UC4 TREATED ROTTING FENCE POSTS
UC4 ROTTING FENCE POSTS
New fencing and posts installed in May 2018. Two had rotted away by, Sept 2023, and needed replacing. Found two more are rotten and again need replacing March 2026. It would be fair to say the remaining posts will probably need replacing before long. l am not confident the remaining post will last a full 10 years, let alone 15 year. Note : All were cemented in the ground by Acorn Fencing Company.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The posts we sell are pressure treated to UC4 standards and correctly installed should last over a decade and longer if subsequently treated. However, posts which are incorrectly installed, or have their treatment integrity diminished by cutting will cause this type of deterioration. Best practice for submerged posts is clear:
• Avoid Cutting In-Ground Ends: Cut the top of the post instead, and apply a preservative (like copper-based treatments) to that new surface.
• Use Proper Treatment Class: Ensure posts are rated for "Use Class 4" (ground contact).
• Prevent Water Logging: Do not make a concrete "boot" that traps water. Place 150mm of gravel at the bottom of the hole for drainage.
• Slope Concrete: If using concrete, finish it above ground level, sloping it away from the post to shed water.
• Protection Methods: Consider painting the underground part with bitumen or wrapping it with a damp-proof membrane to further protect the timber.
For maximum longevity, keeping the treated, uncut end in the ground with proper drainage is the best approach.
Without more information, it is impossible to state the cause with certainty, but your description would suggest an issue with installation as opposed to the quality of the post. As a customer we want you to be happy. Therefore, please call the branch and we can advise on the use of repair spurs to support the fence without replacing posts. If you choose to replace the posts, we will offer a discount against your purchase to show that we understand your frustration. All staff in our AVS branch network have considerable experience in fencing, many of whom worked as contractors before joining us. They are always happy to offer advice and make suggestions as to best practice when installing a run of fencing.

We always find that the level of customer services at the branch in Peterborough is second to none. The prices are always competitive and the range of materials and products is excellent. I can happily recommend AVS.

Poor Delivery/Tracking Service
I chose to order from this company as it was the most competitive price, but that was the only plus point. I received this invitation to review, 2 days after placing the order, but the order had not arrived, so not sure how they expect a rating when the order had not even been delivered!!!Delivery was stated as 3-5 business days, which was fine, I would hoped it would have been sooner rather than later. However by the 5th day I had heard noting and there was no way of progress chasing the order on line with an expected delivery date and time (most suppliers do offer this), so I rang the customer to enquire when it would be coming and was told between 1pm and 2pm that day, by 2.30pm no sign of it, so rang again to be told it was on it's way and maybe it had held up in traffic, but the depot is only 20 minutes from here, if that was the case then maybe someone could have called me. Eventually it arrived around 3.30pm
Very disappointed, in hindsight, I would rather have paid the extra to another supplier and have a more reliable delivery service.
