Never again with avis

We found a broken tyre after 1 day so we tried to call the assistence number avis gave us. well, most of them didn’t work, when finally someone answered, hearing i was speaking english, interropted the call and blocked my phone number. After that we found a french person tu contact them and they said they'd send someone to fix the tyre. after 2 hours a tow truck arrived to pick the car away leaving us by feet. of course he didn't speak english and i had to ask him in french (even if i don't speak french) how to get another car. so, we had to go by walk to the station where, the avis office worker told couldn't give us another car because we didn't know where the previous car was. of course we gave her the dossier number, but for her it wasn't enough. After 1 hour we finally had another car but the best is in the end, when we return the car and the woman who took the key started laugh on my face when I tell her the nightmare they got us through. Never again with avis

Absolutely atrocious

Absolutely atrocious. Please, do not use AVIS. Flat tyre outside Mont St-Michel. We are now into day 2 of being messed around. Sent to Granville. Closed till September. Now St Malo after hundreds of dollars in taxi fares. No communication. Each AVIS does not recognise the other. So new contract. So bad!!!!!

Do not use this company AVIS Paris airport…

Do not use this company until customer service improves. The rating speaks for itself. They charged me for collision damage which i was not responsible for and tried to defend but just completely ignored. A week later i used another company and found the service so much better.

Heart Attack

My partner hired a car from Avis Bordeaux Airport. A week before the end of the hire, he had a massive heart attack and has been in hospital ever since. I contacted Avis to ask for help to get the car back to them as my partner was so critically unwell, I didn’t want to risk being away for hours taking the car back. The day after hospitalisation, they suggested that I call their breakdown recovery company. They woman I spoke to told me that she thought I was LYING about my partner and that we didn’t want to take the car back to the airport. To cut a very long story short, I made 73 attempts to call Avis Bordeaux Airport on any number I could find. Most of the time the number rang out. When it was answered they said a ‘supervisor’ would call back and never did. I called the Avis.fr call centre. Pleasant but useless. Same with the UK call centre. Five days later, a friend said he could drive the car to the airport but it took another two days for Avis at Bordeaux to authorise him to drive it. I took to Twitter to see if Avis social media could help, but they were not only dishonest but completely unsympathetic. I found the entire situation appalling. I appreciate the circumstances were extremely rare, but to be called a liar and to have to waste precious moments when my partner is critically ill dealing with a simple matter of recovery was just so draining and incredibly upsetting. I will never use Avis again. Anywhere in the world. Their customer service was just awful. This situation should and could have been resolved so much easier. I can’t believe the stress they piled on top of an already devastating situation. Avis, you should be ashamed.

Don’t prepay!

Don’t prepay!
Booked a car from Nice Airport. They charge for services which - if for whatever reason don’t get delivered (in our case they didn’t accept the papers for second driver) - they still try to hang on to the overpayment. “It’s all in the T&Cs”, apparently.
Really slippery customer service - poor experience.

Avis insurance scam

I rented a car at Nice Airport from Avis. When asked if I wanted extra insurance, I declined as I always do. When the assistant pointed out that the excess was nearly 2000 euros, I still declined. She continued processing my booking. A few minutes later she said I have good news for you, I have a special price. I thought she meant that she was going to reduce the daily rate for the car. It was late and I was tired. When I returned the car 2 weeks later, I saw that the 'special price' was in fact for the insurance that I had pointedly declined. When I complained, I hit a brick wall. I had signed a contract that had the 'special price' in it, so that was that. I suspect that their employees get commission for selling extra insurance and find cute ways of adding it. Appalling company and appalling customer service.

No help from Avis in France

I was in the unfortunate situation of being hit by a stone from the side, crashing the large window to the left of the driver seat. I contacted seven AVIS employees for help and guidance, but never received any.

The incidence – July 21 approx. 16:10
In the rural area of Beaujolais we are hit by a stone from the side and the left driver window crashes. We stop the car and call the AVIS Breakdown service

AVIS contact #1 – July 21, 16:19, call to AVIS Breakdown Service

Following the AVIS instructions, we call the AVIS Breakdown Service for help and guidance. The employee refuses to guide and help us in regard what to do with the car but insists that we are contact the police to have the police inspect the damages and to make a report. The employee instructs us to contact 112.

We call 112 (on 16:24) and is passed on to the closest local police station in Cluny, France. The police refuses to drive to the place of the incident and to make a report given the damages (a broken window by a flying stone).

AVIS contact #2, July 21, 16:50 the AVIS Office in Macon, France

With the information that AVIS Breakdown Service will not help us without a police report, we decide to drive with the broken window to the nearest AVIS branch in Macon, France, assuming a face-to-face encounter would increase the likelihood of AVIS help. We arrive 16:50 which is 10 minutes before closure of the AVIS Office. The employee refuses to help us, since she has no cars available, does not know what to do with a car with a broken window and is just about to close the office. I ask the employee to help me contact another AVIS office to help me, but she insists that I should make the call myself.

AVIS contact #3, July 21, 16:55, AVIS Customer Service Center from the AVIS Office in Macon, France

Using the AVIS Macon Office phone, I call the AVIS Customer Service Center for assistance and guidance. I talk with an employee from the central call center. She refuses to help us and insists that that the local branch in Macon should help us. I manage to convince the local AVIS Office manager to talk with the central service center. They talk together over the phone and I’m instructed to leave the AVIS Office which is closing to await a call from AVIS France for guidance. We leave the office in the car with the broken window to our place of stay during our vacation.

AVIS contact #4, approx. 16:20 from the AVIS France Service center

When driving back to our place of stay in the rented car, an AVIS employee calls us to inform us that she refuses to help us, since we have rented the car through a broker (rentalcars.com) and that it is the responsibility of the broker to help us. I pledge her to help us getting the window fixed or to help us to a car replacement, but she refuses. I inform her that the car is fully insured and the fact that we have used a broker to select AVIS as our car provided should not exclude us from receiving services normally expected from a car rental provider such as AVIS. Nevertheless, she refuses to help and insists that I contact the broker.

Upon our return to our place of stay, I contact the broker. Rentalcars provides me with very specific contract guidance and informs me, that it is ‘the responsibility of AVIS as the owners of the car...to issue an immediate replacement, advise a course of action as far as repairs are concerned, or accept an early return of the vehicle.’

AVIS contact #5, July 21 17:59 call to AVIS Office Hamburg Airport (the place of rental)

Since I have now lost faith in AVIS helping me fixing the car or replacing the car, I decide to propose shorten my vacation and to drive the car to AVIS in Hamburg Airport. I call the AVIS office in Hamburg and explain the situation and my proposal, given the fact that AVIS will not help me. The employee cannot endorse that I drive the car to Hamburg with a broken window nor can he guide me to an alternative solution. He refused to help/make a decision but insists that I call AVIS Break down center again.

AVIS contact #6, July 21 18:06 call to AVIS Breakdown Center
I call the AVIS Breakdown center and explain the situation and lack of AVIS help and guidance. I explain and document my lack of success with the French police in obtaining a report. The employee refuses to help or to endorse my proposal of driving the car with a broken window to Hamburg. He informs me that he needs to speak with a supervisor and that I will receive a call very soon. I’m never called back.

AVIS contact #7, July 22 9:41 call to AVIS Breakdown Center
The employee is not able to fix nor replace the car, but for the first time in my interaction with AVIS, I’m in contact with an employee who can make a decision to endorse my proposal to drive the car to Hamburg with the risk associated (which showed to be a very cold experience).

In conclusion a very bad experience, which I will never expose my family to again

Poor IT systems at Avis Rental

I have booked a car online with Avis (France). Just when confirming the booking the site displayed that I have got a timeout so no message about booking confirmation or other. Screen displayed leaved me with no information. Without confirmation, I suspected that the transaction didn't take place so I tried again.
Later on I received two email saying that I booked a car with two different reservation numbers.
So I tried to call them but If you say that you want to modify you online booking they say to do it online only and then close the call without any other choice.
Very very poor customer experience.
Thanks to improve that

Untrustworthy & Bad customer service

We've booked a car, on a online platform, in south of France. When we received the car, it was full of scratches and bumps. The damage report has been filled out. Avis debited almost 400% on the booked amount. I am still waiting for answers on a Email demand, been sent weeks ago. There is no answer from AVIS! After a demand at the Online platform, i got a reply a few weeks later. AVIS Insisted, the car was in perfect condition when I collected and I have to pay the damage. I've sent a copy of the damage report as well evidence photos I took while the report was filled out. Finally I got money back. I wonder, whether AVIS have tried to cheat? One way or another, there is no answer arrived! By the way, the car was full of doghair and footprints on the inner side of the windshield. I believe, there was no desinfection of the car in Corona times!

Useless french car, usless customer service

I collected a pre-booked car on 27/08/2020 at Lyon St Expury airport.
It broke down (gearbox )200 KMs later that afternoon.
I called the assistance number 800 325 325. They collected the car and promised that a replacement car would be made available to me via the Clermond Ferrand AVIS office the following day. Despite dozens of phone calls no replacement car was ever provided. The assistance team were absolutley useless, they appeared to have no information whatsoever. The designated english speaking agent had very little English. On each call I had to recite the full story from the start. At one time I called the Clermond ferrand Avis office who had no knowledge of any arrangement to provide a repalcement car. As a result of their complete incompetence and lack of professionalism I have spent some €550 on taxis. As a further insult and evidence of their complete incompetence three days I recieved a call from the Avis office at LYS enquiring where was the car! They simply dont appear to have any idea as to what is happening and could care less. I eventually recieved a refund which did not compensate for the considerable inconvience of a ruined trip. I wont be using AVIS again. A local bucket shop could hardly be worse

Hired a car from Avis Johannesburg…

Hired a car from Avis Johannesburg South Africa. We had a small stone chip, which I realised we would have to pay for and thus arranged separate insurance before out trip. When I received the invoice Avis found underhanded ways of adding more than £100 of various charges, e-toll charges (despite the fact we paid for every toll in cash) Admin handling charge (no explanation provided). Finally the voucher (amount originally paid) did not even equal the amount originally paid to them. If you deal with Avis expect to get treated dishonestly
by a company that has lost its scruples and seeks to extract as money as possible from you using the very edges of legality. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! My first and last experience with this greedy and dishonest company.

Beware Avis scam

I rented a car through Holiday Autos from Avis in Nice, France. Avis offered me an upgrade at a “special price”, which I accepted. When I returned the car, they said my receipt would be emailed to me. They never did. When I finally got the bill the upgrade charge was four times what I had agreed to. I complained to HolidayAutos, as well as Avis, but neither was willing to correct the error. I then got American Express involved, and Avis told Amex that I returned the car late and to a different city, neither of which was true. Don’t rent from Avis, and if you do, check everything before you leave the rental facility.

Avis multiple scams at CDG2 Paris airport

Beware of renting a car from Avis in France.! Their scamming system is amazing and has irregularity after irregularity, in order to cheat unsuspecting customers:
1) SCAM1: they advertise on their avis.fr pages a 'Super Cover Plus' insurance, covering with zero excess a 'Super Collision Dammage Waiver (SCDW)', a 'Theft Protection Cover (TPC)', and a 'Road assistance plus (RSN/assistance depanage etendue'). However, after you make the reservation, in the email confirming the reservation, the information about RSN conveniently disappears and you cannot find it anywhere anymore (neither on your Avis account - if you have one, nor in the reservation receipt). It is to be noted that the only difference between a 'super cover' (cheaper) and a 'super cover plus' (more expensive) should have been the RSN, but RSN does not appear in the reservation confirmation, so you lose any proof that you have paid it.
2) SCAM 2: giving you a car with slightly lower-than-the-full tank and writing in the contract that is full tank - they probably rely on the fact that most customers wouldn't queue again to Avis desk to complain for few missing gasoline liters
3) SCAM 3: adding additional fees in your contract, for insurances that have been paid already, such as RSN, or for mysterious services, such as 'additional products' or 'Travel Partner' (whatever they may mean). The clerks at Avis desk also seem trained to give you false information with a smile on their lips, for example that any extra fee you see in the contract is only for a pre-payment of a full fuel tank, in case you bring it empty. In addition, what you might have thought to be a binding reservation (if made via web) is only considered only as a 'voucher' in your contract, meaning that they can (and do) change the contractual terms from your pre-reservation.
4) SCAM 4: claiming that you drove a higher number of Km than you actually drove. As the rental fee are usually for unlimited km, they base this scam on the fact that most people would probably not pay attention to the number of Km. In our case they claimed an outrageously amount of Km (more than double than what we drove). This is probably done to be able to use the cars for private purposes without paying additional taxes or fees
5) SCAM 5: invoicing you for an empty fuel tank even when you bring the tank full and not answering for months to any complaints you are making via their contact email and webpages
6) SCAM 6: providing you confusing invoices (I found them hidden somewhere at avis.fr pages, nothing sent via email), where French invoice and English invoice use different terms for the services they claim to have provided (such as TPR counter product, LLI, PAI, etc.) and they bill you even higher than what you agreed in the contract.

In addition, contacting them via a phone number is impossible as they only have French-speaking robots as answering machines, and by email they never answer.

I would strongly recommend anyone to avoid Avis at Paris/CDG2 as much as possible. If not possible, the following precaution measures could help:
- to not buy any 'super cover' or 'super cover plus' from web as they will bill you again for them when you sign the rental contract
- to not sign anything electronically without seeing the full screen of what they ask you to sign or even asking the printed contract
- to not sign the contract before seeing the car and verifying the fuel and the number of Km
- to ask a receipt or confirmation from them about bringing the car in good condition and with full fuel tank
- to take pictures of the number of Km, the fuel tank, and the car condition at the start and at the end of the contract

Avis will make you pay extra charges!

We came to pick up our car at 5pm on Friday 9th August, 2019 and had all the paperwork. I showed the operative the 'Auto Europe' voucher and explained that I paid for extra insurance cover for the car when I initially booked the car online. He looked at the paperwork and explained that I had not taken out any insurance for the car and would have to pay 330 Euros so the car was insured. Being afraid that the car would not be insured, I payed 440 Euros, including a 110 Euro for the deposit charge.

I initially hired the car with Auto Car Europe and I feel the operative at AVIS fraudulently misrepresented us into paying the extra insurance as we felt we were not covered.

The operative also tried to get us to pay for the use of the sat-nav which turned out to be in-built.

Do not hire through Auto-Europe and Avis - they will try and make you pay extra charges.

Beware:AVIS is lying at quotation

I've rented a car from Avis at Cote d'Azur Airport on July,15 2019 according to rental agreement 390835664. The car s booking was confirmed in advance (confirmation # 0327096US0). The suggested price of renting was about €260 (taxes included) for Fiat 500 which I've finally rented. I've mentioned the number at pick up being assured that the difference between blocked amount (€392) and offered (€260) is due to fuel deposit which will be returned on car return. Besides the amount of fuel deposit being enough to fill the rented car up to the roof, finally I was charged €311, which differs drastically from that quoted. Though there were no additional services and remarks concerning the state of the car and fuel amount from the company. On return I've applied for explanations to Avis France and Avis headquarters on the subject, but got no reply besides a standard computer answer for almost 2 monthes. So I'd like to warn the potential Avis customers about being possibly deceived because this people are lying at quotation and don't care about the clients. They are scummers. Never rent from this company!

Good luck- you will need it

I rented a car from Budget (Avis) Nice Airport last October. I should have known it was not going to be a good experience when I queried some existing scratches on the car and they basically talked to me as if I was simple. I got a flat tyre on the rental and changed it for the spare. When I took the car back they told me there was nothing to pay but failed to issue me with either an electronic or printed receipt. Three weeks later they sent me a bill for over 300 euros. I contested this with the company. In January someone in the company wrote to me and officially apologised to me, finding in my favour. Unfortunately the company doesn't talk to itself and I have since been regularly harassed for payment since, including threat of disbarring from rental and debt collection letters. it is now September almost a year later. What a shambles! They must have wasted as much money again.
