"Oopsies-we binned your placenta.."

I have stored my first son's placenta and cord with them in 2022, excellent service was provided.
We have had our second one this year July and wanted to store cord tissue, blood and placenta. We have opted for the platinum package + PLACENTA ADD ON. This was agreed via initial email, was mentioned on the notes of the consent form as well, and we have also agreed to placenta collection on the consent form. Additionally, the lovely phlebotomist also checked with us that we opted for all 3, so we have had no suspicion that they weren't going process the consent form properly and bin my placenta. Which was followed by an "oopsies, it's your fault.." email. Once we received the invoice only charging for cord tissue and blood we rang them and left an urgent voicemail. We didn't receive a call back for a week, we have had to call them to see if they are still trading as there was nothing, but radio silence. An organ that belongs to me has been discarded of, not to mention that my son will not have another placenta and their response to that is beyond nonchalant. We have received an email from one of their team members stating "I appreciate this may not have been the outcome you were expecting.." acting like it is no biggie. Since 2022 their prices have skyrocketed and their services has plummeted. shocking for a company that deals with processing other people's organs. Parents do this to take care of their children in case something happens to their health and this opportunity never comes back. Choose a company that will care about what matters to you and in this industry for the right reason, not just taking money and discarding organs.

I want to help you understand what happened whilst acknowledging that no explanation can undo the distress this has caused.

We understand that based on your initial email correspondence and the conversation with the phlebotomist, you expected the placenta to be stored. However, the final, legally-binding service agreement that we received did not specify placenta.

As an organisation licensed by the Human Tissue Authority (HTA), we must strictly follow the services specified in the final consent documentation. This regulatory requirement ensures patient safety and consent protocols are upheld. The service agreement we received, and which we are bound by law to follow, was for the Platinum service (cord blood and tissue) only. While a note was present, it only outlined the price if you chose to store placenta; it did not constitute formal consent for the storage service itself under the regulations we must adhere to.

The phlebotomist’s protocol instructs them to collect the placenta as standard. This is a backup precaution in case there is a problem storing the other samples. If the need to use the placenta as backup ever occurs, we would still need to contact you to obtain consent to process it. We can see how this part of the process would have reinforced your expectations, and we are very sorry for the confusion and false assurance this caused.

Regarding your attempts to contact us, I am concerned to hear you experienced difficulty reaching us. Our system records all incoming calls and voicemails, and I have thoroughly checked our logs. We show no record of any attempted contact until the day your partner spoke to a member of our team. Had we received communication from you, we would have responded in the timely manner you would expect.

I understand that this explanation does not change the painful outcome. The opportunity to store your son’s placenta has been missed, and we are deeply sorry for the anguish this has caused you and your family. Our intention in explaining the regulatory constraints is not to dismiss your experience, but to be transparent about the procedures we are legally required to follow.

Memorable experience

I had the pleasure of being assisted by this company to store the cord, blood, and placenta of my newborn baby.

The customer service was exceptional, especially from Madame Verity Moses, Stem Cell Banking Advisor, and Mr. Oliver Margry, Customer Service Executive. They were both extremely professional, kind, and understanding.

Thanks to their support, what could have been a stressful experience was transformed into a smooth and pleasant one. I’m truly grateful for their guidance and dedication throughout the process.

Dubious claims

I called them to ask a couple of questions. During the call the sales person mentioned that stem cells can help "cure" autism. I was surprised to have never heard of this medical revolution so I asked more questions, such as pointers to any peer-reviewed papers that would give evidence to such a claim but alas, they couldn't. They pointed me to their own website which refers to studies done on the subject. However, the studies finished in 2017 and were inconclusive. I think it's unethical to sell services with dubious health benefits, banking on the fears of prospective parents. They promised me to send me the papers. They have sent a very thorough answer, however, the link between stem cells and effective treatments is incredibly weak with many inconclusive studies.

Needless to say that we're going with a competitor.

Responsive employees

The company personnel were quick to respond. However, our experience with the phlebotomist was not great as he did not wait/return to take the mother's blood sample and we had to arrange the collection of the mother's blood sample separately, which was a task we could have done without given that we had a newborn and the mother was recovering from a C-section.

Constant harassment & cold calling...

We signed up to ask for further information as we were generally interested.. until we saw the cost, which we simply cannot afford.

I have since been harassed by the company, calling several times a week for 5 months now, since last October. Almost 50 phone calls received in that time!!! This includes via mobile phone numbers too. I have since unsubscribed and blocked the numbers but they keep calling.
Utter harassment!!

**In response to your comment below, I assure you I counted all received missed calls before leaving the above review. 47 attempts to call me to be exact, since last October!! Each time, it comes up saying Cells4Life - your company, not another company. I understand you may wish to contact customers to provide further information, but this sheer volume of calls is harassment. From reading other reviews, I can see I am not the only victim of harassment/cold calling from your company.

Storing your baby's stem cells is a big decision and our intention in following up is to provide information and help potential customers with any questions they may have, so when someone makes an enquiry for more information we will attempt to reach them via phone or email to assist them with this.

However, we do not engage in cold calling, and have never called any potential client at the volume that you describe. When asked, or informed by someone that they are no longer interested, we always close the enquiry and do not make any further attempts at contact. From what you describe, it sounds like you may have been receiving calls from a different company?

What a great service

Very easy to arrange, very straightforward, everything was very well coordinated and went well. The phlebotomist was really good even with the short notice and the change of plan in my delivery.

Unreliable - Cells4Life and their partners

I underwent a C-section, during which the umbilical cord snapped from the placenta. The phlebotomist only collected a small viable amount of cord blood, resulting in a failed sample.

The phlebotomist demonstrated unprofessional conduct and failed to follow basic hygiene protocols, leading me to believe their work in retrieving the blood would as well be substandard. After communication with Cells4Life, it appears the phlebotomist’s company proposed corrective actions to address performance gaps, further highlighting the phlebotomist's incompetence for this task. Although I received a refund for the phlebotomist’s service, my complaint remains unanswered.

Cells4Life conducted an investigation into the phlebotomist’s actions and verbally agreed to waive their fee, but they never provided this in writing nor responded to any further communications. To this day, I still don’t know what happened to my blood sample—was it stored or disposed of without my consent? Additionally, after reading the Cells4Life instruction letter to doctors, I noticed it was incomplete, lacking the protocol for cord detachment/tear. I raised a complaint with them, but again, there was no response.

Collecting and storing blood cells is an irreversible process, and the lack of accountability and response from both parties is deeply concerning.
