Many customers find the platform easy to use for searching ancestors, building family trees, and accessing extensive records. People appreciate the available DNA resources and tools, which help them discover relatives and learn new facts about their family history, often describing the process as engaging and enlightening. However, some customers noted concerns regarding the accuracy of 'hints' and user-generated trees, finding them unreliable or based on guesswork. I set up ancestry on the 28th of June with a 14 day trial.first payment has come out today..however the following morning I mentioned this to my daughter..she said would you like me to set it up on my iPad for you.me thinking ok a bigger screen, I've just cancelled it on the iPad now as I've payed twice in 14 days..believing it to be a one time set up..

Hi Belinda, we are very sorry you ended up paying twice! Your subscription works across all devices, so you don't need a separate one for your iPad. You can simply log in using your existing account details.
Because iPad subscriptions are managed by Apple, please request a refund from Apple here. If the duplicate charge was made directly on our website, reach out to our support team and we will gladly help get this sorted out!

Forget It

I thought that the DNA would indicate an “out of Africa” trail showing a path across Europe.
Instead I got a shaded image of southern Scotland and a bit of Ireland which anybody could have done from telephone directories
Very let down and a waste of money

We're sorry to hear that we didn't meet your expectations, Graeme. We understand how disappointing it is to feel like your results didn’t offer the deep, ancestral journey you were hoping for.

Because ethnicity estimates look at more recent historical generations (typically within the last several hundred years), they focus on where your ancestors left their strongest genetic signatures rather than tracing the ancient "out of Africa" migration paths across millennia. We recently held a webinar about AncestryDNA that you might find interesting. We've linked it below if you'd like to watch it.

I have received 3 emails from
ancestry about updating my credit card information. I
have updated it but keep getting the emails threatening to cancell my membership. I have replied but just get the standard 'we will get back to you' and they never do. Very dissapointed. It appears there is not way to complain to this company.

The most DNA matches, but no chromosome browser

Ancestry is the best genealogy site for building your family tree. It has the most databases and the most DNA matches. I also subscribe to ProTools which enables you to see how your matches are related to each other.
Ancestry has a 'cluster by match' feature which is quite helpful, but adding Autocluster would be even better.

What is desperately needed is a chromosome browser. This is essential for anyone who is seriously into genealogy to identify common ancestors using their DNA matches. All of Ancestry's competitors have a chromosome browser. I know Ancestry cite privacy concerns, but users can choose to keep their DNA results private. I would gladly pay extra for this feature. I'm sure millions of other customers would too.

Please please Ancestry add a chromosome browser or provide an interface to GedMatch or another third party chromosome browser.

Hi David, thank you so much for the 4-star review and for sharing your detailed feedback with us! We are thrilled to hear that you find Ancestry to be the best genealogy site for building your tree and that you're finding our ProTools and "cluster by match" features helpful for your research.
We completely understand how valuable a chromosome browser and advanced tools like Autocluster are for dedicated genealogists looking to map out shared DNA segments. While we currently prioritize other methods for exploring relationships to protect our database's privacy and security, we hear you loud and clear on how much this feature would mean to your research. Thank you for your suggestions on how to make Ancestry better!

Extremely poor information and service levels

Extremely poor information, service level and service speed. Actively preventing access to refunds etc with refund queries only and during working hours 9-9. It then takes hours to get anywhere. Even then it’s just blank refusals from untrained staff.
Also - notice there’s no times shown on their messages. Preventing anyone from proving their quoted 3-5 minute reply time is actually 20 minutes.

Caribbean records

Great resource for family history research with an easy-to-use platform and valuable record collections. My only suggestion is to expand the availability of Caribbean records, as many islands are still underrepresented. Adding more historical records from the Caribbean would make the service even more valuable for those tracing their ancestry in the region. Keep up the great work!

Hi Sally!

We regret any disappointment. We understand that it can take some time to get used to Ancestry, and we're eager to clarify our different subscription levels and help you get started!

We can first recommend our 'Getting Started Guides' linked below. As a first step, we recommend building your own family tree, beginning with what you know already and then working backward in time from there.
https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/Getting-Started-Lesson-1-Starting-Your-Tree

Secondly, for UK members we offer different subscription plans, which members can select from depending on which access they require. You can see an overview of what's included per plan through the link below. Our UK Essentials plan includes access to selected civil UK records, our UK Premium plan includes access to all UK and Irish records, and our World Deluxe plan includes access to all Ancestry records internationally. All of these plans also include access to public family trees.

I am generally satisfied with the ancestry experience, I enjoy the fact that the site enables simple tree building, and is an excellent resource for family history records. I also subscribe to Pro-tools which I have found useful, but my research is very negatively impacted by the fact that Ancestry does not provide a chromosome browser. I have downloaded my DNA results and uploaded to all the sites that provide this vital tool. However as most of my useful matches have not done this, my progress to resolve a couple of family mysteries is limited. Please reconsider providing a chromosome browser for experienced users. I would pay extra for this tool.
