Dollar - Because they take your dollars!

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY using Dollar Car Rental. This company has the worst customer service that I have ever experienced. A 2 week prepaid rental agreement for $433 became a 1 week/6 day rental for $603 all because I tried to be proactive and let Dollar know my flight was cancelled due to a blizzard in the Northeast dropping 2 feet of snow and closing airports for several days. There is only one toll free number for Dollar, which requires waiting for 30-60 minutes for a live person, and then gets you connected to a person outside the U.S. whose English is difficult to understand. These girls are completely unhelpful and do not have the ability to put a note or send an email to the Dollar pickup location to let them know you will be picking up the car a day late. Hello? We live in a hi-tech driven world. What they can do, however, is tell you they can change the date, but NEVER tell you it will change the price. When I check to see if my reservation pickup is updated, I learn that my credit card has been charged an unauthorized additional amount and even more is due at pickup for a new total of $603 for 13 days, one less day than what I prepaid for. If a person prepays for a rental, then the car should be held for the renter regardless of whether that person picks it up 2 hours late or 2 days late, right? It's PAID for! Another call to CS and another hour wait for a live person to respond, and I am told that they cannot alter the reservation, but at the counter pickup, Dollar will honor the original price. That DID NOT happen. The pickup counter people claim to have no way to change the reservation either. I guess their computers are not up to speed with the rest of the world? I was furious. I rented the car for 1 week, despite needing it for 2 weeks. The new rental price per week was $219 vs. my prepaid one of $140. Even after airport fees, I still had already been charged more than the one week rental. Retrieving that $107.81 required tenacity and an act of patience and ultimately going through Hertz, the parent company. Even Hertz took 2 weeks of back and forth emails to finally agree that I was owed a refund. I waited the 7-10 business days for the refund to post. It did not. I had to revisit the issue with Hertz. The entire scenario was a complete runaround and Dollar's logo: Dollar - because we never forget whose dollar it is, is bogus. I will NEVER rent from Dollar again. Terrible company!

Outstanding customer service and a reliable car for Canadian winter!

I rented a car through a Czech website for my trip starting at Toronto Pearson Airport. Since I was heading to mountainous areas in Quebec, I specifically needed winter tires (which are not mandatory in Ontario). This led to a vehicle swap and a subsequent billing error.

However, I contacted Dollar’s customer service, and they were incredibly professional and fair. They took full responsibility and resolved the pricing issue quickly to my complete satisfaction.

The car itself was spotless, reliable, and handled the demanding Canadian winter conditions perfectly. The entire pickup and drop-off process was smooth and hassle-free. Highly recommend for their honest and professional approach!

I had a very disappointing experience…

I had a very disappointing experience with Dollar Car Rental at Atlanta Airport.

I made a reservation in advance, expecting a smooth pickup after a long flight. Instead, I arrived with two small children and was told that there were no cars available. I was asked to wait for up to two hours, with no guarantee that a vehicle would even become available.

After about an hour and a half of waiting—with tired kids and no real assistance—I was essentially left with no choice but to pay several hundred extra dollars to upgrade to a larger vehicle, just so we could finally leave.

This is extremely frustrating and unacceptable. If you confirm a reservation, you should have a car available. Putting customers, especially families with young children, in this situation after a long flight is simply not okay.

I would not recommend this location based on my experience.

I reviewed Dollar Car Rental in…

I reviewed Dollar Car Rental in February and gave them a good report until I looked into my credit card statement and discovered all the money they took from my account. They charged me twice, and over a month after my rental, they charged me again.
The car was good, but their billing system is terrible, and their phone customer service is terrible; they always have longer-than-normal wait times. I am not happy with their billing method at all, and I don't think I will be using them again. I am not a happy camper right now. They charged me $2 and some cents for toll charges and charged me $19.99 for a processing fee. How does that even make sense? Then, over a month after I returned the car, they charged me $62.96 for tolls again. How many tools do you pass through from New York to Canada? I paid my toll when I was entering Canada, and when I was coming back, I did not see any toll gate, so why am I being charged almost $100 for a toll?
Definitely will not use their service again.

Shameless and Unreasonable

I booked a car last year in anticipation of a wedding we are attending on the Oregon coast this summer. The airline changed our flight time this week, resulting in my need to add an extra day rental to our pre-paid contract with Dollar. The original cost of my rental was less than $200 for 4 days. To add a single days rental, they wanted to change an additional $400 to the previously paid contract. When I explained the reason for the change was the airline, their alternative was to spend money to stay at a hotel in the area and pickup my car the day it was initially reserved for. They also refused to refund the $ previously paid, quoting a $100 cancellation fee for the $180 contract. I recommend considering Turo rather than trusting Dollar to treat you fairly!

I got a rental from dollar through Priceline with a flight package. Get to the counter and it’s a $700 deposit even with a return flight ticket. Funny we called Enterprise and they waived the deposit with a return flight ticket. You are a sorry and deceitful company. I’d give you ZERO stars if i could

Holding deposit for 4 weeks

To wait 4 x weeks for return of the deposit is at best treating customers unfairly and at worst, well, I don’t have to say the word! Dollar may well point to their terms & conditions but a shame this is not considered important enough to highlight at the booking stage.

Reliable, Professional & Highly Recommended

I had the opportunity to rent a car from Dollar Rent A Car for a period of 5 months, and I must say the entire experience from start to finish was exceptionally smooth and hassle-free.

The team was highly professional throughout, and what stood out the most was their prompt support whenever I faced any issues related to the vehicle. They were quick to respond and ensured everything was handled efficiently, which made the long-term rental experience very comfortable.

A special thanks to Adharsh for his patience and assistance during my enquiries, and to Asad Khan for his professionalism during the car delivery and pick-up process.

I would highly recommend Dollar Rent A Car to anyone looking for a reliable and well-managed service. You can be assured there will be no regrets.

Dollar? Never again!

I arrived at the Dollar counter exactly on time, at the right place, with a confirmed booking.
Despite this, the staff claimed I was “too late” – which is simply not true. Their own General Terms clearly state that a car can be claimed within 2 hours of the booked time.

Instead of honoring the contract, they told me I would not get the car and I would not receive a refund.
I spent 1 hour and 42 minutes at the booth discussing with them, without any willingness to help or even acknowledge the facts.

This behavior is unacceptable and unprofessional.
Shame on Dollar for treating customers this way.

Fortunately, I had booked through Rentalcars.com. Their team stepped in immediately, arranged a new car for me, and refunded all additional costs without any hassle.
5 stars for Rentalcars.com – they saved the day.

But Dollar? Never again.

I had a very disappointing experience…

I had a very disappointing experience with Dollar at DFW Airport.

I originally booked a small car through Air France for around $500. However, upon arrival, I was given a vehicle without GPS or Apple CarPlay, which is not suitable when you are a foreign driver navigating in the US.

The staff told me my only option was to upgrade to a much more expensive vehicle (around $1500) just to have GPS. Feeling stuck and needing to drive safely, I accepted.

The next day, I returned and was then offered a different car with Apple CarPlay at a much more reasonable price (final rental around $800). This clearly shows that a suitable and affordable option was available from the beginning, but it was not offered to me.

Despite this, I was still charged about $250 for the first day with the overpriced upgrade.

I felt misled and pressured into paying for an unnecessary upgrade instead of being given a fair alternative from the start.

I hope Dollar reviews this situation and improves transparency for future customers.

Horrible experience with Dollar Rental…

Horrible experience with Dollar Rental in Alejuela Costa Rica. Booked through Expedia, when we arrived there were hidden charges, we were quoted 564.00 online, ended up paying mandatory 1300.00. They required us to get extra insurance coverage.
Customer service was horrible!

extra charged me £152 and deposit back delayed

I've paid £109 for the car rental fee on Booking.com and left £375 for a deposit at the front desk that day (the front desk told me that the deposit would be refunded within a few days when the car is returned, but when I log in to Booking.com they show it needs 28 days to pay back my deposit, and I didn't receive my deposit yet ). They also extra charged me £152 today suddenly!! That’s insane!!!

Booked and fully paid in advance for a 10 day car rental. Flight to Funchal delayed for 24hrs (weather) so arrived to find they completely cancelled my booking. I would understand if I had not prepaid, but the delay was unavoidable and I was prepared to forfeit a day of my rental. These US owned car rental companies have rules loaded like a casino.Desk staff total robots and inflexible to corporate utterly ridiculous rules. I travel to Madeira x2 year and regularly have issues with car hire. It's the worst experience. The general poor level of customer service on the island doesn't help. My advice is to hire from local independent people in Funchal.

fees on the back end

The car I rented had a catastrophic malphunction on a 2,000 mi trip. not a big deal, it happens. they sent a flatbed, hired me a lyft and even upgraded my rental! so far so good! the big problem is that after the fact, they charged me $10/ gal to fill up the car that THEY TOLD ME NOT TO DRIVE! absolutely insane. it raised my cost by well over $100.

Car switched and filthy

My reservation was for a full size car. The agent, without discussing it with me, gave me a small SUV. He did not say anything about not being able to provide the correct vehicle and gave me no choice. When I saw the car, I then had to go back to the reservation desk and request a change - using a different agent, because I did not trust the first agent. They then assigned me a car that was not cleaned!

The car's upholstery was a mess - with spots/dirt across almost all the seats. I can provide pictures, if you would like - just email me. The outside has also not been cleaned and had a number of scuff marks. Totally inappropriate for a rental.

My other complaints are really about bad/devious working practices:
1) There was a hard upsell on insurance - trying to indicate that important things were missing - by coloring two of the 6 insurances that I had prepaid for! Devious!
2) Hard sell on pre-paying for gas - which is a plain and simple rip-off. It is impossible and very difficult to plan to return a vehicle with an empty tank. I dare you to try it! How can you even attempt to provide this as a useful feature
3) The deposit was increased to $500 because I used a debit card - but this was down without any warning - it just did it. The process should stop and let the consumer know that the deposit amount is going to be different than explained.

My initial complaint just got an AI generated apology email. When I followed up, I was offered $25 - and no indication that practices would be improved.

I wish I could give lower than 1 star - they deserve zero.

Just Don't!

Was sent out with bald tires after a snow storm and I got hit with the gas gas refill scam too.
Don't make the same mistake I did. Rent directly from car rental companies and read the reviews before you click that mouse.

I would really like to give a negative…

I would really like to give a negative review. There is no service offered. Voicemails are a loop, employees not helpful. Worst experience, highly recommend you use another rental car agency. A 2.1 rating is too high for this company. Owners lose an item, but evidently whoever finds it makes the decision of who gets it as certainly my item seems to be in a black hole.
