About The University of Law

Written by the company

With a rich heritage and a reputation for innovation and contemporary teaching practices, we continuously focus on developing the best legal and business minds.

We are the largest provider of legal education, with more law students choosing us than any other UK university in 2023 (HESA 2022/23). What really sets us apart is the guiding principle that future lawyers and business leaders should learn in a realistic, professional and contemporary context, with plenty of practical interactive engagement. That's why we keep our contact hours high and our teaching groups small.

All of our courses – from our undergraduate law degrees to our diverse range of business courses and postgraduate programmes – are designed with a unique, varied and innovative learning approach proven to deliver self-reliant professionals who can compete in the fast changing professional world.

Our track record of excellence in learning and development has helped us establish worldwide connections within the legal and business industries. We provide legal training for 90 of the top 100 law firms in the UK and exclusively deliver SQE training for over 65 leading UK and US law firms.

More than 400 of our lecturers are qualified lawyers and business professionals, and all have extensive practical experience which they are able to pass on to our students. We facilitate this process with high levels of student-to-lecturer contact time and small class sizes - one of the reasons that many firms insist their trainees study with us.

We focus exclusively on practice-based training and give students access to our expert Careers and Employability service database as soon as they accept a place with us. Students also benefit from our pioneering and award-winning pro bono programmes, which allow them to gain valuable work experience by helping real clients from the local community.

We were ranked in the top 10 for our quality of teaching across UK universities in the NSS 2024 (7th in England) and in the Office for Students (OfS) Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023, we were awarded an overall Silver rating, with a Gold rating for Student Experience and Silver rating for the Student Outcomes.

Nearly 3 months and still no refund

Avoid paying upfront with this institution unless you're prepared for a fight to get your money back.

I placed an order in March 2026 totalling £1,645.21 for an SQE course and study manuals. cancelled my enrolment shortly after, within the 14 day cooling off period, and the manuals were never even delivered despite paying for insured tracked shipping. Since then it has been nothing but excuse after excuse. On multiple occasions I was told the refund had been "raised with Finance" and would land within 28 working days. Each time, nothing happened.

I have been chasing weekly for months with no real response. In my last email I made clear I wanted to formally complain. Their reply? Just that they'd copied me into an internal email and I "should hear back shortly." Shortly? What does that even mean. No acknowledgement of the complaint, no named person taking responsibility, no payment date.

Nearly three months later, I am still owed £1,645.21 of my own money, and it is now actively stopping me from enrolling on a course elsewhere. If you want your money back from this place, be prepared to chase it relentlessly yourself, because nobody internally seems to care enough to do it for you.

Awful SQE1 course and no response from Student Records

I did the SQE1 course in 2022 at the University of Law and it was terrible. The tutors had no idea about the format of the exam and the nature of the multiple choice questions, and they were very open about this.

It was taught like the LPC, with longwinded textbooks containing irrelevant information, and essay questions discussed during tutorials. They set us up to fail.

3 and a half years on and I am now trying to enrol as a solicitor. My application has been stalled for weeks as the university have not validated my degree. Student Records have not responded to any of my emails and they do not have a direct line so you cannot speak with anyone in the department. This is preventing me moving into my new job role. They are truly a shambles.

Delayed Refund and Poor Communication After Course Withdrawal

I applied for the MSc Marketing with Professional Practice program and received an unconditional offer from The University of Law. Following the university's instructions, I paid £8,000 towards my tuition fees.

During the visa process, I was advised to obtain a priority visa service. However, this service was not available to me. When I informed the university about the situation, I was later advised to proceed with a standard visa application instead. Despite following their guidance and keeping them informed, my application was subsequently withdrawn.

The most disappointing part of my experience has been the handling of my refund. It has been almost two months since my application was withdrawn, yet I have still not received my tuition fee refund. While the finance team has recently acknowledged my refund request, the process has been extremely slow and there has been very little proactive communication regarding timelines or progress.

As an international student, I have also incurred significant additional costs throughout this process, amounting to approximately £2,000, which has resulted in a substantial financial loss.

I understand that universities have procedures and policies to follow, but clearer communication, better support for international applicants, and a more efficient refund process would have made a significant difference to my experience.

Unfortunately, based on my experience, I cannot recommend this institution to prospective international students who require timely communication and transparent administrative support.

A well organised online course. Excellent resources available (and lots of extras). I was challenged and my understanding was certainly broadened alongside skill development.
On the whole the team were knowledgeable, helpful and passionate.

More coersive and bullying tactics from the student finance department

EDIT: That doesn’t answer the complaint, Rachelle, the university’s student finance team is getting vulnerable people caught up in contract through deception and then employing coercive tactics during an appeals process. Replying that they’ll respond to the appeal soon publicly shows the full lack of empathy one can expect to see if they join as a student.

Further to my review in April, my complaint regarding student finance department has gone to formal stage. Student finance have repeatedly chased me for that same money since and I have sent multiple emails explaining the situation to them. Today I received an email stating because I haven’t replied if I don’t pay or contact them in the next 7 days (I’ve been emailing them!), the full amount will be owed immediately.

I will not receive a reply to my complaint prior to this deadline, and the student finance department are aware of it. I don’t appreciate disgusting coersive or manipulation tactics towards myself as a disabled and vulnerable individual - which they are aware of. The entire complaint is about previous manipulation on the student finance departments behalf.

Unsupported and Misled: My Experience Navigating University Administration as an International Student

My experience with the university administration was incredibly stressful and disappointing. I ended up facing serious issues with my exam due to incorrect information given to me by university staff, yet when I tried to resolve the situation, I was constantly passed between departments with no clear answers or proper support.

As an international student, the lack of urgency and clarity was especially alarming because my visa status depended on the issue being resolved. I was repeatedly given false reassurance that everything would be sorted, while weeks and months passed with no progress. The situation dragged on until just days before my student visa expired, and it was only at the very last minute that my issue was finally resolved, allowing me to apply for my post-graduate visa in time.

No student should have to experience that level of stress due to administrative failures and poor communication. Overall, I found the university staff extremely unhelpful, disorganised, and lacking accountability, particularly when it came to supporting international students.
