Insufficient staff and information about car

Pre-booked hire car on-line to collect at Memphis Airport. Only one person working early evening of June 2nd and spent long time helping someone with problems, resulting in line forming. No information given about controls, which differed from many models we knew in that the gear selector was where the wiper controls would normally be (Chevy Equinox). Left car park and tried to enter location we wanted in SatNav only to get message it was not included! Thank goodness we had a map! Why wasn't this made clear? We could have added this if we had known, but this is normally included with rental cars in the UK.

I’d like to revoke my good review from before!

I wrote quite a good review for this bunch - on whichever site they directed me to - as, aside a 65 min wait for my car that wasn’t full on fuel and had no screen wash, it was decent. It hadn’t been properly prepped, but was very good overall.

Now I saw another $100 taken from my Amex for insurance and tolls! I selected the “ALL inclusive” package from Hola and was then told on collection that it was another $53 for all the bells and whistles. I asked if this includes tolls and the agent confirmed. I was pissed that Hola had lied, but $53, okay. Now I’ve been charged $14.99 a day x three days for tolls on top as well! With exchange rate fees to GBP I have paid the equivalent of $100 EXTRA for a car for just 50 hours, above the ‘all included’ rate I selected. It’s just a joke and the Dollar agent lied to me to get more $$$ out of me, and as I booked through Hola, there is no easy comeback.

So… great car, just needed full fuel and some windscreen wash in it. But a total con of a rental overall! A bit of transparency and this lot could be 4.5 out of 10 on here, but they aren’t up-front with anything!

Dishonest Company Very Bad Experience

This was the worst experience ever.
I was aggressively told I would be held accountable for not buying their insurance. They sales person was very harsh and threatening, trying to instill fear into me to buy the insurance.

I was also told I would be reimbursed for prepaid fuel that wasn't needed, when actually they don't give refunds for unused fuel. Didn't find that out until I saw the charge and called them. I prepaid for a full tank and when I brought it back it was 1/3rd full and they still billed for the full tank

Then they only had one person working during a shift change and there were 30-40 people in line. Waited a n hour to get a rental and I was then 8-10th person from the front of the line. The line behind me was massive. This was the worse service I've ever had. I really felt scammed and lied to by this company and I will never use them again.

Dollar at MIA Airport

Our experience with Dollar at MIA airport was unfortunately quite disappointing. There were only two employees working at the front desk, and it took what felt like an eternity before we were finally assisted. The lady who helped us was not welcoming, not informative, and did not make us feel like valued customers. She offered no explanation about the rental process, didn’t mention anything about insurance options, and completely failed to recommend a toll pass.

Just a week earlier, we rented a similar vehicle for the same number of days from a different car rental company. Despite the higher price, the service and overall experience at the other company were significantly better. With Dollar, we paid less, but we also received far less in terms of service and support.

The vehicle itself was clean and modern, which we appreciated. However, even a simple task like connecting a phone to Apple CarPlay turned into a hassle. The system had already reached its maximum number of connected devices because previous users were never removed. It’s a small but important detail that should have been taken care of before handing the car over to the next customer.

Both the pickup and drop-off processes were slow and lacked any sense of organization. It felt cold, rushed, and unprofessional.

All in all, if you are seeking quality service and a smooth, well-managed experience, Dollar Car Rental is probably not the best choice.

LYING COWBOYS

Awful Experience with this company, have emailed complaints department and ceo 6weeks they have ignored my emails, AVOID Dollar and Thrifty at MCO they scare you into add ons which are unnecessary! Then talk about you in front of you and when you question it they shout at you telling you your on camera!!! I wouldn't reccomend my worst enemy to use them!!! April/May 2025

more fool me for getting suckered by these thieves. booked a car for 3 days 13.80 eur per day and 22.91 location service charge and 4.95 sales tax for a total of 41.66 eur. I told the guy at the desk in dublin airport t2 that i had a car hire excess policy and he told me there would be a 2k hold on the card as there always is. my credit card was in the end billed for 116.58 euro. when i checked the pickup receipt there is a cdw of 45 euro and theft protection of 21 euro. nowhere were these mentioned on the confirmation email. next time i'll wear my glasses when picking up a rental car - but i wont be getting it from these scumbags.

Rip off company

Rented a car in New York I was offered the "option" of paying a convienience fee of 11 dollars a day to take out a surbive that would cover all toll payments on my behalf and bill me for them. I declined as I was not planning to travel extensively on freeways. Imagine my suprise when I recived a 21 dollars fee for the single time I paid a toll of 10 dollars that the toll had automaticslly detected I had been signed up for this rip off conviemience ger of 10 dollars a day by Dollar withput my comdent. They also tried to charge me 94 dollars for the fuel I used to drive 45 mimutes from a gas station to the airport but reduced that rip off when I objected. Dollar is well named, they are all about the dollars. My bill increased by 33% due to hidden charges.

Hired a car for 4 days in Oman

Hired a car for 4 days in Oman - Muscat MCT airport through a 3rd party booking site. The logistics of collection and formalities were professionally and quickly handled. From arriving at the hire desk within the airport it took less than 10 mins. A walk to P2 to collect the car and I was at the wheel another 10 mins later. The check out was extremely efficient. I always take photos of the entire car to protect myself. Hire was same to same on the fuel and limited to 800km. All accepted.
HOWEVER the damage deposit was paid and then I'm hit with "it will be returned 45 days later" FORTY FIVE DAYS LATER!!!!
ABSOLUTE JOKE.
I'm not waiting 45 days. I've instructed my bank to carry out a chargeback on day 8 post hire date. If successful I will edit this review accordingly.
I tried urging the return via email but it was ignored. I received NO reply or acknowledgment.

Update. I got the chargeback in less than 2 hours after instructing my bank. Therefore I have increased the review to 3 stars. Had it not been for this ridiculous policy I would have awarded 4 stars.

The efficiency of the hire was very good. The staff very professional. The state of the car was as expected. However they did not explain as to what to do if involved in an accident or if the car broke down. That was very poor service. The vehicle was hired out clean and returned in the same manner. The price via a 3rd party was very good. I paid 70 USD for 4 days for a small car.
So, for the lack of info and the supposed wait for the deposit return I score 3 stars.

I would not recommend nor use again due to the ridiculous deposit refund terms.

Sharp Practice by Dollar

Charged $384 for significant upgrade just to get Sat Nav when I had already rented a reasonable SUV. They registered me for highway tolls - but didnt tell me it was $40 to be registered and I could have done it for free. Very very sharp practice by Dollar and I would NEVER use them again.

They like to take all of your money

2 weeks later update:
Hertz/Dollar (same company) + Booking.com have made some corrections, and have led to rebuilding our trust in them. Not saying this was our favourite car rental experience, but it has turned out better than initially reviewed (was 2 stars).

Made the car reservation through booking.com, with full insurance.
At the counter, first we are told the insurance is not valid and we are essentially forced into a 28EUR per day policy; however, they did not explain the 28EUR is a minimum, and we ended up paying 75% more than that per day!
Upon review with both booking.com and Hertz, conclusion is we are never renting through Dollar or Hertz group of companies again.
They take you for every dollar you have!
The car was ok - clean and ran good. No complaints there.

Hidden charges

The lesson is, if it's cheap there's probably something wrong. Hot a good price for a car at Dublin Airport. Looking back at the email confirmation, everything looked good until you open up the final detail. Insurance is always the killer with car hire so like most people I've got a fault comprehensive annual policy. When I got to the hire desk I was told that if I didn't take their policy I would have to pay €7 per day. No options. Surely this figure should be included in the overall quote I received. I won't be using them again

Do not go near this company !

Do not go near this company !! I was given 4 faulty cars before the 5th was drivable !! I prepaid the hire costs for 17days to do route 66 but have now had £1200 taken from my account with no explanation !
Also on my journey i had a puncture , Dollar sent me a voucher to produce at the tyre depot but no tyre company’s would accept it as dollar do not their bills , i ended going to Walmart and having it replaced at my own cost ! There are no helpline numbers that pick your calls up , terrible company & the worst I’ve ever dealt with . Be very careful at the hire counters as they have no problem with scamming you !

NEVER RENTING A CAR AGAIN

Worst company ever. I rented a car and the price that was supposed to be $281.28 actually ended up being $1,428.00. The lady who checked us in was too lazy to change the main driver so she charged us for both drivers even though one was driving. They did not accept our car insurance and basically forced us to pay for theirs and it wasn't even full coverage. NEVER renting a car again due to my terrible experience with Dollar Rent A Car.

Dollar LAX airport - worst experience ever

The guy at the counter (DOLLAR, Los Angeles Airport) added all the optional services he could, saying everything was included. He never asked for our consent and hid the extra charges using the amount of the deposit as we only had debit cards and no credit cards. When I realized this was not the original amount, we were already in another city. I tried to call, no one ever answered. I sent several e-mails and got no answer either. Worst car rental experience ever.

Update: they finally answered and refunded the amount of the extra options that were added by the guy at the counter.

be careful you can get scammed

I've hired the car through Ryanair by dollar company, few they after I back from my holiday I noticed they took £189 from my account for cover insurance wich I already have full cover with Ryanair and I never asked for it then I just found out I scammed by them, be careful and don't sigh anything in Spanish as they want to scamming you

THIEVES!!!

Removed £30 from our account a couple of days after return, no explanation, no invoice, no receipt. Car was returned undamaged (we even had extra ins), full tank, and clean inside. Contact with them was poor even obstructive and still no refund or explanation. Avoid these bandits! FYI its basically Hertz trading under this name.

They are not transparent and dishonest. Sorry. That is Dollar. Staff was intentional on misleading on multiple topics. I do business travel. Dollar and thrifty are off my list. Honesty and transparency are a must.
