I was paying a substantial deposit to a builder so he could start some work for me, it took them 13 days (9 working days) to pass the money onto the builder! This delayed work starting for almost two weeks!
My builder sent me screenshots throughout the process and I trust him completely. He had gone through a validation process with them before I made the payment, but they made him go through a second one, then I went though a validation. Which is fine, I get that they have to ensure there isn't any money laundering going on etc however even after both myself and my builder had passed the checks my builder did not receive the money for a further 4 workings days. I have emailed with my complaint and asked for an explanation as to why there was a delay and they replied with an inadequate apology and no explanation. I personally will not be using them again as it caused me stress and a long delay.

My account also shut down for no reason after 3 months of setting up integrations. Not a viable way to run a business on either side. Shame really, the product itself had some promise.
Edit: Thanks for the boilerplate reply GC. I understand the need for anti money laundering, however I am not laundering money so this shouldn’t be an issue. I have all documentation needed to pass any verification had you asked for it, but you never did. I can only assume if I failed, it must be due to some widespread error in your processes. Unfortunately there was no warning or opportunity to appeal. What do you have to say for yourselves?

We had a deeply disappointing experience with GoCardless. After submitting all requested documentation, our account was suddenly restricted without explanation. We still have no clarity on the status of our customer payments, which is unacceptable. We integrated GoCardless with Xero expecting a seamless solution, but instead encountered confusion, poor communication, and disruption to our operations. I strongly advise others to steer clear of this service.

I’m a freelance software developer in the process of establishing my business. After research and recommendations (both from Google and word of mouth), I chose GoCardless because they appeared to support the kind of payment structures I needed — monthly retainers and one-off development payments — including the ability to set up direct debit orders with clients in different countries.
I registered, submitted all required legal documents, completed the verification process, and was under the impression everything was ready to go. I raised my first debit order for a client overseas, they made the payment, and the very next day I received an email saying my account had been closed and was under review.
From there, everything went downhill.
Communication was only via email, with responses taking 2–3 days.
Every reply contained the same vague statement — no explanation of why the review was initiated, no guidance on what might have caused it, and no help in resolving the matter.
My client had already paid, yet GoCardless offered no assistance with the payment.
This raises serious questions: Why are new customers not taken through proper checks before allowing transactions, to avoid sudden closures? Why the lack of transparency or willingness to help?
For a company that markets itself as business-friendly, the experience was the opposite. They have been unhelpful, opaque, and slow to respond. I would strongly discourage other freelancers and small businesses from using GoCardless. Thankfully, I discovered this before integrating their service into client workflows — if this happened mid-project, it could have caused serious damage to my reputation.
There are other providers out there who are more accommodating, transparent, and supportive of potential clients. I will be using them moving forward.

Kicked out during the onboarding process: received a list of things to answer, I didn't even have time to answer them that I received an account closure notification from their "Account Review Team". Was suggested by a support agent to make an appeal which was an additional WASTE OF TIME! This is the old (financial) world where the suppliers pick their customers, in the new world: the customers get to pick their supplier (and this is what I am going to do: bring my business somewhere else!). ZERO STAR for a WASTE OF TIME! I can't wait for them to go bankrupt just like Intergiro in Sweden did: they were exactly like THEM! They hide behind their FSA regulations: a good shield to use your regulator, go in bed with them.

Trash company, go to get nickel it’s a better service and free. Go Cardless has the worst support. The interface is lacking, the tools lack, there’s really no reason for them to exist as a platform. So many better choices. Oh also. They like to “review” accounts and close them randomly. They closed one account for “checks” they couldn’t disclose (truly don’t care found a better service at get nickel) they left my other account open (Different Business) I’m going to go ahead and close that my self.
They impose stupid limits on accounts, 5k per transaction by default. Ask them to raise it and you get instantly denied with a bullshit auto email telling you to contact support if you “really” need more.
This thing has 90s PayPal vibes. Don’t walk away RUN!

All good during the free trial. Issues start when they charged me for their service: twice I was charged a way more than I should have. This has been brought up to their attention. No responses yet. I am appalled and disgusted by their service. Just stealing people money really. Not worth the hassle.

Their website violates GDPR regulations by using dark patterns to try to force users to accept tracking cookies. The option to reject cookies is hidden, and the consent boxes are pre-ticked. Not cool.
