Finally Seeing What I Want

As someone who used to regularly fly from larger airports such as London Heathrow, I was left impressed by the departure lounge of NCL airport, spoilt for choice in terms of food options with all dining areas having plenty of space. I opted for a more local delicacy being the breakfast menu of Burger King. One small criticism is that I think the lack of Greggs in order to keep with the geordie stereotype would have been the icing on the cake (or stottie). I was also pleased to see, unlike Heathrow, that not everyone was having a No.2 in the toilets at the same time. So my visit was punctual and clean!

But I think one of the more fantastic features of the airport is it’s customers. It is a mecca for people watchers like me. Life in Newcastle since moving from London in December has had me a little disappointed that the stereotype has not been followed in the city centre. But all that changed once I collected my bag from security.

We had the trowel-applied made-up faces of the Malaga hen party, completed by the 10am round of sambucca shots, refused by the group’s photographer. One of the party was clearly in a rush as sweat streaks were washing off the MAC products from her forehead.

We had the ‘lads lads lads’ group with the thinking that Dublin was more sophisticated then Amsterdam. Completed with their ‘never to be removed before we get to the hotel’ neck pillows to ease the toils of a 45 minute flight. And don’t get me started on the Crocs!

We had the already-been-tango’d group of 3 in their mid-30s who haven’t yet made it home from the Steps, A1 and Aqua show at the Metro Radio Arena back in 2001. They were sporting blonde tipped curtains and a shade of brown tan I could only describe as ‘Virgin Atlantic Cedar’ despite Virgin no longer servicing the airport.

We then had the tracksuit family who also chose Crocs for their tarsal covering. They clearly wanted their 40min trip to Bristol to be like a relaxing night at the Bracknell Travelodge. Lee Evans did a sketch saying they were always late to their flight, and he wasn’t wrong. They are however, first at check-in. So how was this possible? Ah yes, the wonderful choice of electrical appliances at Dixons that they were never going to purchase but kept uttering to their 8 year old “Put it on your list for Santa!”.

And finally, we had the 2 ladies who had their lips topped up the night before, connecting to their long haul flight at Heathrow, asking people to swap seats so they could spend their 50min flight together snapchatting their Italian siblings the ‘fit’ baggage handler and recording Carlos the pilot’s quite amusing welcome announcement. I know what you’re thinking, and yes, they did ask for the Vegan cereal bar on board.

With times as tough financially as they are, Newcastle Airport could really benefit from a ‘viewing area’ where tourists could pay to see these wonderful artefacts on show and up close. To be honest, I’d pay a flight fare just to see it all again. Roll on 19th May!

Very poor list of destinations from…

Very poor list of destinations from Newcastle. Great if all you want is a boozy hol to somewhere similar to Spain, but for all else you need to go to another airport. Only link to London is with BA to Heathrow and you need a mortgage for that! Add on your forward flight from Heathrow and the costs seriously mount up. At one time there were flights to Stanstead and Gatwick, but no more.
All in all this just adds to the North South divide. Live in Manchester or South and the world is your Oyster, live in Newcastle and your options are seriously limited unless you can afford connecting flights from Heathrow or you can afford to drive and park at Manchester.
In all, a very poor deal for us in the North of England.
And I won't even go into the filthy and expensive bars and restaraunts airside, the rip off drop off and parking charges and waits at passport control when you fly back in again. All this adds up to make air travel a really horrible and stressful experience.
The only positive thing I can add is if you want food, get it downstairs at Greggs before you go through security upstairs.

An awful place for the late evening hungry traveller

I fly into and out of Newcastle airport every week, due to work. Most of my flights out of there are evening flights, so I’m usually at the airport 6-7pm after leaving the office.

The food choices at that time in the evening are abysmal. Most places (eg Cabin) are closed, the places that are open are serving tasteless bland over priced reheated food and the sandwhiches have been stripped bare from smiths and boots.

It’s awful. Not even Burger King is open. A terrible airport

Excellent experience - again!

I travel thru Newcastle Intl Airport at least every couple of months (BA to Heathrow). Have to say I love this airport and every member of staff that I have encountered over the past year or so has been great, efficient, friendly, helpful etc whether security or the Aspire lounge. For that reason its my preferred UK airport - by some distance. For those that don't like it - I suggest trying Manchester Terminal 3!

Filthy

We recently went to Dubai and I am ashamed to say that Newcastle Airport was filthy. No cleaning staff in sight, got checked in, through security and oh my goodness, the areas around the cafes/bars was disgusting, not just dropped chips etc but just filthy windows, paintwork, etc. Obviously places are going to be busy but surely someone from the outlet must keep the area tidy? On return the escalator wasn't working, had to use stairs, carpet dirty, waited a while for passport control and baggage and I really can't understand why it should be like that and that it can't be cleaner. Managers should take a look at Dubai airport, you could eat a meal off the floor it's so clean.

Yes Gary...you are right

Yes Gary...you are right! and nowhere more so than the microcosm of passport control at Newcastle International Airport. Not only are the Home office 'institutionally racist' and 'not fit for purpose' but also 'incompetant.' An arrival procedure that pre-brexit took less than 3 minutes, if any time at all, now takes up to half an hour. Firstly you are herded like cattle towards an IT system which is at best useless or towards a staffed desk, staffed by people who are trying their best to portray England as a fascist/police state that it is becoming. ( I had the welcoming experience of both home office guards and the army). Put young under educated people into uniforms and history shows us where that leads!
Be Careful!

Kind staff

The queue to go through security was unusually long. So long we thought we'd miss our flight. The members of staff at security were really kind, patient and understanding and helped us out a lot. We went through really quickly once we got to security. Turns out our flight was delayed haha

Wonderful Airport

I recently landed at Newcastle Airport for the first time and I was taken poorly going through passport control. The staff were fabulous as was the lovely lady behind me who stayed with me for quite a while. What a wonderful Airport, I would use it all the time if I could. Thank you to everyone including the firemen who also were on hand with their medical assistance. I really appreciated your friendly, genuine concern for my welfare. Sue

Stung for car parking charges …

I was stung for a car parking charge (£60) due to a simple error of stopping (less than 2 minutes) in a place that I wasn't meant to. I wanted to drop some friends off and it was really unclear where I might be able to do that and so got into a panic. In my view, this is a form of entrapment by an airport trying to exploit money from customers by whatever means. I won't use this airport again for any reason.

I must say

I must say, best airport in the UK. My mom traveled on the 27th of November, 2022. She was anxious and her mobility is not that great. The lady sat at the passenger assist desk, was lovely. She reassured my mom and got her all the help she needed even taking her to the toilet before boarding. Mom got back home safe and she is not scared of traveling back to the UK anymore. My family and I and soo grateful to the entire Newcastle International Airport team for making her travel enjoyable.

Security staff are fabulous

Security staff are fabulous, always get through very quickly and most of the airport is kept clean. However the outlets run by SSP are a disgrace and should be made to keep their areas clean or be kicked out, they charge a small fortune for food and drinks so should pay staff to properly maintain the place. Until they clean up their act I will bring my own food and drinks
