Great new option - After many years of renting in Dublin…

After many years of renting in Dublin with the major brands (hidden fees, stressful insurance upsell, deductible surprises etc.), i have now switched 100% to renting with NewWay. I have used NewWay twice this year and I'm 100% satisfied - I love the all in rate including insurance that is still very competitive plus the pick up and drop off at the airport terminal (no offsite shuttle bus). Their staff are friendly and the experience is totally absent of stress (anyone who has rented at Dublin airport knows what I mean!)

Hi Shane,
Thank you for your wonderful 5-star review.

The parking spaces are allocated by the Dublin Airport Authority. We will do our best to provide a car on site but due to these constraints, we can’t guarantee it.

We will do our utmost to facilitate terminal pick up but unfortunately it cannot always be guaranteed, especially in busier times.

Had a great experience with NewWay Car…

Had a great experience with NewWay Car Hire. I work in the credit card space and live in NYC so I don’t have primary car insurance and am very familiar with the embedded credit card insurance. Many cards exclude Ireland from coverage and unlike typical car rental companies NewWay includes collision damage and liability without any of the super expensive daily add ons. It also doesn’t have a lot of typical exclusions for tire only damage and windshields. Great experience all around.

Collected car from airport car park just a 2 minute walk

Collected car from airport car park just a 2 minute walk from the arrival terminal after collecting key from the NewWay desk in the arrival hall. However large scrape damage on passenger side a bit unsightly and the vehicle ( Renault Capture) had seen a lot of use and the seats were not very clean. The main reason for my choice using New Way was the benefit of no extra cost for insurance which made for a lower overall cost. I had to pay a fuel deposit of €170 that was returned when returning the car with a full tank of petrol. Given all this I would still choose NewWay based on the fact that no extra hidden insurance costs needed to be paid. You knew exactly what you were paying for. Maybe I might choose a higher spec car the next time. Overall ****

Deep gash in hire car tyre

I hired a car from Dublin airport. Fortunately I checked the car thoroughly before driving off. I found a very deep gash in the sidewall of the front nearside tyre. How this passed the company’s safety inspection I do not know.
On returning to the desk, another car was issued immediately and there were no further issues. This problem only caused me a lengthy delay leaving the airport, but I dread to think what the outcome could have been if the tyre had blown at 120km/hr on the motorway. Newway- improve your safety checks!

Avoid like the plague - car breakdown (with kids) and zero support

1 star only because I cannot give 0 stars.
TL;DR - Car broke down one hour after collecting it and they left me stranded on the motorway for over 3 hours and were uncontactable.

I rented a car from Newway from Dublin airport on December 20th. ONE hour later the car broke down on the N9. "Critical engine failure, stop driving immediately". I was in the car with my husband and two kids (aged 3 and 1). I managed to pull into the hard shoulder and tried to call Newway. Their breakdown assistance number is inaccessible from a non-Irish phone, so I had to find a number to call the main desk in Dublin airport. The lady assured me someone was on the way to assist us. I made 9 seperate calls to the desk between 14:36 and 16:36 and when they answered they told me the driver would be there "soon". They stopped answering the phone completely at 4pm.

We were left on that hard shoulder, with two kids and no access to toilet facilities, food or drink for over 3 hours. We were only an hour from the airport, in an unsafe location in the dark in a cold car. Finally when we had given up hope and called family in Carlow to come get us, a tow driver arrived with a replacement car. He also mentioned being unable to contact Newway as they didn't answer the phone. They also hadn't given him a number for me (or vice verssa). The replacement car was smaller and had tire pressure issues, and a few other dashboard warning lights, leading me to think it's not one-off bad luck but overall lack of maintenance.

Look, I get it, cars can breakdown. But Newway turned what should have been a minor inconvenience into a absolute nightmare. If they had been honest about how long the delay would have been, I would have gotten a taxi back to the airport or something. Instead they kept promising me it'd be "soon" and then they disappeared off the face of the planet at 4pm.

Of course, they were super apologetic right? Wrong. I wrote a formal complaint email documenting the issue in detail. When it was responded to (4 days later) Sean gave me some generic "disappointed to hear that" language and didn't actually address most of the points I made. I was not looking for a free rental. I asked for a refund for the first day, clarification on whether the replacement car was the same class (and a refund of the difference if it was a lower class) and assurances on the safety of their fleet. Instead Sean offered me a 10% discount on my next rental (you know, the same discount that you get if you sign up for their newsletter) along with some generic apology language in an email, never even called me. The only positive interaction I had was with Damien at the return desk who felt sincere, and I'm not honestly even sure if he worked for Newway or for the airport.

Avoid like the plague. I travel home 2-3 times a year and rent a car and never had an experience anywhere near as bad as this. (Booking my summer holiday rental reminded me I never put this review online)

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are genuinely very sorry to read about what happened during your rental – particularly given the difficult circumstances you describe with young children involved. This is certainly not the level of service we aim to provide, and we fully understand how distressing and frustrating this situation must have been for you and your family.
While vehicle breakdowns can occasionally happen despite regular servicing and maintenance, situations like this are very rare. That said, our priority is always to resolve any issue as quickly and safely as possible.

I rented a car through New Way. Everything was absolutely perfect. The car was clean, the handover was quick, and everything was explained very well. The car was in good condition, all insurance was included in the price, and returning the car was also very quick and without any problems. I highly recommend them.

Misled by staff, scammed on fuel, and given a battered, smelly car. Avoid

Misled by staff, scammed on fuel, and given a battered, smelly car. Avoid.**
**Rating:** ⭐☆☆☆☆ (1/5)
Avoid NewWay Car Hire unless you want to be completely misled by staff, hit with astronomical hidden fees, and given a subpar vehicle. I usually use a major operator like Enterprise, but I wanted to support a local Irish business this time. I won’t be making that mistake again.
To start, the vehicle itself was in poor condition. The car was all banged up—which I suppose is to be expected from a rental company that relies on a "full insurance included" model where vehicle care is clearly neglected. To make matters worse, the interior had a distinct, unpleasant smell, like something damp had been left rotting inside it.
But the real insult came with their predatory fuel policy. I rented a 2024 Toyota Corolla Hybrid and returned it 5/8 full. Since the vehicle has a 43-litre tank, it required roughly 16.13 litres to fill. At the local pump price of €1.89/L, the actual petrol cost should have been around €30. Instead, NewWay debited **€70.25** from my account. They effectively charged me **€4.36 per litre**—a massive 130% markup.
The worst part is the outright dishonesty of the staff. When I picked up the vehicle, the counter agent explicitly assured me that if I didn't return it full, they would simply fill it up and charge me the actual cost of the petrol. Then, at drop-off, I was prepared to use the petrol pump located right beside the return yard, but the attendant explicitly told me "not to worry about it."
To be told by yard staff not to worry about filling up, only to be secretly slapped with a €40 premium, is deceitful. I contacted customer care (Ticket ID: 666406) to resolve this, but they refuse to acknowledge how badly their on-site team misinformed me.
Shameful business practices from start to finish. Save yourself the headache, skip the "local" excuse, and stick to a reputable global rental company instead.

Hi Michael,
We are disappointed to see your review.

We're sorry to hear you were unhappy with the car you were assigned on pick up.

With NewWay your entire rental is prepaid in advance at the time of booking. The only thing you will need your payment card for on pickup of your rental is your Fuel Deposit. This is between €148.50 and €270.00 depending on the size of the car you have chosen.

When you return your rental with a full tank of fuel, your fuel deposit will be returned to you.

The fuel gauge is measured in 8ths. If you return the car 1/8 full you will be charged 7/8th of your fuel deposit. As you returned 5/8 full, you would have been charged 3/8th of your deposit.

The fuel deposit is more than the cost of refuelling the car to encourage our customer's to return their rental with a full tank of fuel.

Very transparant way of booking.

Very transparant way of booking and trustworthy appearance. A bit surprising was the need of info when returning the vehicle. During our more then 1000 km’s we encountered one little stone on our windscreen, due to a truck which came on to us. As such no problem because we are fully insured, but we could have been more specific with our info id we had known the need for this info.

With NewWay, full insurance is included in every rental. If the car is damaged during your rental, you are covered, but we do require you to fill out an accident repost form so that we can record any damages and organize any necessary repairs.

Thank you for taking the time to highlight this, as it will help other to make a more informed decision when choosing NewWay.

NewWay car rental

The lack of a huge deposit was a big draw for me that the payment covered everything and all I had to do was return it full of fuel. NewWay are a bit more expensive than the other companies, but Avis etc ask for huge security payments (up to two grand) on a card and that makes me very nervous. Car was fine and perfect for the environment. The cost was only slightly more than you might pay in the UK, so it is all good...

Should’ve Used My Irish Cousin

We should’ve gone with My Irish Cousin. I read all of the reviews and comments about how great New Way was & how they provide exceptional service and support. I firmly believe that none of those people with rave reviews have actually had a situation that required assistance. It was a nightmare. For starters, the signage is poor—at best. There are signs outside of the car park, but there is not a single building sign indicating where to go to pick up the car. We walked around and finally asked at the budget desk. They informed us that we needed to speak with them. Fine. But how were we to know that from what was displayed on the building? We were basically given the keys, told we’d be charged for gas id we didn’t return it full, that was that. The gentleman next to us, an actual Budget customer, received a full set of instructions about tolls, considerations when driving, what to do in an emergency situation, and directions for returning the car. The car itself drove well until it didn’t. We were in Bunowen, Leenane when we encountered the problem. We had been out of the car for about 1.5 hours & when we returned it wouldn’t start. Nothing. Not a whir or a gasp. Nothing. Running low on battery, & in a spot with terrible service, we did what the website says is sooooo easy. We called NewWay for help. We got them at first & explained the problem. Things looked promising—until we were put on hold. And transferred. We got picked up by another rep. Same thing: put on hold & transferred. No one knew what to do or who to connect us with. Eventually someone said they’d reach out to AA, but no one could tell me when/if that was actually going to happen. I finally connected with someone with AA, but she had NO answers. She said I would have to call NewWay, but I’d better do it before 17:00 because they wouldn’t answer after that. It was 16:55. She couldn’t find an agent to dispatch to us. I asked what would happen if no one picked up the call. She didn’t know & wouldn’t defer to anyone to ask. I asked what protocol was if the car wasn’t fixable. Yep. Again. She had no clue & even started becoming defensive. She blamed NewWay, but those are AA-level questions. She should know protocol for her own company. She did not. She transferred us back to NewWay, but guess what? It was 17:01. No one answered and we got sent to… the Budget desk in Dublin. They couldn’t answer the questions either. Instead of finding someone who could, they just transferred us to the Galway office—again. No answers. Nothing. And supremely unhelpful. Thank goodness someone DID pick up the AA dispatch. And that someone was incredibly helpful. He couldn’t get it fixed after his first, and second, and third try, but he gave it one more shot & we were off. No check ins or confirmation at all from NewWay. For all they knew, we were still on the side of the road.

Fast forward to car return. At least we knew where to go this time. And on the return booth, there was a small sign for NewWay. Alas, we were once again dealing with Budget. The return experience was the icing on the cake. It was a disaster. When we arrived, we were initially ignored. Our travel companion who also rented from NewWay piped up and asked for help. She turned in her form & I turned in mine. When she asked for confirmation of receipt, the woman at the counter indicated that my friend hadn’t returned it. She couldn’t find the form that had already been submitted on the messy, chaotic desk. After a few minutes of shuffling, it turned up, but in the meantime, my friend’s integrity was questioned. At the same time, I was told I needed to fill out an accident report for the accident I was in. Dumbfounded, I asked for clarification. She changed her wording and said I needed to report my role in causing the incident that made me call AA. Maybe it’s semantics, but I didn’t call AA. I wasn’t even sure they were going to be called at all—much less? Being asked to identify my role? Are you kidding me? Yeah. I siphoned off battery energy while we went to the sheep farm. She was relentless in her contention that I was at fault.

We signed up for a “speedy, hassle-free” experience,” with “complete peace of mind,” and “24/7 roadside assistance.” We definitely did not spend the time after the breakdown traveling “with confidence.” It was quite the opposite.

New Way is NOT the better way. Either pay the insurance with the traditional car hire services or use My Irish Cousin.

Hi Dana,

We are sorry to see your review and to hear that you experienced a breakdown during your rental.

We have desks in the arrivals hall at both terminal 1 and terminal 2 at Dublin Airport. You can visit whichever desk is the most convenient for you. From there an agent will direct you to your car.

We are sorry to hear that you had trouble contacting us. Our desks are open and there is an agent available to speak with you until 01:30 am.

We aren't part of the Avis Budget group, however, we have a great working relationship with Avis Budget. We are a small Irish business and Avis Budget are kind enough to assist us and our customers which allows us to provide the best rental experience possible. They have many locations throughout Ireland and will facilitate changeovers and offer breakdown assistance if a customer is not located near a NewWay desk. As you were in Lenaun, the Budget office in Galway was your closest location for assistance.

We can see that you experienced a flat battery due to driver error. Our roadside assistance partners, The AA, reported no fault with the car, and assisted you with the flat battery.

Avoid this company.

Avoid this company.

I prepaid €131 for a 2-day rental and was required to leave a fuel deposit of over €202. On return, the company deducted an entire extra day's rental (€65.50) from that deposit based on an alleged delay of less than one hour.

The problem? Their timestamps do not reflect when I actually had possession of the vehicle.

They claim my rental started at 14:02, but at that time I had only been given paperwork and instructed to take a shuttle to the rental facility. My Google Timeline shows I did not even board the shuttle until around 14:20, and only then could I collect the keys.

On return, I parked the car before 15:00 and have timestamped photos to prove it. Due to a lack of clear instructions, I then had to find the return desk and hand over the keys. Despite this, they treated the key handover time as if I had continued using the vehicle.

So the company charged me for a full extra rental day based on what they themselves say was a delay of less than an hour, while ignoring evidence that I did not actually receive the car at the time they used to start charging me.

Extremely disappointing. It feels less like customer service and more like finding reasons to keep part of a customer's deposit.
