Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 1,211 reviews, most reviewers were somewhat happy with their experience overall. Many customers find the platform easy to use for searching ancestors, building family trees, and accessing extensive records. People appreciate the available DNA resources and tools, which help them discover relatives and learn new facts about their family history, often describing the process as engaging and enlightening. However, some customers noted concerns regarding the accuracy of 'hints' and user-generated trees, finding them unreliable or based on guesswork. A few other people also felt that DNA results sometimes lacked detail or specific features like a chromosome browser. Additionally, some reviewers reported issues with automatic subscription renewals, unexpected charges, or difficulties contacting customer service for refunds.

£7.99 per month well spent

Some people may consider £7.99 a lot of money but to me it's worth every penny to be able to see how my shared matches relate to each other. And as new pro tools are added it gets more interesting and helps add life to my trees.

Have given 3 stars as a long with other Ancestry members in particular my cousin, when you add media to your gallery, when the box comes up to link the media to a member of your tree, the box appears & as soon as you do this the box disappears.Phoned Ancestry, did what they advised, cleared my cache tried a different browser to no avail.Ancestry please sort this issue out. This issue has been going on for a time.

Thank you for sharing your review. We are very sorry to hear that this media linking issue has been causing so much frustration for you and your cousin.

Having the pop-up box instantly disappear when you try to link photos or documents to your family tree is incredibly disruptive to your research. Since clearing your cache and changing browsers didn't resolve the glitch, this points to an issue.

While we cannot submit individual technical tickets on behalf of members from here, we highly encourage you and your cousin to contact our specialized technical support team directly so they can gather your account details and prioritize a fix.

Rip-off.

6 months since I signed up for this - 2 failed DNA tests (despite meticulous following of their instructions) and they've taken £100 in membership fees which is completely useless to me without the results! The website is horrible to navigate and support staff unhelpful.

Hi Jodie. We are so sorry to hear about the frustration of having two samples fail analysis, especially over a six-month period.

We want to clarify that our memberships are separate from the DNA test. You do not need a paid subscription to view your main DNA results, but you can use your current membership to build your tree and search our historical record collections in the meantime. If you'd like to explore that side of the site, this guide can help you get started:
https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/Getting-Started-Lesson-1-Starting-Your-Tree

When a sample fails, we always offer a free replacement kit, which you can request directly through your account here:
https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/Replacing-a-DNA-Kit

To give your next sample the best possible chance of passing, we highly recommend reviewing these steps:

- Change the timing: If you provided your last sample in the morning, try the afternoon instead (or vice versa).

- Do not eat, drink, smoke, chew gum, or touch the inside of your mouth for 30 minutes before collecting your sample.

- Try brushing your teeth or using mouthwash, then wait 30 to 45 minutes before providing your sample.

- Make sure the liquid saliva (not the foam or bubbles) reaches the fill line.

- If you can’t produce enough saliva in one try, refrigerate your tube in an upright position between attempts. You can refrigerate your sample for up to a week before adding the stabilizing fluid in the saliva tube.

We truly hope this is helpful and that you will still have an interesting DNA experience in the end!

Subscription

Bought DNA kit, did not subscribe to a free month and then yearly subscriptions thereafter, but my ancestry took £109 yearly subscription from my account. Just had a call from a condescending advisor telling me I did subscribe but didn’t realise, referring to an email address and Apple ID which aren’t mine, and then trying to talk over me when I’m advising of this. She wouldn’t listen when I told her I even had the email thanking me for purchasing the DNA kit at £19.90, and no trial period and subscription were ever mentioned until I got the email thanking me for having used the trial period(which I didn’t have), and telling me I needed to cancel by the date before the email was sent if I didn’t want to pay the yearly subscription. I was offered a free DNA kit and an email to cancel next year subscription as a consolation, which I refused and was adamant that I wanted the whole £109 back. She then went away and told me what she could do for me was give me 25% back, which again I refused. She kept telling me to stop arguing with her, and then. said she could give me either 50% or 100% back. After telling her I would settle for nothing less than a 100% refund, she hung up on me. Thankfully, I had paid through PayPal and opened up the dispute through them. Just checked on PayPal and 100% refund has been issued. Wouldn’t recommend these to anybody, unless they are strong enough to stand their ground and dispute any additional charges that they haven’t signed up to because they will be charged them if my experience is anything to go by.

While we always aim to be completely transparent with our subscription options during checkout, we deeply regret how your support call was handled, as this does not reflect the standard of service we strive to provide. A fascinating well-recommended journey

I first started this just to keep track of who was who in family photo's but when I started digging and going further and further back, I never would have realised that the Industrial Revolution wasn't just a dusty page in a history book - my family was an active part of it! Still lots of un-answered questions and some dead-ends (adopted great grandfather - so no prior records). However the genetics also answer a lot of questions . Fascinating journey.

Absolute scam.

Absolute scam.
I got my DNA results that I paid for however what they don’t explain initially is that you are expected to pay £50 per month going forward
This is extremely hard to try to cancel- I spent a whole morning going round in circles trying to cancel it and unable to speak to anyone about it.
Managed to cancel now £50 has been taken out of my bank- again I can’t get in contact with the company at all.
I’m going to have to cancel this with my bank directly
Avoid at all costs as this company is not upfront about how they work
