Night Zookeeper
Fantastically Fun Learning
Night Zookeeper is a London-based children’s brand comprising of an online learning program, a book series and a TV mini-series. All of our products centre around the magical world of the “Night Zoo”. Our aim is to make learning fantastically fun for children aged 6 to 12 years old, and unlock their creativity in the process. Our reading and writing program has been used by over 1 million children worldwide.
Night Zookeeper was founded in 2012 by Joshua Davidson and Paul Hutson. Our e-learning product was originally launched in November 2012 as a creative drawing iOS app for kids, which went on to be recognised as one of the 50 best apps of 2013 by The Observer and The Guardian.
In 2014, we revamped the app into a web version which included more extensive writing elements, a dashboard for monitoring progress and personalised feedback from tutors. Over 1 billion words have been written by children on the site. Night Zookeeper is also used in schools by teachers worldwide in an effort to harness the power of digital learning in the classroom.
Throughout the pandemic, Night Zookeeper was able to act as a useful resource for families around the world to keep their children learning as schools were forced to close and remote learning took hold.
As of 2024, our program is used by thousands of children in several countries as a way to improve their reading and writing skills in a fantastically fun way, whether as part of a homeschool, in the classroom, as a supplementary resource, or simply a productive form of screen-time.

We've been using Night Zookeeper for over 2 years. Our children have enjoyed it very much. We have seen their interest develop in things like spelling words correctly, more thoughtfulness in their writing and a newer calm when things don't always turn out or an answer isn't correct.
They have made efforts to use the program to its fullest extent, participating in many literacy challenge options.
We all love how their own individual ideas and imagination are used as the foundations this learning is channeled through. Being able to see the artistic talents and writing ideas of other children is encouraging and fun for them.

It teaches me a lot, thank you so much! The stuff I thought I knew I really didn’t.

We love this program. So original and creative. Even though I am the parent, I wish I was doing it! We enjoy the structure of the award challenges. That helps give my son goals of what to do and a sense of accomplishment. Thanks so much.

We love Night Zookeeper! The recently added quest function is something my daughter (age 7) really enjoys and I know that she can work through it on her own and is actually learning.
We’ve also read two of the books and used the reading comprehension guides for both and they’re wonderful. The guides are well put together and test her knowledge while still being fun, and the books are cute, easy reads with an engaging story line.
Overall we’re really happy with our Night Zookeeper subscription.

Great language arts supplement for homeschooling elementary kids. I like the games, the typing practice, and the age-appropriate level of feedback. The only thing I dislike is the length/frequency of the animated story segments. Not quite a TV show, but it feels that way at points. We use this program as a source of productive screen time, so the less "sit and watch" time the better. Still recommend overall.

Night Zookeeper is a fun program with many resources available to equip children on their writing journey. The children can go on an imagination adventure while learning to write tales of their own. The program is engaging and the help consistent. My children and I enjoy it.

My family has been using NZK for about ten months. While it's not the most comprehensive writing learning resource out there, my kids in general enjoy the games and social media aspect of the program.
My oldest daughter recently brought to my attention that the terms and conditions outline an alarming and concerning aspect of using NZK (shame on me for not reading the fine print up front).
By using the NZK you hand over complete intellectual property of anything your kids submit, their writing, artwork, and ideas, for NZK to use however they please, without giving any credit to the child, monetarily speaking or otherwise. This is a very big deal to my daughter who is an incredible and serious writer and artist, and was simply giving away ownership of her ideas and work. This doesn't simply read as advertising needs, it reads as an 'idea harvesting outfit' that parents pay for.
In addition, when my daughter submitted a polite and informative piece of writing to outline this to the other children on NZK, as to give them informed consent so they may choose to keep their best ideas off of NZK to maintain intellectual property rights and ownership, NZK edited her work to exclude this information. This is incredibly unsettling.
I do not discredit the program for its entertaining way of helping kids further develop their storytelling, however I do wish to help other parents make informed decisions regarding usage of NZK. You may wish to continue using NZK, but make sure your kids understand this so they may have the choice of what ideas and writing and art they are comfortable giving up ownership of.
Terms and conditions are available on their website for anyone to read.

I canceled the subscription in September as the program is not useful for us. Despite this, it was reactivated without my authorization and charged again in January. I am requesting that the account be fully canceled immediately and that no further charges be applied.

Edit : after I posted here the customer care representatives reached out to me and fixed the issue with cancellation . Other than difficulty in cancellation , we loved the program , my son's creativie writing simply soared but after a couple of years he outgrew it. Original review: impossible to cancel ! They ignore all the e-mails and there is no way to reach them by phone ! I emailed over and over but they keep trying to charge my card ! Very unprofessional . My child actually enjoyed the program when he was younger and I had no complains until I wanted to cancel because they simply IGNORE the fact that you notify them in writing and keep charging . I used to recommend this program but now I am very disappointed in how they handle their cancellations

Total fraud. DO NOT SIGN UP. We cancelled 3yrs ago and they continue to take money from our bank account.

Fraudulent company which took money out of our bank account twice with three years inbetween after id cancelled the subscription. Astonishing weak governance and cyber security and I would urge any parent not to touch with a barge pole.

Very engaging game, offers a lot of opportunity for creativity. The kids love it. It was recommended to me by another parent because their kids also love it. Would very much recommend.

My children absolutely love NZK. It keeps their imagination going and they are developing skills at the same time.

We just love Night Zookeeper! It keeps them engaged and they love the activities and adventures that they create using the platform. The many characters they create and the storylines that they give those characters have sparked a love of reading and writing.

Night Zookeeper has helped my son to see that writing is actually fun. There’s way more to this program than what you initially see and we are thoroughly enjoying watching him grow.

My child is very excited to imagine stories and to write them with the help of night zookeeper. This creative writing is gradually helping with her spelling skills.
