Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers encountered significant problems with payment processing, including account access issues and difficulties with tax-related transactions. People also frequently reported a complete lack of effective customer service, with unresponsive support teams, reliance on unhelpful chatbots, and an inability to speak with a human representative. Reviewers consistently experienced difficulties with the service, noting that it often failed to perform as expected, particularly after a change in payroll processors. This led to difficulties with payroll processing and financial transactions. The response time from support was also a major point of dissatisfaction, with many waiting days or weeks for replies that often did not resolve their issues. The staff, when reachable, were perceived as unhelpful and unable to provide clear solutions.

No empathy

So I did not need to use their Payroll services anymore as I was not paying anyone. I disabled the membership and had to return to collect a W2 for tax filing. I had to renew my membership to download it, ok not really a big deal, but then I got charged for the next month; I'm pretty sure I canceled it after I downloaded the file, but apparently I didn't, so I guess I didn't. I was not going to use the membership this month, so I contacted support, and they took weeks to get back to me, and even after the wait, they decided, and it was not good news; they decided not to refund me. Pretty messed up that a multi-million company couldn't refund about 30$, especially now during financial hardship and the pandemic.

I'll do my best not to do business with H&R and its subsidiaries.

Never do business with Wave

Never do business with Wave, its a scam, grave miscommunication between customer service and invoice department, it took me a month to correct a failure on their end. They wrongfully charged me for a reimbursement they failed to send to my client, they then suspended my account, they threatened to send my invoice to an outside bureau, a total mess. Caused me a great deal of stress for a month that could have been completely avoided if they had internally communicated well.

Supposed to make life easier…

Supposed to make life easier with accounting, in fact it makes it more frustrating. Connections hardly every work, always issues getting latest transactions from my bank. Don't recommend.

Off to a great start and then FAIL!!!

I thought Wave was great (5 stars) for the first few years - just slow, but I quickly found out that since most small businesses use the Cash Basis accounting methodology, and Wave only supported the Accrual method until recently. Due to numerous complaints, Wave finally added Cash Basis support, but experienced CPAs will probably warn you that it is flawed, inadequate, too limiting, and misleading for business use.

In my case, their inadequate invoicing support has created a real mess for me. My clients are humans, and as such, there tend to be at least a few who partially pay their invoice or fail to pay at all. There is no process by which to mark an invoice item as unpaid so that it is removed from your A/R, prior to re-billing for it on the next period's invoice. This leads to inaccurate reporting which less experienced CPAs and tax preparers may not catch. Wave's response to this (from the various responses I've read), indicates that they consider such a feature as unnecessary. Many have come up with workarounds, but it seems that those too are not capable of correcting all the issues. Some have found that they can overcome the issue by deleting the past invoice or line items, but then you are left with a highly inaccurate history of your actions and those of your client. There are several other issues which users encounter and fail to receive a perfect response for, and when dealing with money, it needs to be perfect. I find myself, my CPA/Tax Preparer, and others spending WAY TOO MUCH time just trying to get the numbers to jive.

As a Software Architect/Lead Developer and a long-time user of Wave, I must now recommend that you DO NOT USE WAVE ACCOUNTING! With that being said, if your business works only within perfect world situations, where payment received is guaranteed (i.e. sales handled by a third party), then you may find Wave useful, but I still can no longer recommend its use.

I gave Wave a HUGE level of tolerance at first, because they were trying to provide a much-needed service which others were charging too much for. But as time went on, their dedication appeared to fade, the problems reported continued to rise, and my tolerance for their lack of support for simple necessary functionality dropped to zero.

THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM

THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM, and stole $3000 from me. They would not release funds, based on "verification " Even when I sent them everything they needed and requested. They also have no listed phone number and a support team that wont answer questions. BIZ OWNERS beware!

Great For Accounting, Not So Much For Outside Payments

I love the Wave Apps accounting system. It's nice to have my accountant able to log in and go to work.

So, if I like it so much, why did I only give it 3 stars?

Wave Apps has no Stripe Integration for accounts based in the United States. If / when this integration happens I will gladly give 5 stars.

I was also thinking about changing from Stripe Invoicing to Wave Apps Invoicing until I saw how many people were getting holds placed on their accounts. We are moving too much money to have that happen and affect our client services.

It has a bug a bookkeeping software…

It has a bug a bookkeeping software just must not have !!!
Never ever !!!

When you scan a receipt (EG from your phone, which is nice) and you delete it after approving (you can not edit anything anymore after approving), it will still be in your books, just not in the list of receipts. But it will still be EG in your profit and loss, your exported data (only not the images) and so on !!! It looks it deleted, but it's actually not.

Another issue is that the OCR does not read the VAT. It needs to be entered manually. Not great for a VAT registered company.

They randomly suspended my payments…

They randomly suspended my payments without warning. These also provided no individuals or customer service to have a direct conversation with (on the site I was informed they are "support" and only "account" team members could address my issue).
In their email to me they listed over a dozen items I had to provide in order to potentially have my account unfrozen including (and I kid you not) - all my emails, phone calls, and text messages with my customers.
It took numerous emails and follow ups to have my account unfrozen (it was not unfrozen that day either). Hands down the most unprofessional way to address a concern on their end, especially when they simply could have asked for the information first instead of shutting down my payments entirely.

Scam project

Have use their services for invoicing along with their Wave Payment to bill my clients. After one month of use when received just another payment of 300$+ they suspended my payments without any explanation, hold funds for 90 days and after refund to customer! Refund my payments for service I have already sold and give to customer! So they just stole my money. Beware of this company because you just lose you money, time and ruin you business

Excellent accounting platform for freelancers and small businesses.

I am a freelancer and have been using Waveaps for about 4 years.
Quickbooks and Xero no doubt have more features but Waveapps has all the functionality I need. I just cant get my head round that its completely free! If you are a freelancer and want a simple to use system for invoicing your clients and tracking expenses, Waveapps is perfect.

We currently use the free Accounting…

We currently use the free Accounting side of Wave. It is a great product - for FREE. With the business in its start up phases, paying nothing for a great accounting software is wonderful.

The only negative thing I have noticed is the PayPal integration does not auto-sync transactions like bank account integrations. But for a free product, I think I can manage click twice to import the new transactions.

In regards to the support; it's a free product. They can't pay an entire team to help you and I if they aren't bringing in the money to support it... For what everything is, I am satisfied with the support offered.

Amazing, considering it's free

Wave is a funny functional accounting software suite for small business. It's completely free to use with no limitations, no ads and no branding on your invoices.

I have never tried the Stripe integration or anything related to payments really, so I can't comment on that aspect.

Some issues I had that were so annoying I eventually switched to Airtable:
- Each customer can only have 1 delivery address. That meant I had to create as many entries for a single customer as their possible delivery addresses. In my opinion, delivery addresses should be their own section and we should be able to associate a warehouse with multiple customers and vice versa.
- Cannot generate invoices from spreadsheets. Let's say I want to create an invoice with 100 line items. Most likely I already have a spreadsheet that lists the prices and all the details. I wish I could just copy from the spreadsheet and paste into Wave, or upload the spreadsheet and have Wave convert it into an invoice. Same goes for supplier invoices. You have to manually enter everything you buy. Excel/CSV import is a MUST.
- Limited invoice customization. Not a deal breaker but should be easy to improve.
- No separate "Payment Info" in invoices. It has to go under "Notes"
- You can't edit, create or even view estimates in the mobile app. It's like they don't even exist.

I really hope that Wave reads this and trys to fix the problems. I'd love to return to it.

Be Warned – Wave Wont Help You Get Your Money.

Do not use Wave if you want your money paid to you. Though I had been using them for a while without any trouble, my most recent invoice that was paid was not passed onto me. When I asked them to release the funds, they referred me to third party Stripe, who wiped their hands of any responsibility. Wave didn’t appear to care that I was owed money and shut down communication with me.

Do not use Wave

Software is decent for invoicing but payment processing is horrible. They claim to accept payments and have no holds but when your clients pay, they hold your funds for 4 months. Don’t use them!
