AVOID AT ALL COSTS - A failed protection scheme – Certass left us to deal with the damage

We had a deeply disappointing experience with Certass, who claim to offer consumer protection and installer oversight. In our case, they did neither.

We paid over £21,000 to a Certass-accredited installer (Coulsons Conservatories, Windows and Doors Ltd) for a full-house replacement of windows and doors. The installation was severely flawed – including missing fire safety egress hinges, insufficient fixings, twisted and bowed frames, poor sealant application, no lintel support above one window and increased thermal bridging risk due to incorrect frame positioning. Trickle vents were glued in place, door sashes dropped or failed to close properly and no documentation was provided to confirm energy compliance.

Coulsons later admitted that the bifold doors they installed had no valid U-value certification, meaning they breached Building Regulations Part L. Certass had requested supporting documentation for thermal compliance, but to our knowledge, it was never supplied. Despite this, Certass took no enforcement action and ultimately closed the complaint once we refused to allow Coulsons back onto the property.

To get any response, we had to commission and pay for an independent 32-page RISA inspection report, which confirmed multiple serious breaches of Building Regulations. Certass accepted some of those findings – but only after months of chasing, missed deadlines, and repeated pressure.

Despite all of this, Certass:
• Took months to act, despite having clear evidence
• Missed or delayed replies, despite stated response timeframes
• Allowed the installer to remain listed as a “competent installer”, even after confirmed breaches
• Refused to publish our review, citing a timing technicality (submitted one day after they revoked the certificate)
• Rejected reviews that referenced Certass, despite Certass being central to the experience
• Closed the case purely because we refused to let the original installer return – after they’d already failed repeatedly

We were left to gather evidence ourselves, source replacement quotes and manage every part of the complaints process alone. Certass ultimately shielded their member and failed to protect us in any meaningful way.

To be clear – I do not believe all Certass-accredited installers are bad. There are likely many who are skilled and professional. But if something does go wrong, Certass will not support you, no matter how much evidence you have or how serious the breach. Their system appears built to protect member companies, not homeowners.

We’ve retained full documentation and have shared our experience to help others avoid going through the same.

As toothless as my old grandma !

Had Installation undertaken by a so called reg. Certass installer. Emailed them 3-4 times through their website, no response, called left a series of messages requesting a call, again no response. They do not act as a governing body or act on the behalf of consumers, in the event that some goes wrong with an installation that they will act as an intermediary, they don't. In short don't trust this organisation.

Deleting Negative Reviews

I left an honest review (compulsory in order to get your certificate) in which I laid out some issues with an installer. The review has been removed and the rating for the company reinstated. I now know how they were rated so highly when I employed them. Certass enable sub standard work by hiding negative experiences.

AVOID CERTASS Listed companies

CERTASS sent me a pdf file to explain my complaint! without reviewing my information. They don't answer emails, and there is no number to call them on. My complaint about a complaint is not answered, so I have faulty doors and no way to redress them through CERTASS> Avoid CERTASS listed companies

You cannot download your certificate…

You cannot download your certificate without being forced to leave a review. This I’m sure is illegal considering their whole business model is to provide certification and guarantee. NOT collect reviews on installers and then threaten you at the end saying warning reviews will be shared with installers. So how can you give an honest review to download your certificate? They don’t just email it with an attachment. A review is a requirement first and you can’t not leave a positive review as the installer knows it’s you. This is how awful window companies still exist. We paid a fortune for a £500 window. They installed the cheap window and only gave us £100 off and refused to remove the wrong window so we’re stuck with it. At point of sale they said it would be a premium brand and it turned out to be a cheap Linear window. Go with a FENSA installer and not CERTASS. We were tricked by a company who pay for roundabout adverts across my town but rob customers while CERTASS allows them to continue. It’s awful and thank you Certass for letting them continue existing and using your fake and forceful reviews to promote themselves by us who have already paid to be tricked. Vicious cycle that needs investigating.

Certificate “email” is deceitful almost a scam.

They send a very deceitful email
“ Certass Building Regulation Compliance Certificate enclosed”

Which implies that there is an ACTUAL certificate attached. There isn’t so when you go back to it over 6 months later they screw you for another £30 to simply press a button to send another electronic copy.
What a total rip-off and a scam. I bet lots of customers get scammed with this.

AVOID !!!!

I would rate negative if I could. Ridiculous company, they don’t care if customers are having ongoing repetitive issues with their members, or even consider to come out and inspect the property!!! The same people answer the phone which are Elen, Helen and Barry, the so called ‘manager’ who is Barry even cut the call on me not willing to listen to my complaint about his staff, in fact refusing to give names of the staff I spoke to when in fact they are all answering calls within the same room. One of the staff refused to give their name when I asked to this further. But no use as Barry the so-called manager is incompetent!!!AVOID COMPANIES REGISTERED WITH CERTASS!!!!

Disgusting

This rating system makes you input at least one star but I’d like to award them a negative score if I could. Disgraceful conduct on their part. Ordinary people commission companies to install windows. The installers do their part and contact Certass to advise it’s been done so a certificate can be generated. Instead of Certass simply sending a Certificate back they send you a link to the certificate which only lasts 6 months. Apparently it’s on the customer to realise this and ensure they download a copy. Inexplicable. Why not send a copy out? Because this way they can get extra money if people haven’t been informed or thoroughly read through the email. £30 to get a replacement certificate within an hour, absolutely disgusting and totally unnecessary. I do hope you realise Certass that people like me will see to it that your reputation is well known. It’s only a matter of time before this behaviour is picked up by the press. I am at a meeting with my local MP next week, I’ll be sure to mention your organisation and press for some action to be taken. Any others reading this who have been treated similarly and can’t get satisfaction from Certass would be well advised to follow suit so this gathers momentum and they are correctly regulated or have their ability to certify revoked. Unacceptable standards and totally unethical - you should be ashamed Certass.

NEVER USE

Please please please never use a company registered with certass.

They do not care what companies registered with them do.

We have paid over £2000 for windows with a certass approved company who have fitted faulty windows and certass don’t care.

In my opinion cowboy companies use certass as there’s so many loops holes it makes them look accredited when they are not.

This company is toothless to help

This company is toothless to help if anything goes wrong. Their only stipulation is that their members have a 'complaints procedure' published on their website. They will not help out with fraudulent activities or if the company is a scam outfit. My 87-year old mother has been scammed by 'Your Home Solutions' in that they refuse to refund her money, even though they did not carry out any work. This is what they do. (Website: yhs-ltd.co.uk and part of the Blue Moon Rising Group which has many scam companies under its umbrella, including Weathershield Solutions). Please be aware that this company assures you of nothing. Look to the 'Which Trusted Trader' scheme for a more reliable source of traders. Their only advice was go to Trading Standards, but unbelievably they wouldn't remove them from their 'approved' list!!

1. CERTASS should've sorted out typos

1. My Velux installer, Hessiancole of Bicester, Oxfordshire did an excellent job.
2. Sadly, Certass can't even manage to change the address for the installation on the CERTASS certificate. Their software mistranslated information from the installer and then issued two certificates, both of which contained an incomplete postal address.
3. This is annoying as I'm in the process of selling my house.
4. Having read the tally of 0NE-STAR reviews, I'll now add my own for December 2023 as an illustration of continuing problems at Certass.

No support, stay away from Certass registered contractors

Every negative review on trustpilot speaks volumes. Certass are an absolute disgrace, How they have been authorised to be an accredited certification body is beyond me.

They do not respond to emails, and voice messages, and more or less allow rubbish contractor's to self certify their work.

Another issue is the registered contractor we used had no complaints procedure in place. Which is a requirement if you wish to be registered with a trading body.

Company we used (Window-tech Interframe Ltd) based in Walsall, Westmidlands. Awful experience

They are not providing any support, to the consumer, who use their listed contractors. so I don’t see the point

I would suggest you stay away from a Certass registered contractor, you’ll be on your own if you need assistance.

Please read reviews, we are all saying similar statements

This company is a sham. They refuse to get involved when one of their members has made some errors. They do not return emails. They are not helpful and do nothing to assist consumers with legitimate complaints, citing silly reasons

CERTASS forced me to leave a review

I had to chase my window contractor for several weeks after I'd paid his invoice in order to get a CERTASS certificate for the replacement window. Eventually, after me chasing him a few times over several weeks, he sent me a link to download the certificate, but it went to a CERTASS page that forced me to leave a review for the contractor before I could download the certificate. Moreover, they made it clear that the contractor would see my review. Although I was pleased with the actual job, I was not happy with the delay in getting the certificate and the fact that I'd been pressured into giving a review. We are entitled to these certificates by law and shouldn't be forced to leave a review for the contractor in order to download them. I will avoid contractors that are registered with CERTASS in future. Buyers beware!

Stay away from Certass tradesmen.

Crosby Windows who go under same name as Clearseal Windows Merseyside put in a full house of windows and doors for a lot of money. The workmanship is shoddy and customer service disgraceful. The reason I went with them was because they were backed by Certass. 1 year later, they haven’t been back to fix the problems, I called Certass to be told Crosby Windows have not registered my fitting. And that it was not their problem. Why are these companies get away with ripping the public off? Certass are just giving these people the green light to rob the public. If I could give Certass a ‘zero’ I would. It’s going to cost me a lot of money for being taken in by their advertising of how good their tradesmen are?….. not.
