Refused to replace failed under-oven drawer—ignored email, tried to upsell instead

Kitchen fitted less than a year ago. The AGD5597 under-oven drawer housing failed despite very light use—the plastic parts that retain the drawer crumbled and the drawer dropped.

I emailed Howdens with the details and evidence. No reply. Instead I received a sales call about their yearly promotion. When I asked about my complaint, I was told they couldn’t replace it “because it snapped.” That’s exactly the point: it failed under normal use and well within a year.

This feels like a poorly designed/low-durability component and poor after-sales support. I expected a repair or replacement to be arranged quickly; instead I was bounced and left with a broken drawer in a near-new kitchen.

Based on my experience: 1 star.

I wouldn’t recommend until Howdens improves product quality on this item and responds properly to faults rather than trying to sell more products.

Excellent customer service

Ordered doors and ironmongery, expressing I needed a complete order on the Monday. Which I was promised would not be a problem. I arrive Monday morning as agreed to find less than half my order available! With the second half due in the following day! When I explained this wasn’t the arrangement, I was told the person I dealt with was on holiday and they would have to check with them before confirming! Making me out to be a lier!!! I then had to drive to another depot to collect the rest of my order!! Worst customer service I’ve ever experienced!!!!!

I’ve been using Howdens for several years and they’ve never let me down. Their kitchens are solid, easy to work with, and look great – perfect for the demands of social housing projects. The service is always professional and efficient, with quick turnaround times and helpful staff who understand what I need. Their stock levels are reliable, which is a big plus when working to tight deadlines. Highly recommend Howdens to any tradesperson looking for quality and consistency.

We experienced a high pressure sales appointment promising the world and after payment no support at all. On our visit we experienced the old fashioned sales pressure to sign and pay deposit before the apparant sale ended. I left the appointment after refusing to pay an immediate deposit there and then only to be sworn at by one of the sales staff. I decided to make an official complaint.
We were convinced by Howdens to attend a further appointment with a different sales rep. We did. We designed. We ordered. We paid.
However the whole experience has turned into a complete nightmare. Howdens management now offering no after sales support at all. They have our money!!
The staff at Howdens are placed under huge pressure to meet targets. Such a shame guys. Tread carefully.

I’ve purchased 2 personal kitchens from Howdens in Hemel Hempstead over the last 10 years in my previous and current house and although most if not all of the staff have changed in that period I can honestly say that all staff members are extremely helpful, polite, friendly, and professional. I have got to know the current team quite well over the last few months from Allan the designer, store personnel such as Zoe, Luke, and Neil, and Harry in the warehouse, (have dealt with a few others but unfortunately never got their names) all of who have been extremely helpful whether that be in person or over the phone.

Howdens quality of products is also very good and never had a problem with items fitting together etc (just problems with the kitchen itself such as wonky walls and awkward positioned pipework etc! 😄)

I’d highly recommmend Howdens Hemel Hempstead to anyone, for quality of products and excellent customer service,

Every time I make a purchase from my local Howdens, the experience is made better and easier due to the knowledge of all their products by the staff, giving a friendly service and a great back up service, even just by answering technical questions.

I would highly recommend anyone to Howdens.

I would like to say how impressed I am with Howdens, Hemel Hempstead. I had an oven issue that I was having trouble getting repaired. I contacted Howdens as I had previously purchased my oven from them, and they helped me in my hour of need. They took all the stress out of dealing with a repair company that after 4 long weeks, had not returned calls or ordered my correct part. I want to say thank you Howdens, Hemel Hempstead!!
