Don't bother - you get what you pay for
It seems that most reviews for this company are based purely on the cost of the policy and not actual experiences of using them for a breakdown but as with any policy, you'll never really know how good it is until you have to use it.
I had the misfortune to deal with RMC for the first time when my wife's car broke down at home just before Christmas.
The nature of the problem meant that the car needed to be recovered to our local and trusted garage which happened to be 1.75 miles further out than the 10 mile max distance allows for in the policy which, although I fully accepted that the extra distance, small as it is would have to be paid for, I wasn't prepared for the eye watering sum they wanted to cover it - £9.80!!
In my honest opinion, this is an outrageous figure for less than 2 miles but my biggest gripe is how they arrived at that figure. The call handler couldn't answer how the cost had been calculated and I was refused point blank to speak to a manager about this too as apparently they would only tell me the same thing. Either way, it was pay the cost or don't have the car recovered so, left with no choice, I paid and a complaint was raised.
Even having had a formal response to my complaint, RMC's response was to simply point me in the direction of their policy wording that states they can charge for recovery beyond the 10 mile radius allowed for recovery to a local garage. That part I don't disagree with but I did ask them to point out where specifically the mileage rate is specified or calculated and I was given a woolly response of it being calculated based on a number of factors (basically they can charge what they want and there's nothing I can do about it.) They promptly closed the complaint as their 'final response'
I am still none-the-wiser about how their excess mileage charges are calculated but this is a classic case in my opinion of you get what you pay for (the policy only cost somewhere in the region of £20 or so) and I wouldn't touch RMC again based on this experience.
For me and my wife, it's lesson learned and we'll be sticking to the well-known and trusted breakdown companies in the future.
