Great price, unfortunately they did provide the wrong address and phone number for pick up which is a huge problem for people coming from airport.

Some rental agencies are not supplying…

Some rental agencies are not supplying the correct up to date information on how to find their offices or shuttle services at airports. Particularly Interrent at Rome Fiumicino, who did not even answer their phone. This resulted in my being delayed by more than one hour recently and I only got a shuttle after calling King Parking as I knew where they were located. I believe that AutoEurope should follow up regularly on this type of information as it misleads their customers and relects badly on the company

AutoEurope Review - June 2018

We booked a two-week dual-centre farmhouse holiday in Tuscany. We had targeted a number of key areas to visit during our stay so a good, reliable hire car was a must.

We looked at the market, checked the various review sites and decided to book a Renault Megane Sport Estate with AutoEurope at Pisa Airport. This turned out to be a very costly mistake.

When we arrived at Pisa airport, we reported to the car hire company and were met with a very helpful colleague. She took care of the paperwork and directed us to the shuttle to enable us to collect the car. So far, so good.

When we arrived at the car collection compound, we were greeted by an operative called Walter. It was then that we found that the car we had booked had been 'replaced' by an Opel Astra 1.6 CDTI with 39,000 KM on the clock and 13 noted damage points around the vehicle. Closer inspection at handover revealed that some 'damage points' that had been recorded and clearly charged for against previous hirers were not evident. Alarm bells rang and I took a series of detailed photos of the vehicle before we set off.

The car performed well during our vacation. We drove back to Pisa on 20 June 2018. We stopped off at the Esso Service Station at Castagnolo to refill the vehicle with Diesel. This service station is 7.5 KM from the car hire return point. So far, so good. We took a series of final family photos at this point before packing our mobiles away for the journey home.

When we arrived at the car drop off point, we were again met by 'Walter'. We had unpacked the car at the departure terminal and were focussed on getting the car checked back in to enable us to transfer back to the departure lounge. As we checked the interior of the car to ensure we hadn't left and last-minute belongings, Walter checked the exterior of the car.

And then 'Walter' dropped the bombshell. He called us to where he was standing at the front offside of the car and pointed to the tyre. The offside front tyre had a slice cut in to the sidewall. Walter explained that this rendered the car unusable and that we would have to pay for a replacement tyre. He then went on to explain that the cost (less the excess) could be taken from our insurance.

I examined the damage. It looked like a stanley knife blade or similar had been used to damage the sidewall... Walter was aware that we were on a tight schedule and, whilst we were unhappy about the damage, we agreed to pay the €275 (yes, €275) bill to replace the tyre. Note, a 1.6 Astra Tyre costs around €80 to replace.

We arrived home quite late and I started to download the photos that we had taken through the holiday. The last set of photos was taken at the Esso Service Station at Castagnolo which was, as I mentioned above, located only 7.5 KM miles from the drop off point.

And guess what, three of the shots taken there clearly show that the offside front tyre was, at that point, completely undamaged. There were NO signs of any issues with the tyre or the wheel or in fact, any part of the offside of the car.

The journey from the Esso petrol garage to the vehicle return point was completely uneventful. You don't have to be a genius to see what has taken place however, as with other reported issues against AutoEurope, we were simply not in a position to disprove the claim made by Walter on behalf of AutoEurope.

So here are the learning points to anyone considering hiring a car in Europe.

1 - Do NOT make your car hire selection using price as the key selection criteria;
2 - BEFORE you drive your car away, take a 360-degree series of photos of the vehicle and have them independently witnessed, preferably, by the car hire agent themselves;
3 - IMMEDIATELY BEFORE YOU RETURN YOUR VEHICLE, take a further 360-degree series of photos of the vehicle and have them independently witnessed, preferably, by the car hire agent themselves

If, when you return the car, you are confronted by claims for damage that simply has not taken place, get the operatives name and contact details and report the incident to the local police, to the car hire company itself and to the booking agency that you used to hire the car.

It also goes without saying that we will never, ever use AutoEurope again. Instead, we will pay the extra and use a reputable car hire company for all future holidays.

I strongly suggest that you do the same!
