I'm registered as a tutor on First Tutors and unlike other tutoring platforms or agencies they have stuck to the practice of charging a finders fee to tutees and allowing negotiations to take place between tutor and tutee instead of taking a percentage from each lesson. Much less hassle for the tutor which is why I have stuck with them...

My experience with First Tutors has been very pleasing. I’ve had all sorts of inquiries from prospective clients, and from different parts of the country. Most of my students have come through the site. I had no hesitation in recommending the site to parents seeking tuition in other subjects.

As a tutor, I found this website very easy to navigate, create an account and connect with tutees.

First Tutors does not fleece or extort continual high commission charges from parents or tutors. It is a one off payment system.

Many other tutor sites take complete control of all payments and take a commission of up to 32 or even 35 %. Some even charge the student commission on a tutor's traveling expenses. Since COVID, many of these other sites seem to have jumped on the bandwagon to treat the entire industry as a cash cow.

First Tutors is not like that. It is a straight forward, professional, no nonsense, introduction site that puts students in contact with teachers.

First Tutors is a very professional site. Some of my students have had trouble negotiating their website to give feedback, but this is the only reason I have given them four stars instead of five.

Such a professional service. The creators have done an outstanding job - providing a great platform in which parents can easily find and select the right tutors. I don’t think the other tutor platforms come close.

I have been a teacher with First Tutors for many years and I keep with them because I do get lots of work! So many thanks to First Tutors. My only negative is that sometimes when there is a IT problem the reply can be unhelpful. For example: my teacher account was suspended because of an IT problem which I was not aware of. But generally they are a great company!

This company is a nightmare. Avoid this website if you are a qualified teacher, and find somewhere which will respect you and your qualifications. This company did not tell me that they changed their policy and allow prospective clients to not just purchase your phone number and email but your address. This would be okay if they had solely decent clientele on the website. However, I had a prospective client lie about where the area they lived in as the area they initially said was only a 30 minute commute but where they were really based was over an hour away. I explained to them that I could not commute over an hour away as I am a full-time teacher and they are not based in the area they initially said. They were not happy with this but I am not expected to travel over an hour away because a prospective client lied about where they are based. I offered them online lessons as an alternative but they were adamant on meeting me and then I told First Tutors about this and they agreed to find an alternative tutor or refund their money.

The prospective client was livid and then daily started to phone me and harass me via text saying she wants me to tutor her son. This was very scary and it made me feel very vulnerable as she was able to purchase my phone number, email address and home address and she knows what I look like as I have a profile picture but I do not know what she looks like.

I reported this strange behaviour and harassment to First Tutors and they did nothing. The woman even wrote a review full of lies when I did not even tutor her son. First Tutors refused to remove the review even though they are aware this woman harassed me and the review is fake.

Edit: The company have responded by pretending I am 'client' and asking for my details. I urged them to investigate this already and they failed to do anything so I asked them to close my account. I also reported them as well to an organisation. They flagged my response as 'illegal' and 'harmful'. Nothing is 'illegal' or 'harmful' in my review (I wish this did not happen); I just want to help & protect others.

This service charges you a finder fee and then leaves it up to you and the tutor to have dialogue. There is no taster session offered so if your child decides they don’t gel with a tutor, you still have to pay them the full amount for a lesson. Customer service told me that if I wanted a new tutor under the same finder fee I would need to leave feedback regarding the tutor. I left honest feedback which upset the tutor who sent me an extremely rude message. The same happened for the next tutor. Despite numerous complaints regarding the harassing messages from the tutors, customer service didn’t seem to care and didn’t offer me back the Finders fee. I therefore wasted £130 on trying to find a tutor with this company.I have since gone with another company who offers a 15 minute FREE no-obligation tasted session and my daughter has had extremely productive sessions with her new tutor. First Tutors seem to not care about the calibre of the people that they put on their books. All they are interested in is their Finders fee. It is not safe to give out parents’ phone numbers and email addresses. The new company doesn’t share any information regarding the tutor and pupil (apart from first name) and all is done through their website platform.
This was an extremely disappointing experience and I would not recommend you to use First Tutors. Look elsewhere for a more honest company.

Easy to use. Staged process that allows you to choose a tutor, then make initial links, then proper contact. A safe system of payment and slow release of details. Excellent follow up through email.

I moved across to First Tutors from another tutoring site which had changed its charging policy from a one-off finders fee to a percentage of everything I earned, which made my charge of £40 become a charge to tutees of £59, which meant I got no more students. First Tutors only charge a finders fee.
I was concerned, however, that as I now had no reviews, I would struggle to get work. I should not have worried. Having joined in October 2024, by January 2025 I was turning away work, which shows just how popular First Tutors are, and rightly so. So far, I have received four excellent reviews which will mean I should get plenty more work in the next academic year. Thank you First Tutors.
