Car Purchase on Auction site

I wasn't advised prior to purchase that they had no log book for the vehicle and after some lengthy discussions they then agreed to refund me the cost of apply for a new log book but lucky for them I have friends in the post office and got it sorted for free

Thank you for your comments. The absence of the V5 logbook was clearly stated in the vehicle’s description at the time of sale. However, when you raised the matter, we offered as a goodwill gesture to cover the cost of applying for a replacement, despite this being the buyer’s responsibility under auction terms. We’re pleased to hear you were able to resolve it quickly and at no cost.

Hampson Auctions always strives to act fairly, transparently, and in good faith with all clients.

Don't bother, save your money

We collected our car after it did not sell - fact. The highest offer was nowhere near the reserve even though we were told it would easily sell; luckily we placed a reserve. When we got it back, we noticed immediately that the car had been driven by the company for 46 miles without our permission. So I complained as we can prove the mileage - we had their photo of it in storage; and then our photo on collecting the car. They did not deny this and their email answer was that they took it to a showcase, that I agreed to the car going there, and if I didn't want my car driven there, I should have emailed them to say that!  We dispute this as we were told the car would never be driven and would always be transported.
The reason why we were collecting our car was because we no longer trusted them. We had an extra fee sprung on us - £210 to transport the car back to their storage unit, 12 miles away, after the auction, even though we had asked our salesperson if there was any more fees and got told 'no' only 48 hours earlier.
Anyway, I disputed this transport fee but their manager wasn't interested and sent me an email which I found offensive and threatening - fact.
My advice is, save your money, look at the actual prices they achieve, and remember you can get a lot of classified car ads on Ebay for the money you would pay to them in fees; I calculated we could have had over 2 year's worth of advertising for our car.

I had the serious misfortune of dealing…

I had the serious misfortune of dealing with Hampsons Auction after being contacted by someone from this company shortly after listing my car on eBay. He confidently claimed that their auction house specialized in vehicles like mine and that they had a dedicated customer base ready to pay a premium for it. Over a few conversations, he built up trust and ultimately convinced me to list my car through their auction process.

After delivering my car to their storage facility and meeting the representative in person, I was pressured during the paperwork stage regarding the reserve price. I very clearly expressed my desire to set a minimum reserve of £12,000, which was already significantly lower than similar cars selling for £17,000–£20,000. However, the salesman was extremely pushy and adamant that setting a reserve would discourage buyers. He repeatedly guaranteed the car would not sell for less than £12,000 and assured me he knew what he was doing.

Well, guess what? My car sold for a disgraceful £5,500. I was absolutely furious—and instead of accountability, I was met with narcissistic deflection. Suddenly, James insisted I chose not to put a reserve on the car, despite the fact that he manipulated me out of doing so through high-pressure tactics and false promises. Classic blame-shifting.

To make matters worse, when I left a negative review online, I was forced to delete it and now they keep reporting my reviews so they can get it deleted. I was already mentally and emotionally drained at that point, so I deleted the review out of fear and desperation.

Now, months later, I’ve gathered the strength to speak out again. I wholeheartedly regret trusting these people. I feel I was deceived, manipulated, and bullied into losing thousands of pounds on my vehicle. I will do everything I can to warn others about this deeply unprofessional and unethical business. Protect yourselves and your possessions from this company of con artists

Glitzy image not supported by the customer service

As a one time founder/operator of an auction house (retired) I have nearly 20 years experience of the business and over 50 years experience in the classic & collector car arena. My assessment of the service provided by Hampson is that they are all glitz and lack the level of customer service one would expect from their promotional material. I would never buy from Hampsons again. The rate of 55% one star compared to 45% five star tells you something……

Highly Recommended!

I recently sold my car at the Gold Cup Auction at Oulton Park. Having never sold via auction before I was not sure what to expect but the entire Hampson Auctions team were fantastic! The process was explained to me in detail and I was kept informed throughout the process. There was no pressure to make a decision on my first enquiry - I had time to consider my options and chose the best one for me. Everything was dealt with very professionally and they answered any queries I had efficiently. The photos are professionally done and your vehicle can be left at their secure storage facility and transported to the sale venue on your behalf. The whole experience was stress-free and I was thrilled with the final price achieved for my car. I highly recommend Hampson Auctions if you're looking to buy or sell a classic or performance car and would not hesitate to use them again in the future.

terrible experience with untrustworthy…

terrible experience with untrustworthy agent and company who refused to take responsibility for their employees actions

Convinced that my bike would sell easily by salesman who reached out to me, paid hundreds of pounds to get it photographed and listed on the site
Had my helmet and gloves stolen with zero accountability for the actions of the employee that they were given to
Failed to sell my bike twice over almost three months
Cost me the sale of my bike at £4500 while it was being held for the second auction where it failed again to sell, by the time I got it back my interested buyer had already bought another bike.

refused to cover the reasonable cost of replacing my helmet and tried to sidestep taking responsibility for their employees actions. AVOID

Dear Mr. Evison,

Thank you for your review.

We would like to respectfully, but firmly, address the claims made in your comments. At Hampson Auctions, we take the security and integrity of our operations extremely seriously. All vehicles and associated items are stored in a high-security facility that is fully monitored by CCTV, which has since shown that your allegations are false.

Furthermore, the legally binding documentation signed by yourself does not list the items you later claimed were provided. We also hold photographic evidence taken during intake, which does not show these items present. Based on this, we are confident that your claim is inaccurate.

We have strong procedures in place to ensure all items and vehicles are properly checked upon arrival and throughout the sales process. These systems have allowed us to verify that the allegations made in your review are not supported by the facts.

While we regret that you were unhappy with the outcome of your sale, we are satisfied that we handled this matter professionally and in line with our policies.

We wish you all the best with the future sale of your motorbike.

Kind regards,
Hampson Auctions

Awful auction house

This auction house is the worst I have ever dealt with. They are basically prepared to say anything to potential customers to secure their sale and then deny ever saying it when things don't go to plan.
They hard-sell people - my advice is stay away!

My experience was great!…

I found the exact opposite of some reviews. I sold my Mini 18 months ago. Zach advised me through the process. He was very professional and helpful. We discussed the guide price and I wanted a reserve on to get my value. He explained that it can put it in a pigeon hole and may do better at no reserve. I followed his advice and was delighted on the day with exciting bidding with a result of almost £2,000. More than expected . The whole experience and process of the auction for me was excellent. We all have to understand sellers want as much as possible and buyers want to pay as little as possible. We all have to try and get a deal done. A lot of people expect too much I think in these difficult times.
I would not hesitate to use Hampsons again for selling or buying. Best of all you can get to see the actual cars open doors and look at them in daylight.

Would not recommend at all

Would not recommend at all. Their sales team is trained to harass you constantly on the phone if they think your vehicle could make them money. They will lie about how the auction processes work and about how much they take if you don't know much and will try to convince you to remove the reserve. Do not fall for any of their tricks and keep everything in writing.

Dear Eva R

Thank you for your feedback. We are surprised to see this review, as we had the pleasure of working with you over a year ago to successfully sell your VW Camper Van. While we always welcome constructive feedback, it’s important to clarify some details to provide a balanced and accurate account for anyone reading your comments.

First, we pride ourselves on transparency in all our processes. Our fees are among the lowest in the industry for physical auctions in the UK, and full details are clearly outlined on our website, in our terms and conditions, and on the entry forms. You chose to enter your vehicle with no reserve, and the VW Camper achieved a remarkable price relative to the market conditions at the time of sale.

We understand that you expressed disappointment after the auction because the vehicle sold for less than you had hoped, as you were aiming to recover your purchase cost. However, as we explained throughout the process, the market had changed since the pandemic, a time when vehicles like yours commanded higher premiums. Despite these changes, your VW Camper performed well and achieved a strong result for its model.

We encourage open communication with our clients and maintain clear records for the benefit of both parties. While we are sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction, we respectfully disagree with your characterisation of our sales team and processes.

Should you wish to discuss this matter further, please don’t hesitate to contact us directly. We remain committed to providing transparent, professional services and continuously improving based on constructive input.

Kind regards,
The Hampson Auctions Team

Dear Michael,

Thank you for your feedback. However, we must address that your comments do not accurately reflect the professional service we provide at Hampson Auctions. Additionally, the business name you referenced in your review is incorrect. This inconsistency raises serious questions about the validity of your review.

At Hampson Auctions, we pride ourselves on marketing the vehicles we allow into our auctions extensively, as it benefits both the seller and the auction house. The better a vehicle performs in our auctions, the greater the success for everyone involved. It would make no sense for us not to market vehicles to the highest standard, and our international reach has been key in facilitating thousands of successful sales worldwide.

Sellers always have the option to set a reserve or remove it, and no decisions are made without their consent. Our priority is achieving the best possible results for our clients, guided by professionalism and integrity.

If this review were based on a genuine experience, it would likely reflect the high level of service that our clients consistently commend. For this reason, we have reported your review to Trustpilot, as it does not align with any legitimate experience of working with Hampson Auctions.

We value constructive feedback from genuine clients. If you have a legitimate concern, we invite you to contact us directly so we can address it.

Kind regards,
Hampson Auctions

Despite politely asking them to stop spamming me with daily emails and texts some at unsocial hours which is very annoying they continue!
Obviously an unprofessional unscrupulous company who do not care about their customers.
Give them a miss would be my recommendation.

Excellent Company, Highly Recommend

After selling a car with Hampson Auctions at their most recent Bolesworth Castle auction I can't recommend them highly enough.

The whole process from start to finish was excellent, I dropped the car off at their storage facility & they handled the rest as I wasn't able to make the auction in person.

Everything was transparent, the car fetched a great price & the money was paid into my account well within the stated time.

I dealt with Zach the director who was very helpful, friendly & extremely knowledgeable about all the cars in the auction. He explained everything, answered any questions I had & made the whole experience easy & enjoyable.

Will definitely be using Hampson again in future!

Sold a car through Hampson Auctions

Sold a car through Hampson Auctions. Sold for way less than what they expected it to sell for. They begged me not to put a reserve on hence I did not add a reserve. Lost £5,000 by selling through them. Would only sell with a reserve in the future as you are not protected due to them telling you to sign T&Cs.

Dear J Md,

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We welcome all reviews, but it’s important that they accurately reflect the true sequence of events to ensure a fair understanding.

Firstly, we want to clarify that at no point did anyone from our team "beg" you not to put a reserve on your car. The decision to enter your car as a late entry into the auction without a reserve was entirely yours. You initially had a potential private buyer weeks before our auction, and we wished you the best with that sale. However, when that fell through just days before our 70th Anniversary Gold Cup Auction at Oulton Park, you contacted us and requested that we include your car as a last-minute entry. Despite our auction being fully booked with over 100 lots, we accommodated your request at your insistence, with the understanding that entering your car with no reserve would generate the most interest given the limited time (and 'no reserve' cars frequently do better than those with a reserve due to higher bidder interest). We are not responsible for the price actually received at auction.

You personally drove the car over 200 miles to Oulton Park, completed the necessary paperwork on-site, and agreed to these terms. You could have chosen to put a reserve on your car and entered it into a later auction, or you could have simply kept your car, but you chose not to do this—this was your decision.

Regarding the £5,000 you claim to have "lost," this was not an actual monetary loss but rather an amount based on your personal expectations. The reality is that your vehicle performed well at auction, fetching a price consistent with, and even exceeding, the market value of similar models. This can be verified by recent auction results. It seems that your expectations did not align with the market, and this discrepancy has led to your dissatisfaction.

You complained about our communication with you in other reviews, but you repeatedly insisted on getting your car back and undoing the sale, which is not possible in an auction. Once there is a winning bid, there is a contract of sale between the seller and the buyer that cannot be undone. We tried to explain this and communicated adequately with you, answering your queries and emails, and showed you our terms, which cover such matters and which you signed up for, but you were still not satisfied.

We also need to address the nature of your reviews, which we believe are defamatory. We have noted that you have changed your reviews multiple times, and the version you first posted differs from the current reviews here and on other platforms. We still believe that your reviews are incorrect. It appears you have gone out of your way to malign our family business, including creating a false Facebook account to post additional negative comments. This behavior is not constructive and seems intended to harm our reputation rather than provide an honest account of your experience.

We take great pride in our integrity and the service we offer to all our clients. While we understand that the outcome may not have met your expectations, we stand by the fairness and transparency of our process. We believe that anyone reading this review, alongside the others you have posted, will see that your actions are not reflective of the actual service we provided.

Best regards,
Hampson Auctions
