About Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
Written by the company
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines operates a fleet of three elegant, smaller-sized ships, Bolette, Borealis and Balmoral. The size of our ships allows us access to more interesting places, and means we can dock in the heart of some of the world’s most beautiful cities, and our itineraries are carefully crafted so that our guests travel to these amazing places at the very best time of year.
On board, Signature Experiences showcase the history, culture, nature and flavours of the destinations you will visit – from Itinerary Insights, where special guest speakers and local experts will host talks, workshops and demonstrations to provide a deeper understanding of the destinations, to Treats of the Region, where guests can enjoy local delicacies and learn how to create delicious regional dishes.
Plus, with each ship carrying 1,300 guests or less, our ships are small enough to offer a warm, friendly and personal service where nothing is ever too much trouble.
At Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, we channel our 175 years of experience into making your holidays simply unforgettable by meticulously crafting our cruises to provide an experience that helps to create memorable journeys for our guests.

I had a lovely holiday on Borealis to Iceland etc. I love the size of the ship, wonderful food and friendliness of everyone.
Wonderful!
Wonderful on all points - hospitality, service, food and drink, staff, entertainment, itineraries, and shore tours. Great value as well.
The most organized
The most organized, comfortable, and relaxing cruise.
Fred Olsen makes you feel like a valued customer every day.
The staff is so helpful, my husband's mobility problem was handled so well both at the terminals and on board, truly appreciated.

Great food and entertainment and very attentive staff.
An older style, lovely ship. Great service but with many older disabled guests
Borealis is a lovely ship with a fantastic crew. Cruises are run on old fashioned principles of excellent service. Guests are treated so well and nothing is too much trouble.
Guests are generally older than on many cruise lines and walking aids are everywhere, from sticks to rollators, to wheelchairs (both manual and electric).
There is a smart dress code for dinner which guests must adopt to use the waited dining rooms, although a casual option is available.
The ship is old and shows some signs of this but the crew work hard to keep up standards.
We enjoyed the service, food, entertainment and variety of trips on offer but overall this type of holiday, with so many older, inactive and even confused passengers in close proximity much of the time is not really for us.
Just looked after during the cruise.

Clean cabin, good variety of meals, excellent entertainment and every one happy
A truly wonderful holiday
A truly wonderful holiday. Thoroughly enjoyed my experience from start to finish. Members of the crew / team were so attentive and always happy to assist.

This was my first experience of a cruise and I must say I had a most excellent time. The staff and crew were excellent very helpful and understanding, the entertainment director Paul was exceptional as was the entertainment team. The chef and his staff offered an excellent range of food for each session. We also had an excellent room attendant as well. All in all I would fully recommend a cruise with yourselves and have started saving for the next one.
Everything very efficiently run
Everything very efficiently run. Only complaint is being rushed at the end of meals when counters closing.
Games on Fred. Olsen
The best thing about Fred. Olsen is the games onboard (carpet bowls, darts, golf putting, etc.) Out of 1200 passengers, maybe 25 or 30 will play the games. You are called by name, so after a couple of days, you learn everyone’s name. By the end of the cruise you’ve got 25-30 new friends. Most other cruise lines have dropped the games. I hope Fred will keep them.
Friendly
Friendly, polite crew. Excellent service from restaurant & bar staff. Clean comfortable cabins. Good range of excursions. Entertainment & activities to suit most people plus interesting speakers.
That Fred.Olsen experience.
Having cruised with Fred Olsen many times, the standard of service gets better with every single cruise. Although it has never been poor. The itinerary was spot on and we enjoyed all the places we visited. The staff on board are second to none. The cabins are well maintained and kept spotless. The restaurant staff are great and very knowledgeable about the food on the menu. The bars are always well staffed and the waiters/waitresses are brilliant. As for booking our holiday, we have used a family run travel agent in Southampton called ocean world travel for 20 years, and they have been excellent as regards our booking and travel needs. Looking forward to our next cruise in November.
5 star
From start of iceland cruise embarking at Southampton .Fred Olsen team got it right .seamless.beautiful ship plenty of room i rarely had to queue for lifts. Fabulous food service abd entertainment. Tips included and drinks with meals shuttle transfers I was so impressed with talks and activities too.wonderful stops I didn't use pricey excursions though
It was a wonderfully cruise, but.
It was a wonderfully cruise, with great destinations, marvellous scenery. Fantastic entertainment on board.
The only thing I wasn't very impressed with was the menu choices at lunch and evening meals. There was too much emphasis on vegan/vegetarian meals or fish. Some days there was no red meat. I know there us the Everyday Menu, but my wife and I did have the steak off that but my wife's steak was tough and chewy and mine was under done. I had asked for medium and it was very rare.
Even in the View restaurant, we found the choices poor. Also the Chefs serving did not give you chance to look at what was on offer, it was like being in a shop and the salesman was pouncing on you!
Wonderful caring staff, disappointing food
This is the 1st time we have given such a low rating. The waiting staff were as ever 5 plus plus. Particularly Carl and Vanessa. The room service gentleman whose name we couldn't catch was brilliant and Ely, our wonderful Stewardess, was as always amazing yet again a 5 plus plus rating. Sadly the food, particularly in the MDR at dinner time was extremely disappointing. The food was cold as were the plates despite being held under heat until the sauce had hardened around the edges leaving a tide mark. We tried to address this and returned meals put comments on "penny for the thoughts cards" and the Executive Chef did follow up with us but the main course the following night, sea bass, was dry curled and disappointing. Obviously what we said has not been taken on board. Throughout the cruise, there were random addiction to the menu. Red Cabbage, not listed on the menu description, appeared in both hot and cold dishes. Likewise sautéed onions appeared unadvertised and inappropriately. The wine served at mealtimes was disappointing and the paired down wine list dull. Fortunately the sommelier was able to assist us in choosing something we really enjoyed. Sadly after 23 years cruising twice annually with Fred Olsen we will not be able to Celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary aboard as neither Bollette or Borealis will be cruising from the south of England.
Contentment on our cruise.
Crew always have a smile and aiways speak little things which make the my day.
Food always good.
Entertainment particularly the ships boys and girls are great and the ships crew performance was brilliant.
Very good cruise company.
Very good cruise company. I have been with Fred Olsen many times and cannot fault apart from the very expensive shore tours which are not good value.
The entertainment is EXCELLENT. The cabins very comfortable. The food is exceptional and ALL the STAFF are absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for another lovely cruise.
