We had to use an emergency vet last weekend and were directed to Vets Now Portsmouth. Luckily they seemed fairly quiet and we only waited about 10 mins for our dog to be seen. The vet was so kind and very gentle with Bucca who had decided to retrieve and eat a chicken leg bone from the beach. Part of the bone had broken off and was stuck at the back of her mouth. What we had spent some in trying to even locate, the vet whipped out in seconds. We were so relieved and highly recommend the kind and skilled vet- thankyou.

Vet's Now Hilsea

Our dog was sent to Vets Now, Hilsea from her local practice. She was being treated for a severe bout of vomiting and diarrhoea. Our dog is female, 13 yo and undergoing tests for Cushing’s disease which makes her extremely tired, anxious and clingy. We weren’t happy that she was being transferred for the weekend to an unfamiliar facility but felt she had to go to receive the ongoing treatment she needed. She had been improving at her own vet and we expected that to continue.
When I called the Vets Now vet for an update it felt like something was ‘off’. The vet had an aggressive tone and told us our dog was not eating, was crying constantly, and was in extreme pain. Consequently she was put on a high dose of morphine. I explained our dog relied on me and was probably very anxious. My comment was immediately dismissed as, “irrelevant to our dogs situation”.
The vet then introduced the topic of euthanasia. We were horrified, one minute our dog was improving, now they were going to kill her. After a sleepless night, hubby and I decided if she was that bad we wanted her home where she could be transitioned with dignity. We called the vet; told them we were coming to pick her up and set off for the Vets Now facility. When we got there we were made to wait while everybody else was seen. Finally we were called into the consulting room to discuss our dog’s condition. We said we’d come to take her home and the vet said we couldn’t. She was again, very aggressive and threatened us with ‘consequences’ if we took our dog. My husband asked her to specify exactly what the consequences would be, and she doubled down on the fact our dog couldn’t be moved as she was now on intravenous ketamine. Ketamine is an extremely powerful drug that's generally used to knock out horses. We didn’t know what to do so the vet offered to bring our dog out so we could see her.
She was brought out in a lovely fluffy blanket, and we were left alone. She tried to get up but when she couldn’t I offered her a treat from my pocket, she wolfed it down. This is the dog that we were told wasn’t eating. We spent some time with her and left feeling very uneasy but didn’t feel we could do anything else following the threats from the vet.
At 7am the next morning we get a call from Vets Now saying although dogs would normally be returned to their own practice Monday morning, our dog would be better staying where she was. At 8am we get a call to make arrangements for our dog to transferred back to her regular practice. Although that was confusing, we were happy. We have a good relationship with our vet and knew they would understand our wish for our dog to transition at home.
So we arrive to pick our dog up and miracle of miracles, she’s walked out, a little unsteady, but upright on her feet. However this 13 yo dog who only hours earlier was at death’s door, has had extreme sickness and diarrhoea and hasn't eaten solid food for the past three days, and was extremely dehydrated was MUZZLED!! Can you believe that? Tottering out on her dodgy ketamine filled legs with the humiliation and degradation of a muzzle!
Hubby and I were repeatedly lied to then threatened at Vets Now, Hilsea. We don’t know what was done to our dog but fortunately she’s improving again now she’s no longer under their care.

I’ve come back to amend this review because this company is now chasing us for a payment that we’ve already made and want 25% of our insurance claim for filling out a form. I don’t mind paying an admin fee but it should be a set charge. I also didn’t mention earlier that our savage monster beast of a dog weighs 7lbs.

Out of hours vet experience

Both my visits to the vets was a easy experience, with helpful and thoughtful receptionists.
The vets were quick to see my dog, examine him and explain what they thought was wrong with him and what treatment they could offer -a very reassuring experience- A big thank you to both vets

Patronising and abrupt vet!

I've given three stars on the basis that our dog was seen very promptly and the receptionist was lovely.

We took our dog to the vet following her first seizure so to say we were worried is an understatement,
The vet we saw had a very abrupt almost uncaring attitude and seemed more interested in showing us harnesses that she thought we should buy from a website/company we'd never heard of. She also made quite a big issue about our dog being overweight and said she needed to lose a kg which then went to 1.5kg and then said "if people say she's skinny she's the right weight".

Had she been going for a regular check up then I probably wouldn't have minded but when you are paying £350, I don't expect to hear things like "that's an awful harness - mind you, you aren't to know".

To be clear my dog spends a lot of time in and out of the vets as she receives immunotherapy, so is regularly weighed and has been wearning the same harness for two years. At no point has any vet ever said she needs to lose weight, nor have they ever commented about her harness.

Maybe it's me but when I see a vet for my dogs I want to feel that they genuinely care for animals. This vet didn't give me that impression at all and seemed more interested in making unhelpful comments, completely unrelated to the purpose of our visit.
