Hired tower scaffolding. Delivery and pick-up went well. One or two components showed sign of wear but it did the job fine and could be erected by one person. Price was good for the project.

Nothing “Speedy” at all!

Placed an order to hire equipment and I had to call to find out when it was going to be delivered. Got given a new order number, put through to Leeds who said they don’t have any in stock and neither does the company.

I’ve had to order through B&Q, which hire the equipment through Speedy Hire. I placed my order on Tuesday and then on Wednesday I was told Friday is the earliest delivery. What happened to the “Speedy” delivery??

I’m now trying to find out what time the 4 hour slot is on Friday but they won’t tell me because they “can’t until the day” which is really inconvenient. I hate being messed around and having my time off work being wasted going backwards and forwards for what really should be a straight forward delivery.

The Leeds branch staff were really pleasant - I cannot fault them, but the general organisation of this company is just shocking.

Good morning,

Thank you for sharing your feedback.
I’m sorry for the frustration caused around your order, particularly the lack of clear updates and the inconvenience this caused with delivery arrangements.

We recognise that having to chase for information and not receiving a confirmed delivery time in advance is frustrating, especially when time off work is involved. This is not the experience we aim to provide, and your comments will be reviewed to help improve our communication and processes.

We do appreciate you highlighting the positive service received from our Leeds branch and will ensure this feedback is shared with the team.

We would like opportunity to look into your order further, please contact us at customerfeedback@speedyhire.com quoting your review, with a reference number of your order and we’ll be happy to assist.

Thank you again for highlighting this, feedback like yours is essential in helping us improve.

They failed to collect their equipment

I hired a turf cutter and rotavator for a weekend from Speedy Hire using B&Q's platform. Speedy Hire delivered the machines with minimal petrol (despite promising that petrol was included) so I had to go to the garage to buy more. When the weekend was over, Speedy Hire didn't collect the equipment on Monday as promised, and didn't even contact me to tell me what was going on. It took a phone call to customer services, then following up with a formal complaint, to get them to pick up the equipment. They left it at my house for more than a week longer than originally promised! What a chaotic, annoying experience.

Good Morning,

I’m sorry to hear about the experience you’ve had with your recent hire, this clearly fell short of the service you should expect from us.

I understand that the turf cutter and rotavator were delivered with minimal fuel, despite being advised that petrol would be included, which meant you had to make additional arrangements yourself. I’m also very concerned by the failure to collect the equipment as agreed, and the lack of communication around this. Leaving the equipment at your property for more than a week beyond the agreed collection date is unacceptable and understandably frustrating.

You shouldn’t have had to chase this through customer services or submit a formal complaint just to have the equipment collected.
The poor communication throughout this process is something I’ll be raising with the relevant teams so it can be properly reviewed.

I’m now looking into this hire using the reference details you’ve provided to understand what went wrong at each stage, including delivery, fuel provision, and the delayed collection to prevent situations like this happening in the future.

I know you mentioned the process of the compliant. However, if you would wish to discuss this matter further please do not hesitate to contact me on the following email address customerfeedback@speedyhire.com

I ordered a floor sander from B&Q

I ordered a floor sander from B&Q, they use Speedy Hire who should have contacted me 24hrs before delivery, which they didnt. I contacted then only to be told my delivery had been put back 2 days. I again contacted Speedy hire and was told the delivery would be made between 0800hrs and 1000hrs, it wasnt, I contacted them again only be told delivery would now be between 1300hrs and 1600hrs, it wasnt. When i contacted them again, I was told they could deliver until 07/04/26. I contacted B&Q and cancelled the order. DONT USE EITHER OF THEM i gave them one star because I couldnt give them ZERO stars.

Hi Michael,

I’m sincerely sorry for the experience you’ve described. The lack of communication ahead of delivery, followed by repeated delays and missed time windows, is completely unacceptable and not the level of service we expect to provide.

I fully understand how frustrating this must have been for you, especially having to chase multiple times only to be given further delays, which ultimately led to you cancelling the order. Please accept my genuine apologies for the inconvenience and wasted time this caused.

I would appreciate the opportunity to investigate what went wrong and ensure this feedback is addressed with the teams involved. If you’re willing, please contact me directly at customerfeedback@speedyhire.com so I can look into this further.

Lack of transparency on charges and…

Lack of transparency on charges and charge you an additional 21£ for pickup that they don’t disclose. It’s deducted from your 100£ refundable deposit.

Edit: Speedy Hire response showcases yet again that they do not take responsibility for their lack of transparancy regarding pricing. Sharing below the breakdown they share when confirming the offer. As you can see, it says 100GBP refundable deposit and a charge for delivery, therefore I find it hard to believe that this clearly describes an additional 21GBP will be removed for returning the machine via their service.

Total Hire Value EX VAT £70.66
Total Speedy Shield £7.07
Fuel Charge £3.80
Delivery £17.50
VAT £19.81
Sub-total £118.84
Refundable deposit £100.00

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for sharing your feedback. I’m sorry for the frustration caused, and I appreciate you raising your concerns around charge transparency.

To clarify, before completing an online order, there is a dropdown section within the checkout journey that states “please note that collection charges apply.” When selected, this explains that the collection charge is applied after the off‑hire process. In addition, customers are required to accept the Terms & Conditions before proceeding, which also outline how collection charges may be applied.

That said, I completely acknowledge that this should be communicated clearly and explicitly, particularly whether a collection charge will be billed separately or deducted from the refundable deposit.

We recognise that this wasn’t made sufficiently clear in your case, and I’m sorry for the confusion this caused.

Your feedback is important in helping us improve how we explain charges during the customer journey.

I’d be very happy to review your hire specifically and ensure everything applied was correct. If you’re willing, please email us at customerexperience@speedyhire.com with your hire details so we can look into this further and address your concerns properly.

We don;t know how much we charge!

Telephoned to ask what the price of hire is for a cement mixer at 4:30pm. Spent last half hour of my working day phoning. I was requested to additionally, go online and set up/create an online account, verifiy with email, QR code to submit drivers licence as proof of ID, completed account form, completed email with ID, Speedy Hire confirm receipt of everything, advisor on phone explains they don't have access to email at their end, emails have to go to a Manager for a Manager to divvy up all the emails between employees for them to even begin looking for a cement mixer. I asked when I could find out A) how much weekly hire is and B) how much delivery charge is for drop-off and collection. Advisor advises someone will email back one day, some day, but unsure which day. I commented that it's hardly 'speedy'. Advisor advises me I've received my first warning for termination of the call altogether. Needless to say, we got the information from a competitor within 3 minutes and hired from them instead. Sort yourselves out please.

A bit of an odd experience with Speedy Hire…

A bit of an odd experience with Speedy Hire, and as they were recommended by B&Q I trusted the B&Q referral which was a mistake. I am going to contact B&Q and complan too as they need to know its impacting B&Q's reputation as well.

Some context on this hire, I went to SH website after B&Q recommended them and ordered an aluminium ladder for a weeks rental. The online order process seemed straightforward and I booked the delivery date for a few weeks out for the order date.

On the date of delivery it got to around 1pm and no emails, messages or confirmation the delivery was on its way so I called the SH support line and was told the Northampton depo was going to deliver it and to call them direct.

I called the Northampton depo and was told the ladder had not been delivered to them and it might be in tomorrow and to call back. I said I have a trade booked in to use the ladder and if it does not arrive they can't do the work and I pre-paid them for the work and can't cancel. The person at the Northampton depo said they would check and call me back that day but no call arrived. The next day I called again at 11am and was told the ladder had just arrived they were waiting for a driver to deliver it to me and would be delivered around 1pm so technically a day and a half lost already from the weeks rental. The Northampton depo said the rental only starts when it arrives not good as my trade can't stay and extra 2 days to make up for the late delivery.

The ladder arrived that day so no real issue well other than I'd lost a day and half on the schedule.

Now this is where the fun and games starts... I paid
Total Hire Value EX VAT £52.84 Total Speedy Shield £5.28 Delivery £25.00 VAT £16.62 Sub-total £99.74 Refundable deposit £86.65 You pay today £186.39

So after the ladder was collected and returned on time now issues I assumed the Refundable deposit £86.65 would be paid back after 3/5 days. I checked and no deposit returned so I called the Northampton depo to be told there was a discrepancy between what the Speedy Hire website had charged me and what they (The depo) charge? I explained what I was charged and was asked to send my web order receipt so the depo could check it. Nothing for a few days so than called again and was assured this would be investigated and resolved. A few days went by no call back or updates so I called again and was told it is being assessed by management and I would hear something soon.

After thinking this is going nowhere I called the Speedy Hire head office and the accounts team I explained what had happened and was assured they would contact the depo and have my deposit returned. Again a few days passed no calls or emails so i called the depo again, similar information its with management and then after three more attempts I was told a payment had been made on the card. 5 days later no refund so I called my credit card company to check and nothing.

After several more attempts of calling Northampton depo and being told the same thing with no refund arriving I had to raise a section 75 claim with the credit card company to get my deposit back.

As an IT architect, I suspect this is an IT logistics issue where the overarching sales system Speedy Hire's website and backend account systems, retail workflow and local depo's systems are not aligned and linked to provide a frictionless service to customers who order via the Speedy Hire website.

What could be a great service is failing due to customer experience, poor IT and business process workflow.

To be honest the amount of time i spent and my hourly IT consultancy rate (4 hours over different days trying to sort this) and trying to get my £86.65 deposit back is probably not worth the aggravation. But I wonder how many customers just walk away without getting their deposits back? And is this even legal?

The team at Northampton who I spoke to on calls where trying their best to sort this but could not, so something is very broken with Speedy Hire. Will I use them again or trust B&Q when that say use and recommend partners, absolutley No!

Good Morning,

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed account of your experience. I’m truly sorry for the inconvenience, frustration, and unnecessary time you had to spend trying to resolve what should have been a simple hire and refund process.

This is far from the level of service we aim to provide.
Your feedback highlights several areas where we clearly fell short:

Delays and lack of communication around the initial delivery
Conflicting information between our online order system and the Northampton depot
Repeated follow-up required on your part to obtain your refundable deposit
No clear escalation or timely resolution, despite multiple attempts.

I completely understand how this impacted your plans, especially after arranging tradespeople and pre-paying for work. Losing that time is unacceptable, and you were right to expect a smoother, more joined‑up experience.

Regarding the deposit: you should never have been left to chase multiple teams, nor had to resort to a Section 75 claim to recover funds that should have been returned promptly and transparently. I appreciate your persistence, and I’m very sorry for the additional stress this created.

You also raised valid concerns about the alignment between our website, depot systems, and internal workflows. Your observations as an IT architect are insightful, and I want to assure you that we are actively reviewing the way online orders integrate with our depot operations. Feedback like yours helps us identify where these processes break down so we can fix them properly.

I’m glad you found the Northampton team helpful when you spoke with them, but I agree that the system shouldn’t have left them unable to resolve your issue.

While I know this doesn’t undo the inconvenience you experienced, I want to once again offer my sincere apologies for what happened.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience. We truly value your feedback and are committed to learning from it and improving.

if you have any further details or request you would like to share, please do not hesitate to get in touch via customerfeedback@speedyhire.com

Terrible

Terrible, absolutely terrible. The West London branch is one of the worst depots I’ve had to deal with. I can never get hold of anyone and end up being left on hold for over 10 minutes.

When equipment is due to be collected, there’s never a clear ETA, and even when a date is provided, it’s rarely followed through. As a result, the lads on site are left waiting and working overtime unnecessarily.

In contrast, the Kings Cross depot has been extremely helpful especially Matt, who has gone out of his way to arrange off-hiring equipment, even from other depots. Going forward, I’ll be avoiding the West London depot and contacting Kings Cross instead, as they’ve proven far more reliable for handling off-hires in the NW London area.

Industrial Vacuum Cleaner Hire

We hired an industrial vacuum cleaner to clean our new property. The customer service provided by Zoe and Ed in the Eastleigh office was really outstanding. They went above and beyond to provide advice and to make sure we were able to take delivery of the vacuum after we failed to get it into our car. Their help was really appreciated.

Never delivered such a let down…

Twice now I’ve ordered and speedy have not delivered what I’ve hired.
They’ve not kept in touch although their email says they will.
I ordered through 3 separate companies who use speedy to deliver (if I’d known after the first company I wouldn’t have ordered from anymore that use this company).
They just do not respond, nor deliver! So much for being “speedy” avoid avoid avoid. Wasted so much time and money!

excellent all round

I can only repeat what i said on another review site;
I know times have changed since the days I used hire centres regularly, but I was really taken aback by the customer service I received. The staff acted in a very professional way while at the same time being helpful, informative and cheerful.
The whole experience, from wording on the Internet through collection and return was a pleasure.
While queuing I saw that your staff were treating everybody the same, nothing was too much trouble.
Equipment was in good condition and a reasonable price.
Well done Speedy!

Hired a compactor

Hired a compactor. Delivery driver turned up with no trolley, so ended up dragging and scraping the machine across my path creating rust marks all the way into my side alley. Machine instructions were printed so faint I couldn’t read them, so had no idea what I was doing with the machine. Exhaust deflector was missing so the petrol fumes just blew onto me the whole time meaning I could not breathe and had to take breaks due to light headedness. Machine broke down. It was also creating excessive smoke from the off as well. Also it’s not very clear what off hire means etc. would be good if you could just book a delivery and collection at the same time. Bad and confusing experience. Still waiting for a refund. Submitted video evidence of machine turning off after a few seconds and deflector plate missing. Once it got it picked up, after speaking to customer service, they arranged another pickup a week later, so they had no idea the machine had already been picked up. A lot needs fixing, don’t think I’d use them again unless I had no alternative.

Rip off

Ordered a Genie Lift for one day also paid £25 delivery fee, following day no one appeared for collecting it, phoned up and was told they would pick it up next day. Rang up to get my £200 deposit back only for them to try and charge for an extra days hire sorted that out then they charged £30 for it to be collected. Never had to pay two lots for fees for collection and delivery always classed it as one transaction. I also found it very strange it was £25 to delivery and £30 to pick it up. Now deleted my trade account with them

Avoid at all cost!!!

the delivery was later than expected so had to pay guys on site to stay longer, they put on the invoice I had a £100 refundable deposit but don’t make it very clear that they take a collection fee out of that so you don’t get your full deposit back. Also if you don’t ring and ask for your deposit to be refunded they will keep it, I was told it’s because they don’t store your card details, so if you are unlucky enough you do have to use speedy hire then make sure you call up for your deposit back!!!!
The staff were very unhelpful too saying that is basically the way it works.

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

I’m really sorry to hear that the petrol compactor plate didn’t run properly and that you struggled to get support over the weekend. This understandably caused frustration, especially with limited time to complete your job.

Upon further investigation, the depot has notified me that a resolution was made and you have extended your hire.
However, the overall experience fell short of the standard we aim to provide.

We’ll be reviewing this with both our customer service and depot teams to make sure situations like this are handled more effectively in future.
