nights in December for Bussleton, Australia. A pop up appeared asking if we’d like an extra night there. We accepted, reviewed the cost and paid.
Two nights later we got a message re “how was your checkin”
Air b&b had changed the dates to July!
Got some money back from the host but air b&b were useless.
