The key box that square ticks is seamless connectivity between the device and the app. After years of frustration with the paypal reader, square is easy, and the choice of using it a no brainer given the offer price of the device and the lower commission.
The only minus is that the app is completely engineered around the restaurant trade. For a small craft business like ours, the product catalogue is front and centre - ease of import would win you more customers, particularly if they have a complex product range.

If i could give no stars i would. Bought the card reader and downloaded the app. Repeatedly tried to complete the personal settings so I could pair the device but despite trying several times and checking all the information I couldn't submit. Every time I closed the app and tried to log back in, it said my password was incorrect, so had to keep resetting it.
Contacted customer services who clearly just don't actually read your emails and so just reply with completely unhelpful advice. Despite replying to them 3 times explaining the issues again and again I got the same, useless response.
I, therefore, will not be using Square.
I genuinely thought it would be so straightforward.

Having just started a business, and not yet knowing how many card payments I'll be taking, Square offered a quick, easy and very cost-effective solution.
When I wanted some additional material to show I take card payments, this was supplied quickly at no extra cost.
Having now begun to use the card reader, it integrates well with my Android phone and it seems to work faultless.
I've since opened a business bank account, the change over of accounts on the Square app was simple and done in seconds.
I've also now compared costs with the alternative solution offer by my business bank, I'll be sticking with Square as its overall far better value for money - unless you're taking £*000's a day in card payments, then you might find a cheaper bulk use provider. Although, for a sole trader / small business like mine, Square is the perfect solution.

I decided I should use a card payment system for a craft fair that I was selling at. I did a bit of research and found that the square option best suited my needs. It was extremely easy to set up and link with my bank account. Pricing for the card reader and transaction fees seemed very fair.
I used the software to set up stock but actually on the day only needed to use the card reader and keypad which was so fast to use.
Even though I was using my phone to manage a digital laser burning device, I could still take payments at the same time and feel confident that they would go through. Not one hitch from 12 transactions.
The day after the event I received a report into my email which very clearly outlined my net takings and fees.
The whole experience has been very positive and has given me the confidence to continue selling at Craft fairs and face-to-face events.

I don't think I have ever had a bad experience with Square.
I have been in business for 7 years and started off with Barclaycard which was horrendous. After that machine gave up (less than 1yr) I switched to Square. The app is easy to use on my phone and I can log in on other phones so I can have multiple locations at the same time.
I also have an Etsy shop and one of my favourite things is that I can connect my Square account to my Etsy shop so that it keeps track of inventory management when at market events.
18 months ago I upgraded from markets to a physical shop. I bought a used Square Terminal and continued to have my inventory synched, it's lasting quite a long time and I don't think I'll need to upgrade for a while. Open 5 days a week and the terminal battery will last the whole week.
I just bought another little reader in the black friday sale so that I can have 2 events running and the shop open.
The receipts and UI are easy to use and navigate. I recently disconnected my Square and Etsy to save on Etsy fees and all the items are still on the library which means I can keep track of certain stock throughout the day to update the Etsy manually afterwards.
I can also use the Square dashboard and item menu to create new products on the terminal.
I am utilising the free Square website to direct people to my Etsy shop for the time being.
Whenever I have a problem customer service are always there to help and are very responsive.
There is also not an extra fee or higher % on Amex! This is a life saver because so many companies these days charge extra.
Much like everything these days, I wish the % was a little lower but I wish my food shop was lower too!

I've been using Square for about 2 years but will be moving to another provider very soon. There are just so many bugs and so many unintuitive features. For example, you can have 2 users, but they can't share the same card reader at the same time. Highly frustrating.
Upon signing up for a free trial of retail plus, some supposed features weren't showing so I contacted support via live chat, who despite being quick to pick up were really no help at all. They ask for basic questions that you've already supplied answers to anyway and keep you hanging for 5 minutes before replying with another pointless question. It seems there was an issue with my account today and my free 30 day Retail trial actually enabling all features, and the suggested solution was to log out and in again. This didn't work. Tried clearing cache...that didn't work either. An hour wasted.
Then there's pricing - for Retail plus they charge £49 per location and we only use a 2nd location so we can see how many units of overflow stock our small warehouse has that we can call upon. Certainly not geared to small businesses at this cost of £98 a month.
Finally, the barcode scanner on the 2nd device doesn't enable so really, Square is ok at a free level (they pay quick) but absolutely useless if you share a business/market stall etc between 2 or more employees and it's very expensive with features that are really very basic (should be included by default) or don't actually work when they should.
Really frustrating experience.

I love my Square payment reader but paying £8.99 a month after buying something then also get charged extra for transferring to bank account is a bit unfair.

Easy to use offering regular updates and payment services and much better than previous one used. I highly recommend Square to the other provider also starts with an S! The mini card reader is great to carry to events and works everytime. Very pleased with Square and will upgrade with them as my business progresses.

Did my research online, and decided to join Square to allow me to take payments from my business when attending events. My 1st event was 30th Aug, and the Square app or the card reader did not disappoint. I was able to take many transactions, with no hiccups. So easy to set up, charge and use! Can't wait for my next event, where I can use it again.

Everything with square is so easy and straightforward. I’ve not had one issue with the card reader or app over the last year. I have the card reader that is also a stand that you insert the ipad into. I also have the app on my phone so I can use it if I was at a market selling and can keep an eye on the till when not in work. 1.75% card charge which is a lot less than most. Overall great system!

Online website plugin payment gateway works well! Avoid the card reader, awful machine! Every time it is turned on, it attempts to perform a software update, which takes 10-20 minutes. Very frustrating and unprofessional when customers are waiting. I now use my SumUp machine to save the customer waiting times. SHAME...

Great service. Little card reader is handy size, cards can be inserted and pin via tablet or phone. Charge lasts for days not hours. Never had a problem connecting either unlike others.
Payments are received quickly from Square and you get a detailed run down of items sold.
The app is easy to use. Adding new items with photos, description and variants is great, even track your margin sales and inventory.
Can't recommend enough.
