GMX blocked my main email without warning - extremely unreliable

I recently switched all my important services (government accounts, utilities, financial apps) to my GMX email. After just a short period of normal use, GMX suddenly blocked my account without any warning.
When I tried to log in, I received a message saying “irregular activity detected” and that my account was locked. GMX has all my contact details, including my phone number and recovery email, yet they didn’t send any alert, verification request, or warning before cutting off my access.
I contacted support, and the reply was a generic automated message asking me to prove my identity by providing the email address, registration date, name, login method, IP address, etc. This is extremely frustrating, especially since I rely on this email for essential services.
Email providers must be reliable, especially when people use them for official and financial communication. Blocking an account out of nowhere, without so much as a warning, makes GMX completely untrustworthy. I’m now stuck waiting and hoping they restore it.
I strongly recommend not using GMX for anything important. Their system can lock you out at any time, and you have no control or advance notice.

Faultless

My partner and I have used GMX webmail for years without a single issue - can't say that about any other software. I've never needed to contact GMX customer support so can't comment on that aspect. I also don't use the office features or cloud storage but I have set up GMX to receive emails forwarded from email accounts I have with other providers so that I'm able to log into a single account (i.e. GMX) to view all my emails. I also use several aliases.

I must be advert-blind as the only ads I notice are at login and, for me, easily ignored. Perhaps the lack of ads reflects the privacy and security settings I have on my PC.

Best thing for me is that I find GMX email simple and intuitive, which makes it quick in use - it just works as I would expect, unlike previous email providers I've had the misfortune to use. Organiser works fine too.

As with any web-based email system, it's a good idea to have a backup alternative email client that duplicates all sent and received messages and contacts, so you won't lose them should your webmail fail.

It is supposed to allow email attachments up to 50 megabytes but mine got returned as exceeds server limit (my file was just over 38kb).

I don't like it that users have got no other option other than to accept the cookies settings which allow circa 200 partners to contact (or spam) users or access their device. This seems very insecure.

I've now deleted my account.

I wish I can give a lower star

I wish I can give a lower star. GMX just blocked me from my account claiming unusual activity and did not conduct a thorough investigation before doing so. So overnight an account I have been using for almost 10 years is gone with all the recent data. Never ever choose these guys for your own safety.

I think GMX is a complete SCAM…

I think GMX is a complete SCAM website. I set up my email yesterday and after an hour it said there was unusual activity. I gave the email to 1 person and should only have the 1 email in there and have filed 3 requests to have it unlocked with an alternate email to communicate with me and NOTHING! NO RESPONSE! I think they are just trying to gather information to sell. I had to put my DOB in to get the email.

So if you are looking to sign up for an email that you can actually get emails on, DON'T USE GMX!!!

Is GMX real or a gimmick?

Almost 2 weeks I setup an account with GMX. I tested it to make sure that the account was up and running by sending a test email. It worked. All seemed good. I gave a board I am on the email address I would be using. I was considering getting a paid account because of the features I read about. The next day, I went to log in to the account, and it was blocked for “suspicious” activity or something like that, and I was asked to contact them. I contacted them 4 times and never received anything. I set up an account with another provider. I have never seen anything like this. I would never, never trust them after my brief encounter. Be careful signing up with them—they are here today and gone tomorrow.

Poor communication — response made no sense

I emailed this company with a clear question about an email and password change, and the response I got had absolutely nothing to do with what I asked. It was obvious they didn’t actually read my email. Instead of helping, they sent a generic or irrelevant reply, which just wasted my time. Very disappointing experience — if they can't handle basic communication, I wouldn’t trust them with anything more important.

GMX blocked my account because I use VPN.

GMX blocked my account, and it's irreversible.
I use a VPN on my two laptops, which was apparently flagged as suspicious activity. It's the only activity I can think of, why the account got blocked very suddenly without any warning. Their customer service is also very slow and bad: they don't really read the message that you send.

So, if you use your own security measures,
this GMX is not able to handle it, so my
recommendation: find another service provider.

I have been with GMX for years and this…

I have been with GMX for years and this is the first time I have had a major problem . When I read the other reviews I thought I was in trouble but gmx customer services were fantastic. They asked me relevant questions that allowed me to access my email that I had lost access to. I was very pleased with their efforts hence 5 stars

Perfect simple free email

Wanted to find out more about the German company behind GMX.. led me here, pretty odd to have such a low rating.

I've not had a problem in years. Highly recommend it, use both their webmail and an imap client.

GMX shut me out without explanationcount to automate some…

I used a GMX account to automate some emails with Make.com for personal and professional testing. Nothing abusive, no spam, just simple automation of workflows. One day the account was blocked without any warning or explanation.

Since then, every new account I try to create gets blocked almost immediately, even before sending a single email. It feels like I have been completely banned from the system for no reason.

There is no real support, no way to appeal or recover access. Honestly, I cannot trust a service that shuts you out like this. I would not recommend GMX to anyone who needs a reliable email provider.
