Jett assisted me very well when I was buying an electric step at Hasselt Mediamarkt. He also helped me in the insurance and making an account on the app.

Sold as new, but clearly used — no explanation provided

I am writing this review after a prolonged and deeply frustrating experience with MediaMarkt Belgium that goes far beyond a simple product return.
In March 2026, I purchased a Canon CanoScan LiDE 400 online and collected it from the Brussels Nieuwstraat store. The product was sold and invoiced as new. However, upon opening the box at home, it was immediately clear that this was not a new device. The packaging was not properly sealed, the contents showed clear signs of prior handling, and the scanner itself had visible scratches and wear consistent with previous use.
This alone is already unacceptable. A product sold as new must be objectively new. Anything else should be clearly disclosed.
What followed was even more disappointing.
I contacted customer service and submitted a formal complaint. Instead of receiving a clear explanation, I was met with a series of repetitive, template-style responses that failed to address the core issue. Not once did anyone provide a concrete answer as to how a used device could be sold as new. Not once was there any meaningful transparency about internal quality control.
Yes, the refund was processed after I returned the product to the store. That is the absolute minimum expected under consumer law — not a resolution of the actual problem.
The central issue remains completely unaddressed:
How does a large retail chain allow a visibly used product to be sold as new?
To make matters worse, I later purchased another scanner (Canon LiDE 300) from the same store, and again noticed visible scratches on the device straight out of the box. At that point, this no longer feels like an isolated incident, but a pattern that raises serious concerns about stock handling and quality control procedures.
Throughout this process, communication from MediaMarkt has been consistently superficial. Polite wording, but no substance. Apologies, but no accountability. Responses that give the impression of activity, while carefully avoiding the actual question.
For me, this is not about the refund. It is about trust. When a retailer sells a product as new, customers must be able to rely on that claim without having to question whether the item has already been used.
My advice to other customers is simple: inspect any product carefully before leaving the store. Do not assume that “new” always means new.
This experience has left a lasting negative impression — not because of a single defective product, but because of the complete absence of transparency and meaningful customer care when the issue was raised.
