Alamo Bucharest Otopeni Airport

After 40+ car rentals in Bucharest and experience with around 15 different rental companies, Alamo is the only one I’ll use now.

Although on the surface they are more expensive than many local companies, in Bucharest that difference is worth it. Cheaper companies often recover the cost later through insurance pressure, cleaning fees, false damage claims, or stressful returns. With Alamo, everything is upfront and fair.

Location & convenience
Being based directly at the airport makes pickup and drop-off very easy. No shuttles, no off-site handovers, just a short walk across the road. This alone removes a lot of friction, especially on arrival or when catching a flight.

Check-in & staff
The check-in process is quick and organised. Staff are friendly, professional, and consistent. There’s no pressure to take extra insurance and no defensive attitude when asking questions. Communication is clear from start to finish.

Cars & condition
The cars are practically brand new, very low mileage, and in excellent condition. Clean inside and out, well maintained, and clearly looked after.

Insurance & approach to damage
What stands out most is how fair and relaxed the process is. Wear and tear is handled sensibly (for example, small marks under around 2cm). I even saw staff try to remove a mark with a wet wipe rather than instantly treating it as damage, which is rare in the Bucharest car rental market and very reassuring to see.

Extensions & flexibility
I’ve extended rentals with Alamo twice. Both times it was fast, easy, and reasonably priced, handled in minutes with no hassle.

Returns & charges
Returns are calm and straightforward. No surprise cleaning charges, no invented issues, and no intimidation. The inspection feels fair rather than confrontational.

Overall
After years of dealing with aggressive tactics and inconsistent standards elsewhere, Alamo stands out as professional, transparent, and trustworthy. If you want a smooth experience and don’t want to play games, this is the best option in Bucharest.

Alamo in Bilboa, Spain is dishonest

I rented an auto # RZ050253 from Alamo at the Bilboa, Spain airport June 29th 2025 to July 8. I had a flat tire on the 7th & called their customer service for help to repair it. They sent a tow truck that had no capability to repair a flat and then charged me 221 euros; 171e for towing & storage and 50e for admin fees. The tow truck did NOTHING to help our situation although the man said he thought it was a leaky valve stem. Our host at the Airbnb inspected the tire for leaks and pumped it up. Alamo illegally charged my credit card after I had frozen it by saying it was a recurring charge. I had purchased full coverage insurance at the time of rental. They were dishonest.

economybookings.com

I booked a car online through EconomyBookings and the payment was successfully charged to my card. At the rental desk (ALAMO, Barcelona Airport), the agent registered my passport and driving license, but when I went to the parking area, the car was not provided. No explanation was given.

When I asked about a refund, the ALAMO employee simply said it was “not their problem.” I contacted EconomyBookings support by email several times, but only received standard template replies with no real help. It’s been over four weeks, and I still haven’t received my money back.

Very poor communication and zero responsibility from both the aggregator and their partner. I strongly advise avoiding EconomyBookings — you risk losing your money without getting a car.

Easy, kind and reliable

Booked a car in Vegas and retuned it in LA. It was cheap, the pickup was easy, the car was good and the return was smooth aswell.
We even had a small rock hit the windshield and make a mark, but wasn’t charged even though we expected to be. So I feel like they don’t charge you without reason and is actually a stand up company.

Terrible

Terrible. I sent this email to the corporate but they ignored it:

Dear President of Alamo Rent A Car,

I am writing to formally escalate a matter involving a failure to deliver a promised reimbursement made by an Alamo manager following a documented service failure. This email serves as a formal request for resolution.

I reserved a Premium Crossover vehicle through Alamo (Confirmation #1589241299) for pickup on November 27, 2025, and return on November 30, 2025, at the Nashville International Airport location.

At pickup, the premium crossover assigned to me had a non-functional touchscreen, rendering key vehicle features unusable. When I attempted to select another available premium crossover, an Alamo employee denied me access to that vehicle and instead released it to other customers who arrived after me. Despite assurances, the employee was unable to repair the touchscreen.

I was then informed that no premium crossovers were available and that my only option was to accept a minivan, which was not equivalent to the vehicle class I reserved and paid for. I requested managerial assistance.

The on-site manager apologized and explicitly committed to reimbursing 50% of my rental cost as compensation. He provided his direct contact information and stated that a reimbursement check would be mailed to me. The manager’s phone number was (843) 450-6441.

Following the rental, I communicated with the manager via text message multiple times. In those messages, he repeatedly confirmed that the reimbursement check had been sent. Screenshots of these text communications are attached for your review.

To date, no reimbursement has been received. When I contacted the Alamo Nashville Airport office yesterday afternoon, I was informed that no reimbursement or check had been issued or recorded, and the agent told me that a manager would contact me at my phone number for further investigation. Subsequent attempts to contact the manager have gone unanswered.

This situation constitutes:

Failure to provide the reserved vehicle class, and
Failure to honor a documented and manager-approved reimbursement commitment.

I am requesting immediate resolution of this matter by issuing the promised reimbursement without further delay. If this issue cannot be resolved promptly, I am prepared to pursue further escalation through corporate consumer relations and formal dispute channels.

I trust that the executive review will result in a swift and appropriate resolution.

Thank you for your attention. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely

Very unsafe and disappointing experience

Very unsafe and disappointing experience

We booked an appointment to collect the car in the morning, but even with a confirmed time we had to wait over 40 minutes because they said the car was not yet available.

In the middle of winter, they gave us a car with summer tyres, which was extremely dangerous. We slipped on the road many times and genuinely feared for our safety.

Because of this, we contacted their Aberdeen branch, who were very kind, helpful, and professional, and arranged a car change. Unfortunately, this still wasted almost three hours due to a mistake that was not ours.

What made this even worse was the lack of care from the Glasgow branch. There was not even an apology from the person who answered my call, and they showed no concern for customer safety at all. They only offered a one-hour extension, which was completely unfair given the circumstances.

A stressful, unsafe, and frustrating experience. I would not recommend this company, especially in winter conditions.

On December 30

On December 30, we had reserved a car at Barcelona Airport and received all confirmations. However, upon arrival, the staff informed us that our reservation had been canceled. No explanation was provided for this situation – the employee only said, ‘I cannot help, the system did this.’ When requesting another car, we were told that there were no available vehicles at the moment and nothing could be done. As a result, we suffered both moral and financial damage, as we had to rent a car from another company at a significantly higher price

Alamo stealing money through third party vendors.

Alamo canceled my reservation and kept my prepaid money. Because it was booked through Expedia under a “no refund” policy, they claim they don’t owe me anything—despite the cancellation being their decision, not mine. Zero accountability. I’m out $300.

Charged Extra Fees/Taxes

I rented through Expedia and paid close to $1,000 for the rental including all taxes and fees. When I arrived in St. Thomas, the person said I needed to pay another $35 for taxes/fees. Then she asked for insurance, and I said the credit card I paid for had insurance, and she said the additional $35 (paid with a different card) would negate that so I needed additional insurance. This seems like a scam to get you to buy their insurance on top of anything else that you may have. Beware.

I was quoted 806.25 for a car rental in puerto Vallarta. I had paid for all the best insurances etc then upon pick up I was charged 1223.51 after getting the security deposit back. This was 417.26 more than I was quoted. I have called into customer service 9 times and they have escalated the matter but I never get a call back. I am just told this is all they can do. Worst service imaginable

Utterly disgraceful

Utterly disgraceful – Alamo stranded me and cost me 700 CHF
This was an outrageously bad and completely unacceptable experience with Alamo Zurich Airport.
I paid for a Tesla rental and was handed a car that could not be charged. Alamo failed to ensure that the most basic requirement of an electric vehicle ( the ability to recharge it ) was functional. This is not a minor inconvenience; it makes the vehicle completely unusable.
As a direct result of Alamo’s negligence, I was left stranded mid-journey with no viable way to continue. When I contacted customer service, the response was shockingly incompetent and dismissive. There was no real help, no urgency, no ownership of the problem, and no solution offered. I was essentially abandoned to deal with a crisis caused entirely by Alamo.
Because Alamo rented out a car that was not fit for purpose, I was forced to take a taxi at my own expense costing 700 Swiss francs. This cost was entirely avoidable and should never have occurred. It is unbelievable that a global rental company thinks this is an acceptable standard of service.
Renting out an electric car that cannot be charged is the equivalent of renting a petrol car with an empty tank and no way to refuel. It shows gross incompetence, poor preparation, and a total lack of care for customers.
Instead of a rental car, I got stress, delays, financial loss, and appalling customer service. This experience was not just bad, it was borderline negligent.
I would strongly advise anyone to avoid Alamo, especially for electric vehicles. If something goes wrong, be prepared to be stranded and left to pay the price yourself. This company completely failed in its duty of care, and I expect full compensation and a serious explanation for how this situation was allowed to happen.

Terrible, awful company.

Hired a car, it failed three days into the rental. Multiple calls to representatives later we were promised (a) to have an equivalent car delivered to a local depot - lie number one. Then we were (b) asked to drive to a farther depot to collect a car which had been “reserved”- lie number two. My husband is currently in a depot with our two year old having driven nearly two hours away to a place that could never help him. An absolute disgrace.

Unsafe experience with children + mischaracterization and bad-faith handling

We rented a vehicle from Alamo at Orlando International Airport (MCO) and experienced a situation that put our family — including two young children (ages 3 and 5) — at serious risk.
Two days into the rental, the rear tire deflated while driving. There was no accident or collision. Alamo roadside assistance replaced the tire with a temporary spare (donut), leaving us without a full-size spare.
From that point on, Alamo failed us completely.
Despite repeatedly explaining that we were traveling with small children, no tow, no safe transport, and no local vehicle replacement were offered. We were:
Denied a vehicle exchange
Denied a tire replacement even at our own expense
Forced to return the car only to Orlando Airport to get a replacement
This meant driving long distance from Port St. Lucie back to Orlando Airport on a temporary donut tire, with speed restrictions (around 50 mph) and mandatory stops every 30–40 minutes. Highways could not be used. What should have been a few hours became an 8-hour exhausting and unsafe trip, putting our children at risk.
As a result:
We lost our entire vacation weekend
Incurred additional food, fuel, and lodging expenses
Our daughter developed a medical condition related to prolonged sitting and stress, which continued even after we returned home
What followed was even worse.
Instead of accountability, Alamo later mischaracterized the facts, omitted key elements, and reframed the situation as “no incident occurred” simply because there was no collision.
The pattern is clear: instead of remediation, responses attempted to minimize, omit, and reframe documented facts.
This handling is not only disappointing — it is offensive to a family who trusted Enterprise/Alamo and who acted in good faith throughout the process.
Only after involving regulators did Alamo offer a refund — months later, and after repeatedly denying responsibility. At no point was there a meaningful acknowledgment of the risk imposed on a family with young children.
Thankfully, there was no collision. But it appears Alamo only recognizes responsibility after serious injury occurs, rather than when families are placed in danger.
We are sharing this so other families can make informed decisions before renting from Alamo.

unfair enrichment at Geneva Airport

I rented a car from Alamo at Geneva Airport between November 22nd and 26th. During my rental period, I did not hit or scrape the vehicle anywhere. I returned the car in the same condition as I received it.

After I had already returned to my country, I received an email claiming there was a small scratch on the left mirror, along with a charge of $470.99 applied directly to my credit card.

Alamo was unable to provide any timestamped or pre-rental photos proving that this damage did not exist before my rental. They rely solely on a check-out report that is signed before the customer is allowed to see or inspect the vehicle, which raises serious concerns about fairness and transparency.

Based on my experience and the large number of similar complaints I have since read, I strongly believe this company relies on charging customers for minor cosmetic damages rather than focusing on providing fair rental services.

Be very careful before renting from this company.

Alamo is as bad as they say.

If you rent from Alamo (Geneva airport), you deserve to;

- Be a victim of their incompetent and rude staff
- Receive a scabby Renault when you pay to rent a new BMW
- Be told by rude and inept Alamo staff that you should have rented from Hertz instead (it is good advice!)

The only way Alamo could have a poorer reputation is when Trustpilot will allow zero or minus ratings.

Take Alamo's advice and rent from Hertz instead.

REAL RIP OFF MERCHANTS

I would give them 0 stars of this was possib;e. I hires a car through their company Enterprise car hire from the London Gatwick Airport site.
The booking was done through another website.
At the time of hire, the rep tried a very hard sell for various other add ons. On returnig the car the rep refused to look at the car condition properly and I had to force him to look at the full fuel tank. He refusted to give any invoice or confirmation at the site. When I finally received the invoice, I discovered that had charged me for 'fuel pre purchase' of £57.66. This was despitre ahowin their employee the full fuel tank when I returned the car. I most definitely had not requested fuel pre purchase. It appears to be some tyuoe of an operation to extract maximum money out of poor customers even by such fradulent means. Please please do not use this company without checking every last detail at time of hire amnd return and ask for written confirmation of everything. They have wasted so much of my time and given me so much stress.

Unauthorized charge and lack of customer support

I had a negative experience with Alamo Rent A Car.

Even after verbally declining the Roadside Plus service at the counter, it was wrongfully added to my rental agreement, resulting in a charge of US$ 79.54. I was already using the Visitor Toll Pass, so the additional service was unnecessary.

I sent a formal email requesting a refund, including supporting documentation, and have received no response to date.

It is disappointing to spend time correcting an error that was not mine, especially with no follow-up from customer support. I expect this issue to be resolved with the appropriate refund.
