What on earth happened to the dumbbell area? A complete mess!
I'm a multi-gym access Puregym user and have been going to this specific gym for 6 years or so.
Until last year this was the best gym I'd been to in terms of equipment, tidiness etc (i.e. not saunas and extras like that). Not the best Puregym, but the best gym (and I've been going to gyms since 1994).
The best things about this gym, compared to the other Puregyms in Reading was firstly the huge space upstairs that could be used kettlebells, stretching, skipping and stuff like that (and it was all the time). Secondly the dumbbells were always tidy. Always. Rarely did I spot a single weight out of place and if one was, because it was so tidy, a member would correct it. It was pretty much perfect and I took pictures to show Burnham gym how keeping a gym tidy is done!
About 7 or 8 months ago everything changed.
In the large open area new equipment cut that area in two. New equipment is great but there was a way to position the cable machines without losing most of the space that so many people used! Now if someone wants to stretch in the corner no one else can get a mat and no one can use the vibro plates because it's all squashed into one small space. And if there's five people in the area there's no room for anything else, forget all the various body weight activities people used to do there. Even if there's not five people there's no room for decent kettle bell workouts etc. The best feature of the gym has gone!
Secondly someone re-organised the dumbbells. How they were organised before made sense but no one uses a 10K and 50K dumbbell at the same time. Also the dumbbells no longer get tidied up and because the staff don't put the weights back in the correct place the members, even the ones who liked to help keep it tidy, have given up trying themselves. What before was the best dumbbell area I've ever seen in any gym has slowly become a complete mess.
On Tuesday 28th Feb it was the worst I'd seen it. The care and attention that went into keeping that area perfect just stopped and even if gym users want to put dumbbells back into the correct location they can't because it's just all over the place. What on earth happened?
Maybe you think this isn't that big a deal but if I spend 10 minutes of my work out looking for the second dumbbell or even the pair then that's 10 minutes I'm not working out.
It's the perfect example of if it isn't broken, don't fix it. Basingstoke Road was the perfect but someone wanted to fix that and we have a mess. This PureGym now it's an example of what not to do. Even Burnham, which used to be really bad, is far better than this gym.
It's a real shame! I still use the gym because the equipment is good, nothing wrong with that, so if I'm training in Reading and I'll be traveling there in rush hour I go to Basingstoke Road. But if not then I use Caversham Road gym instead. Yes that gym is quite tight on space but the staff keep it very tidy and I don't waste time looking for dumbbells.
I hope someone returns Basingstoke Road to it's former glory.

I have had good experience at the Reading Basingstoke gym and access to machines without long waits. Cleanliness is ok, however it can be improved, especially, bathrooms and toilet facilities.

Staff do undertake regular maintenance checks and work hard with our equipment providers to ensure that our equipment is fixed as soon as possible, if any should be broken. We are equally as disappointed when this happens and sometimes need to wait on engineers but will have all equipment in full working order as soon as is safely possible. If you have any concerns about equipment, please notify staff on site as soon as you can.

We developed industry-leading cleaning and hygiene protocols to help keep our members and employees safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, however, with the reduced risk and in line with the Government’s ending of legal restrictions, we have decided to remove self-cleaning stations in our gyms, which will also support our sustainability objectives by reducing our paper towel waste. We’re proud to say that many of the protocols implemented during lockdown, such as frequent and regular cleaning, and improvements to our air ventilation systems, will continue to be a core part of our TrainSafe Commitment.

Clean,tidy and enough equipment that I didn’t have to wait around to use them. Showers need updating. parking was almost full but not the gyms fault as it’s near Aldi and a restaurant.
