Charged for Premium on a "Basic" account – Refund refused

I am extremely disappointed with Blinkist’s predatory renewal practices and lack of accountability. I was recently charged for an annual Premium renewal despite the fact that my account dashboard explicitly listed my status as "Basic" (the free tier).

The situation is as follows:

Account Status Mismatch: Inside the Blinkist app, my account status is explicitly listed as "Basic" (the free tier). Because the UI showed I was a Basic user, there was no "Cancel Subscription" option available to me. I had no way to stop a renewal that the system claimed didn't exist. I haven't used the app in months and would have canceled long ago if the interface had accurately reflected my status.

Missing from Apple Subscriptions: I checked my Apple ID subscription list, and Blinkist is not listed there either. Between the app UI and the App Store, the subscription was effectively invisible.

Despite this, Blinkist charged me and then refused a refund because I am "not a new customer." This is not about a refund policy; it is about a systemic failure that prevented me from exercising my right to cancel. You cannot charge a user for a service while simultaneously showing them they are on a free tier with no way to opt-out.

Blinkist’s support team is ignoring the fact that their own interface made it impossible to manage this account.

Advice to others: Do not rely on your account status or your Apple subscription list to tell you the truth. Blinkist may still charge you even if they claim you are a "Basic" member.

Be aware that this app automatically renews your subscription annually, and customer support does not offer refunds. I strongly advise against downloading it, as this billing practice feels deceptive to users.

I contacted Blinkist support simply to…

I contacted Blinkist support simply to cancel my subscription after receiving their renewal reminder. Instead of just processing the cancellation, they asked me for screenshots of my subscription status, login details, and payment confirmation, even though I was writing from the same email address and provided the receipt details.

After I sent the requested screenshots, another support agent replied as if they could not even understand the context of the ticket and asked me how they could help. I had already clearly stated that I wanted to cancel my subscription.

To make it worse, I later received another automated message saying they had not received an update from me, despite me already replying multiple times.

This is exactly the kind of support experience that makes a simple cancellation feel unnecessarily difficult. Very poor handling, bad internal ticket management, and a frustrating waste of time.

Predatory auto renewal without notice

Predatory auto renewal without prior notice. Emailed within minutes of the charge and offered premium features for a year or partial refund. For a product I don’t use, neither are sufficient.

Predatory Auto-Renewal, Partial Refund Only

I was charged for an auto-renewed subscription and contacted support within 10 minutes - yet a full refund was refused.

They only returned 50%, hiding behind terms that conveniently allow auto-renewal by default and effectively block refunds.

This feels less like a fair policy and more like a trap designed to extract money from users who don’t catch the renewal in time. Disappointing experience.

I had a syncing problem occurring…

I had a syncing problem occurring between my lap top & iPhone. Blankist AI Fin, was honestly the most effective and human AI experience I have ever had in a customer service capacity. I eventually got frustrated, but Fin escalated my problem to a human who was able to completely followup with me and remedy my situation.
Now I am able to enjoy on either device the world of Blankist, which as we all know opens up so many interesting ideas into my life. Completely worth the subscription price and intelligent AI and human back up for when things go awry. Highly recommended.
