Too expensive

No protection on purchase

I bought a van from a dealer on autotrader site thinking this was a safe option as Autotrader are a well known company.
The van i bought broke down within hours of buying, the dealer will not accept responsibility and when i asked Autotrader for help they also will not help in a useful way. Be aware they do not vet the dealers on their site other than to make sure they are able to pay their advertising fees as confirmed by them in a conversation when I tried to get help from them. I was deeply shocked because i have wrongly associated Autotrader with a level of protection that clearly doesn't exist.

It's unfortunate to hear that you've had this experience with a seller who's advertising on Autotrader.

I can confirm that we have automatic checks in place before any private or trade seller advertises with us, so if we've allowed them to advertise their vehicle, it means the information they provided has been checked and accepted.

We also conduct manual checks on accounts to ensure that the information we have is correct.

As previously communicated, we don't check the cars or their condition ourselves. We're only the advertising platform and aren't responsible for the adverts or their content, as that's the seller's responsibility.

Additionally, what was mentioned during previous discussions is that we use a third-party partner, Stripe, which is also our payment provider, to conduct our identity and verification checks, so we don't just check if they're able to pay their advertising fees, but we go to great lengths to make sure that their details are correct regarding who they are.

I can see that we've raised a complaint about this for you and have been in touch with the seller, so hopefully the issue will be resolved very soon.
