I bought three pairs of tassel loafers from Herring. Two Herring own brand and one Barker.

Both Herring pairs were of substandard quality. The Barker ones were just faulty.

I contacted them. They said that "believe it or not" the first Herring pair wasn't substandard, despite the tassels being offset on one shoe. I didn't believe it; call me cynical.

The other pair they said were fine, "it must be your feet". I am however the proud owner of feet for which other shoe makers do not struggle to make shoes, which don't crease diagonally when I put them on (only on the left).

They said that the faulty Barkers weren't faulty, they had a "characteristic".

So I contacted Barker, who said "of course they are faulty, they should never have gone out".

Herring then ran with "Yebbut our T&Cs say if you wear them you've accepted them". It would be lovely if business were that simple. I would be selling wonky shoes to the masses at volume, safe in the knowledge that my T&Cs defended me from any trivial consumer rights nonsense.

So I decided to return the lot and not accept a replacement for the faulty Barkers, which I otherwise liked.

The response from Herring, "but we haven't done anything wrong".

Barker has now directly supplied me with the same shoes, at the same price, free from faults... sorry "characteristics".

Throughout all of this, I could not shake from my mind the dead parrot sketch. If you are unfamiliar, I suggest you look it up. Beautiful plumage, the Norwegian Blue...

I have given them two stars because, after their silly arguments, they did refund promptly.

Why do so many people exaggerate? So far so good, but who knows what will happen after using a company many times over a long period?

I've several pairs of high-end boots but Trickers, Loake and RM Williams and my Herring boots I bought in the sale are just as good. I love them! So comfortable, right out the box. Really good price on the sale too. Highly recommended.

easy to deal with, great service, and I like the quality of the Herring Shoes, which offer very good ratio of quality to cost. Nothing hidden, no smoke and mirrors, I own 2 pairs of Herring branded boots, which are made in India. I've not had to have either pair resoled yet, but they look like they will rebuild well enough.

Advised on purchasing a pair of Carlos Santos shoes saying that they were the same quality a Cheaney. I went ahead. After wearing the pair on maybe 15 to 20 occasions, I noticed loss of colour on the toe caps and vamp. Also noticed that the leather superficial layer was lifting off the undersurface. Given advice by Sean who basically told me that some chemical had come into contact with the shoes.
After long emails, they decided that the customer was wrong and that was it. £300 pounds on a pair of shoes rendered cosmetically unwearable compared to all my other shoes, some older and much cheaper.
Anyway, I told them put them in the bin.
Was told by Chris that Herring own brand is by Carlos Santos. It seems from other reviews that their own brand i.e. Carlos Santos aren't that great. Cheaney they are not. They aren't even up to Loake standard, even the Design range.
Basically they seem happy to lose a good customer with a genuine complaint.
Very poor show all round. Will not be buying from them again.

I made an on line purchase for a pair of shoes on the christmas day & requested the shoes to be delivered after the new year holidays. It was a brand new but discounted item at 50% the original price. The shoes arrived in pristine condition, nicely packed up in the original box with dust bags, extra laces & a tin of Herrings shoe cream. Mr Sean Prowse rom the customer services was extremely helpful & kept me updated step by step through out until I received the shoes. It was a wonderful experience & was my 2nd purchase from the Herring shoes. I would certainly purchase in future from them & strongly recommend any one this company.

The best customer service, what a team. I lost the buckle from my favourite bag and Sean went above and beyond to help replace it. Initially I was sent the wrong size, but on letting them know, they contacted the manufacturer, they don't sell my bag anymore, and I was sent a replacement. So happy to have my bag back to it's original state.
Highly recommend both the company and their products, my partner and I now have a number of their product and are always very happy with them....hence my disappointment at loosing the buckle.

Excellent customer service and a vast range of high quality footwear. I have bought Loakes and will stick to that brand. Unless I’ve had a particular manufacturer’s shoes previously I invariably end up sending them back as the size is usually wrong. If you’re unsure about getting the right size then order a returns label at checkout as returning them is very straightforward. Loake shoes are always a very good buy as I’ve got pairs I’ve worn for years. In my opinion they’re as good as Church or Cheaney and much better value. I can’t emphasise enough the importance of good quality cedar wood shoes trees. They are essential if you want your shoes to last for years. I wouldn’t hesitate to highly recommended Herring Shoes as their range is superb, extremely competitive prices and excellent personal customer service.

I wanted to share my recent experience as it really defines the service ethic at Herring. I had a very minor issue with a pair of shoes that I owned for 10 years or more and contacted Herring for assistance. I dealt with Sean Prowse who treated me like a king, proactively kept me up to date and resolved the issue in less than a week. This level of service is why I keep coming back. Well done Sean - such service is unbelievably rare these days.

Herring are great at selling other quality brand shoes. Just don't buy their own brand that they are trying to pass off as a quality shoe. Very prone to water damage, leather deteriorated very quickly, customer service appalling. I'll be going back to Loake, they last for years and can be resoled again and again. Herring shoes are going in the bin...

Herring shoes are good. The service price and quality are excellent.
I always go here first.

I have bought from Herring for the last 18 years. They are the best. I get delivery overseas and they arrive within a day ir two. Once, their website advertised a shoe at a mistakenly low price. They gave them to me at this price. Another time, they sold out of a shoe before my order was processed. They recommended a similar shoe and gave me free shoe trees. Herring is a superb company.

I have been buying from Herring Shoes for a few years now, as I like the quality of their shoes & boots, which is top notch. I am also a great fan of their customer service. The times that I have had to get in touch, their response times are very quick & always deal with any queries there & then, without delay.

Shocking customer service and don't believe their price promises. Its just baloney.

They shouldn’t have taken the money, if they didn’t have the stock.

Bought a pair of shoes in the Herring sale - shipped internationally. Arrived within 2 days in beautiful box, each shoe in an indivdual shoe bag, with cream and a shoehorn. Shoes are absolutely beautiful - well made and high quality. Took a day or two to wear in and soften up a bit but now comnfortable for work. Really pleased and highly recommend. Will be coming back in the future.

Herring are not a bad company. I must have bought 10 pairs of shoes from them over the years (maybe more). I have had 1 mild problem that they put right to my satisfaction.

HOWEVER.. I have spent close to £400.00 on some pairs, and a lot lot less when I buy bags, belts or trousers/shirts etc.

I have always enjoyed free delivery (I believe historically this was £50 or £30.00 although I could be incorrect).

When I buy these luxury items (shoes) I always get a plastic branded shoe horn and some cream polish. This is a nice touch although really expected at this price point.

I have just bought a pair of shoes (admittedly on sale).

Now all of a sudden you don’t get a shoe horn, and you don’t get any polish, and you don’t even get free delivery (I think you now do above £150 which is maybe ok on shoes but ridiculous on anything else!). £85 jeans, and £20.00 set of socks and they charge you to buy them!

However they have, in the name of progress, got some scheme allowing you to upgrade to ‘CordWainer’ status so that you now get what you always used to get for free anyway.

CordWainer membership:
- Free delivery and returns. (Delivery should be free and returns arguably would be expected too). (Spend £75 on a belt and pay to have it delivered and if it doesn’t fit pay to have it returned!!)
- Free gifts in the package. If you spend £400.00 on shoes I think a plastic branded shoe horn and some cream (£2 to herring??) is expected?!! It used to be free.
- A named customer relationship manager… Hmm, on a yaught maybe, but for shoes. Really?

Now, plenty of places offer these types of schemes (not with such pretentious names). Next delivery savers etc at £12.00 and such like. The cost to you as a herring customer however. £100.00! I have to repeat that, the cost of free delivery below £150.00, free returns, and a gift in the shoe box is £100.00. Yes one hundred pounds.

I am sorry but if you buy 1 or 2 pairs of shoes a year (it’s £100.00 a year!!) this is insane! And if you buy lots of shoes and such like, really this should be included.
