Loyal 20-year customer – insurance denied due to hidden clause
I have been using Auto Europe for over 20 years for both business and private travel worldwide, and I never had issues before. That’s why this experience is particularly disappointing.
For a recent rental (19–21 March 2026), I booked a car including “full protection” insurance via Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH. My return time was 21:00, while the rental office closed at 18:00. This was clearly stated in the booking and known in advance.
As instructed, I returned the car after hours, parked it at the rental location, and dropped the keys in the designated drop box.
The next day, the rental company reported damage to the left headlight (likely caused by a stone). I paid for the damage and submitted a claim under the “full protection” insurance.
Auto Europe rejected the claim based on a clause stating that damages identified after an out-of-hours return are not covered.
The issue is not just the clause itself, but the fact that:
* They knew in advance I would return the car after closing time
* This is a standard and common procedure
* At no point was I clearly warned that this would invalidate the insurance
In practice, this means I was sold insurance that did not cover my actual rental conditions.
After 20 years of loyalty, I expected better transparency and fairness. I am currently escalating this through the European Consumer Centre.
I hope Auto Europe reconsiders its position and improves how these important limitations are communicated to customers.
**Update (resolved):**
Following my initial review, I’m pleased to share that Auto Europe Deutschland GmbH has reconsidered my case after further escalation.
They have now agreed to refund the full amount, which I appreciate.
While the initial handling of the claim was disappointing—especially given the lack of clear communication about the after-hours return clause—I do value that Auto Europe ultimately took responsibility and reached a fair resolution.
Thank you to their team for reviewing the case again.
I hope this also helps improve transparency for future customers regarding important insurance exclusions.
No Car, No Refund
I booked a reservation at the Bari airport, which was assigned to EuropCar and when I went to the counter they did not give me my car that I rented. Auto Europe refused to refund me my reservation as they said it was prepaid.
Not helpfully when you need them p. Useless
Booked a car with Goldcar in Alicante. I left Euro 152. For fuel deposit with Goldcar. They were supposed to refund my money the next day but it has been one month and I have not. Paid a lot to call Gold car and Auto Europe with no result. Not helpful at all.
Avoid booking with Auto Europe and Gold car.
I rented a car from Goldcar through…
I rented a car from Goldcar through Auto Europe. Paid extra for insurance. At the counter, they asked 153 euro for deposit of fuel. I paid with my debit card and return the car with a full tank but I am not receiving my deposit back.
O can not reach anyone at Auto europe. The phone number is fake. Everyone should avoid booking through them and just book directly from the rental car.
Scammers!!!
Scammers!!!! We booked and paid for a rental, and within 20 minutes we received a call saying they don’t accept Revolut for the deposit. That’s strange, considering we had already paid for the rental and I’ve recently rented with Sixt using Revolut with zero issues. Their customer service rep even claimed that no rental company accepts Revolut, which is simply not true.
They told us the rental was “not possible” and advised us to cancel the reservation, assuring us we would get a refund. Now they’ve completely changed their story and are saying we needed to cancel 48 hours in advance to be eligible for a refund, even though we booked and paid for the rental for the next day. Make that make sense.
They are now saying there is no way to get our money back at all. This is complete nonsense and blatantly scamming. Avoid at all costs.
Auto europe does not refund in force majeure
Auto europe does not refund, never book with this platform, rediculous! They cant help with a refund for force majeure due to bad weather causing a flight cancelation. While Airline, and hotels refund, auto Europe keeps the fund while the rental company charges nothing or a no show fee which is max 95 euro. Auto europe keeps the rest. Call centre is rude and cannot help, they cant help and ask me not to even call rental company. They are therefor not providing the service they claim on the website.
Very Poor Service and Misleading Website
I am extremely dissatisfied with my experience using this car rental site. Here are the main problems:
Lack of Service: Customer support was almost nonexistent. When I needed help, responses were slow and unhelpful. It felt like there was no real effort to resolve issues.
Misleading Website: The information on the site was inaccurate. The car shown during booking was not the car I received. Important details about fees and conditions were hidden or unclear.
I would not recommend this service. Transparency and reliable support should be basic standards, and this company failed on both.
EasyTerra / Auto Europe is a scam…
EasyTerra / Auto Europe is a scam company that keeps your money when the car rental provider refuses to give you the car at pickup. It’s pure theft. Their customer service is ineffective — every time you contact them, you have to explain your case all over again to a different employee. To this day, they still haven’t provided any refund. Imagine: you pay for a car, the car isn’t delivered, and the broker simply keeps your money without ever having done anything! I honestly can’t believe companies like EasyTerra and Auto Europe still exist — they should be banned. I am even considering filing a police report against this bunch of thieves.
My advice is to choose a reputable company instead. After my booking was refused, I went back to the airport and rented from Alamo — slightly more expensive, but far more reliable. Potential customers should avoid EasyTerra and Auto Europe at all costs. Don’t make the same mistake I did by going for the cheapest offer — you’ll regret it.

Do not trust Auto Europe
Aparently you are not aware of the exchange of opinions I had with Carlos Fidalgo. Please contact him and look at our correspondence. In view of what Carlos told me, your apologies seem far from sincere. Cees Withagen
Cees Through Auto Europe I rented a car at AVIS Overtoom Amsterdam. Return time 14.00 hrs on April 21. This was confirmed by Auto Europe in my contract with them. When I picked up the car on April 17, AVIS employees informed me that the garage would close on April 21 at noon. After that time I would have to bear all parking and other costs, possibly amounting to € 100. I decided to return the car before noon, leaving early and missing two workshops. Auto Europe refuses to apologize, let alone compensate. If you do not believe me, try for yourself and book through Auto Europe a car from AVIS for Pentecost returning the car on June 9. Auto Europe does not inform you that AVIS is closed at noon of June 9.

Dishonest and misleading crooks!
I booked a one way car rental and the extra for the one way part was advertised as 130€.
Afterwards came the confirmation email confirming this amount.
Then the next day they sent me an email stating that the one way rental part was not 130€ but in fact 220€. This to me, was not acceptable, 90€ more!
I asked them to keep to their original price. They would not. They told me insteat, that I should take the rental as it is and then re-claim the extra amount after the rental. I had to keep the receipts for this.
It turns out, as I really wanted to be sure on this and questioned this, that they will not reimburse me for this amount.
What is worse is that their website still shows this incorrect amount over a week later. I pointed it out to them right at the beginning but they still have the 130€ as a one way fee.
Totally dishonest. Not what I expect from a well known big company.
