I Wished for Death

(It won't let me put the date of experience to be accurate. No, I am not currently 7)
As someone who is much older than when I used IXL, and someone who genuinely values and appreciates their education, I hated IXL. I primarily used IXL in second grade, when I was about 7. I was also in extra help classes because I had a condition that essentially acted like dyslexia. This caused me to have a very hard time with learning, reading, and math. My school would give a certain amount of time nearly every day for how much time we had to spend in school working on IXL. I don't blame IXL completely for this part, but I was bullied and isolated from other kids because I had a much lower IXL score. Thankfully, I don't still use IXL, but when I did, I couldn't work on it at home, and IXL certainly didn't teach me anything. I remember sitting in a corner in a classroom, using one of the grubby iPads they would give us, attempting IXL. I was hiding the fact that I was crying, because I just didn't understand what I was doing wrong. Most teachers use this because they don't have to grade or anything like that, but this, this app was torture for me.
If you are a teacher, I can give you some great alternatives that still grant you more time to grade other assignments or things like that:
I-Ready- You can give assignments or just have them do their pathway. You do have to have massive tests to place the kid where they are, but you will get a ton of data from it. I-Ready also can't share your data, and by doing assignments, they can get coins to play games, or they can play math-related games. You can also see how much overall time they spend on their assignments a week, how well they do on the assignments, and more general data on them. They only have English and Math, but it's so much better than IXL
Khan Academy: This one is a classic, but here is some information if you don't know. They have videos and mini articles, they have things for most ages and most classes/types of information.
NEWSELA: I don't know if this one counts, but I find it does. They have many articles, and in each article, you can choose the reading level. Teachers can see how well students do, and they have some quick tests. They typically have these: A vocab test, a comprehension test, a written answer test, and sometimes more.
ABCMouse: Yes this is for little kids, then again, I loved this app. There is a subscription, but for ages 10 or so and below, this game is geniunely so fun, interactive and I actually learned from it. They have most genres, and maybe if you're a parent, you may find a lot of benefit. So if your kid is struggling with IXL and they are young, think about ABCMouse.
Quizlet/Knowt: These two are very similar. They both have flashcard features, test, and vocab features. There are also some games, but you can see if the kids are mastering or learning some information.
Blooket/Kahoot/Gimkit: You likely know Kahoot, but you may not know Blooket or Gimkit. They act almost identically. For a class, you could input all of the terms or questions for a test or something, and then it is a game. Kids answer questions to win various types of games, and you can see what kids generally struggle with.
EdPuzzle: I don't use these often, but they do help people learn. Essentially, they have videos, whether they are made by someone else or by you, where there are questions about the video. I don't know much about the teacher's side of these, though.
I'm certain there are more. I hope this helped, though. I don't want to just dog on teachers, so I gave many different other things. Please don't force your kids/students to use IXL; it hurts them.

Wonderful app to teach your kids what Hamida Djandoubi went through!

Truly the greatest app of all time. The CEO of IXL burnt my home down just to find my second oldest daughter, who then proceeded to pin her to the flaming wall and say "Hey, ANSWER THIS QUESTION!" It said "If Sally ate 3 apples, how much did George eat?" My second oldest daughter said 0, and the answer was 5 because 8 + 5 = 10. My second youngest daughter is so dumb... So great app, IXL, keep on doing that!

Horrible scoring system

IXL caused me to lose my mind over math terms, its scoring system is horible. It brings your score down by 10 points when u get to the 70s and it takes 5 questions to get back to where u once were. Abosolutly horrible

IXL sucks. Actually.

I'm a 6th grader with AuDHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism) and RSD (Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria) and currently, my self worth is close to zero.
I've been a "gifted child" my whole life and have almost always gotten straight As (until very recently one B from late work), so I have very, very high standards for myself and tend to get very upset when I don't meet them. So when I mess up a question and see that stupid "Sorry, Incorrect" explanation screen, I feel slightly more worthless every time. The "Smart Score" system is terrible as well, as it tends to add only 1-3 points when you get a correct answer but then immediately take away 7-15 as soon as you get something wrong. This apparently makes it better at ensuring the student has mastered the topic, when really all it does is stress others and myself out, especially when we're so close to meeting the finishing goal.

USELESS, questions don't teach

Lessons expect prior knowledge and do not teach new concepts. Missed questions lack useful information to improve such as repeating basic information on the incorrect screen and sharing confusing and sometimes conflicting information

IXL is the worst learning app on the…

IXL is the worst learning app on the face of this planet. If you are doing a skill and you think you are on on your last problem, think again. Because first of all, if you have like a smartscore of, say, 98, and you get it wrong, IT TAKES YOU BACK TO 85. that could have been your last problem, but no. If you get a problem wrong, it takes you back like 10 or 15 points. But if you get one right, it gives you 1 to 2 back!! and for the price of a membership, it is not worth it to pay a bag for a "learning app" and watch you child suffer. Parents, just dont do it.

Don’t buy torture device

Anybody who rates this app 5 stars is either lying or is a teacher who loves IXL for its only positive value: the analytics. In my opinion, my sanity as a student is more valuable than analytics. IXL uses the SmartScore to track your progress, but it is not rewarding at all. By the time you get to 90 and above one single typo could send you to a 70 and have you spend 20 minutes getting one point per question up to 90 again. One personal thing I hate is the fact that I am timed. It literally tells you how much time you have spent. I spent almost 2hrs and was on the verge of tears before I completed some skills. Most teachers way over assign it and it does nothing but add stress. I seriously don’t care anymore about learning. I just want to get this torture labeled as “education” over with. IXL is a filthy lying platform that has caused me more stress than anything and I can’t even remember the last thing I learned.

This makes children cry

My daughter was in second grade when this happened and she had to use this. This was terrible. She would cry over it because of how hard it was just for her and it is not easy. You got one question wrong and 20 points get subtracted but if you got one question right only one point would increase like what is this my daughter would literally struggle with this, and I was very disappointed and shocked when I found out, she came home crying from school because of this, and she could not pass her lesson and it does not let you move onto the next one until you get the first one done this was incredibly hard for her and the teacher quickly stopped using it. This was horrible and my older daughter who had to use this in like 2024. She had to do this, and it was hard for her. This was the same experience she cried over it because she could not get it done and it was mandatory. It got shut out quickly after too, but she had to do it the whole school year, which was very disappointing.

I HATE IXL!!!

As a 7th grade student, I have gotten 0’s on late IXL’s because they took so long. My math teacher assigned an IXL. I stayed up past midnight to finish it. Yes, after midnight. I turned it in on google classroom and it was late. During the assignment I was at a 90 smart score I got 1 question wrong. It sent me down to a 75. That is outrageous! That added 30 minutes of time to an already long IXL.

IXL Fails on all Fronts

I have experienced IXL for 5+ years, and I can say that it sucks. To give them some credit they do seem to have correct answers, at least from my experience. From other’s comments it seems to be inaccurate sometimes, so they might not even get credit there. Anyway, they are long, boring, and frustrating. They range from a minute for every other subject and twenty minutes for math assuming you get them all correct, which, most of the time, you won’t get them all correct. If you get even some wrong it can take upwards of 30 minutes. 30 minutes is also just the bear minimum, typically they are way longer. Kids do not have the patience to sit through this. Nor do they have the patience to get things wrong and get sent back. From experience, I can say they may take so long because children who don’t want to do IXLs get frustrated, then start going faster, get questions wrong because they stopped thinking clearly, and the cycle repeats until they give up, start cheating, or, by some stroke of luck, finish the IXL. I don’t blame kids for using AI, Calculators, and the internet for answers just to ease their lives and anxiety. On a side note, The time these things take can take until midnight to finish which doesn’t help. Being tired can cause some problems which don’t make the kid any better at answering questions. Also, there is the whole other can of worms that is tried to function off of less than 6 hours of sleep. On a related note, IXL does provide reasons on why you got the answer wrong, but those are typically long winded and terrible at explaining and kids are so enraged that they got one wrong that they don’t pay attention to it. Now, this is not just one thing once in a while, this is something I get several of that are due by the end of the week. This is also for six weeks in a row after first starting a quarter. Also, all of this is math, which take the longest. This is also due along with projects and homework assignments. Also, those homework assignments can be math, which then brings up the question: what is the point of IXLs when math homework can accomplish the same thing? Anyways, I don’t think that IXLs are going away anytime soon, so here are ways to make your life easier:
Calculators (good for math. Especially Desmos which can do most math)
Internet (especially useful for Social Studies and Science)
Use AI (you can type in or upload images of questions and get correct answers. It gets all subjects)
Don’t do them (if they’re a low enough part of degree. I did this in the fifth grade and I still got As)
