Buyer Beware - EBooks

I rented an e-book but I cannot access it. The canned responses provided by their bot are not helpful. I reached out by text and chat. When I click "Read Now" I get an error message. This is on multiple browsers and after clearing cache and cookies. I am in an accelerated course, and now I am at risk of falling behind.

Chegg used to be great. Now they are terrible and provide no reason to purchase.

Chegg used to be great because I could usually rent my textbooks for cheaper than what a lot of other websites listed. I could then find my textbooks solution manual and have access to all of the solutions in chronological order from the book, making it very easy to follow along as the semester continued. Now they have removed all textbook solutions from their services and require you to search for each question individually in order to "Simplify the Chegg experience." It would not be as bad if the solutions were still the official textbook solutions, typed out, easy to follow, and concise. But now, the only solutions available are just messy, incorrect, handwritten solutions from "Experts". They removed all of the positive aspects of Chegg and provide nothing really unique anymore. Their website is horrible to navigate anyways and always has some site element that is down. I do not understand how this simplifies the Chegg experience, but rather makes it more complicated, more stressful, and less ensuring. I will be finding a new platform to help with studying needs.

They set up an update where you no longer can access textbook solutions in order. Now you have to try to search for them using their search bar. What an absolutely terrible service. Please do not use this website.

Last week I was able to access textbook…

Last week I was able to access textbook solutions on Chegg, so I subscribed to it to have full access. One day later, Chegg textbook solutions were not working. Checking on Reddit, I discovered that Chegg said to a Reddit user that "A student would just need to search for a question from their textbook to locate this specific question in their textbook. It will still have the same step-by-step answers that were there before." SUCH A LIE!!! Now the solutions have downgraded quality in an A4 scan and researching question by question has become laborious and is made worse by not containing all the mathematical symbols that a question may contain. Chegg has become completely worthless to me and to a bunch of people, I just lost money!!! If you need to double-check your solutions or understand some questions in your textbook, don't subscribe you will lose your money. The golden era of Chegg is over!

Almost none of the answers were correct. I paid to much money to have almost none of the answers right. I did Chemistry, Math and Statistics and was hoping it would help me learn the concepts but did not do so. Chegg sucks.

Awful

Awful. Simply uses an OpenAI wrapper - like almost every company nowadays. Should've kept its human only experts and marketed that. Awful company move, awful platform. Very happy to see its stock in the mud.

$1000 Charge Threatened for $60 Rental Returned on the Due Date

Just wanted to call out Chegg for their terrible customer service recently. I rented a textbook from them (for about $60) this past semester. I returned it at the due date through UPS.

About a week or so later, I get an email from Chegg telling me that they are going to charge me $1000 if I don't return the book to them. After spending about a half hour talking to their chat on their website (some obvious AI slop) and another half hour on hold on the phone, I finally find out that they received the book two days after I returned it. They just couldn't get it together enough to actually process the return until I called them to bug them for an hour.

Unless you get some weird thrill off of randomly being threatened to have your bank account depleted by your textbook rental company, I would not recommend Chegg.

SCAM!!! They will keep charging you, and refuse to remove your payment info from their system!!!

As others have stated, this company is EXTREMELY crooked. I know of classmates that have had issues of them continuing to charge them after they cancelled their subscription, and continued to do so for MONTHS, even after multiple requests to cancel. Most had to have their bank or credit card company block Chegg in order to get them to stop charging them!

Unfortunately, I really needed Chegg myself for my studies. Just recently, I had to change my card I was using. When I added the new card, I wanted to remove the old one so there wasn't any issue with them charging the wrong account. Well, their system won't let you remove a card from their system!

I called in to request it over the phone, and the representative told me they don't remove any card information you add to the account unless you completely cancel the subscription!!! So, any card information you give them, they will hang onto, even if you change payment methods, and the only way they'll remove it is if you cancel (but even then, they're going to keep trying to charge you unless you request a block on your card)

To add... just today, I found out that they removed ALL textbook solutions!!! What is the point of using them if they can't even help us with our homework without us paying them extra?! That was the ONLY reason I signed up, so that after I worked out a homework problem, I could double check and make sure I got it right, and if not and I can't figure out where, to go through the steps to get help.

They claim you can "ask any of your questions now in their system and get the answers that way," but that's a blatant lie. They COMPLETELY removed all textbook questions, so they're not even in the database anymore. Secondly, as a 3rd year physics major, I can't even ask 90% of my problems I'd want to double-check, as they don't have most of the math symbols I'd need to enter in the problems!

This company should honestly be shut down for how crooked it is. It's literally scamming people left and right, and getting away with it. They're long overdue for a class-action lawsuit. Some attorney needs to hop on that!

I have found other alternatives that seem to be much better out there. I'd suggest you do the same.

They make it next to impossible for you to remove your card details

I wanted to cancel my subscription but without any prompting they offered me a "pause" option where I would no longer have to pay the monthly subscription until I needed the service again and could start it up again when I needed it.
This sounded like the idea option until they started requesting payments from my bank account.
I tried to contact them on their chat but as soon as I said it was for an account deletion \ cancellation they put me on hold and left me there ignoring any further messages, I tried to contact them on Twitter but all the replies to other people contact them on twitter Chegg Help directs them to Chegg contact us portal which is the very chat portal where they are ignoring me.
Easy to sign up but nearly impossible to leave
It would have been zero stars if that had been an option

Horrible experience

Horrible experience. I thought I had bought a $50 Amazon book on Chegg for $40. Yay me, I got a deal! Wrong. Apparently I rented it? Then end up having to pay nearly double what the book was worth as I had given it to a friend who is starting school next May. They hadn’t even used it yet! Who rents a $50 book for $40 and then is charged fees that end up being over the purchase price? After that I had to go through the most extensive steps to delete my account that I’ve ever experienced in my life. Why such hardcore security to delete an account to “rent” a book? If I wanted to rent a book, I would go to the library and get it for free. This was the worst experience.
