Expedia bookings get bumped first — your reservation isn’t a priority

My wife and I booked a trip to Cabo San Lucas through Expedia for our 20th anniversary. Everything seemed fine until our return.

We received a notice during check-in that we had to speak with an attendant. When we arrived at the airport, we were told the flight was overbooked and we had been bumped. The airline offered to rebook us 24 hours later. This wasn’t an isolated issue — there were about 15–20 other passengers in the same situation, and every single one of them had booked through Expedia.

To be clear, we had valid tickets and a confirmed reservation — yet we were still the first to be removed when the flight was oversold.

We had no ability to stay another night in Mexico due to work and family obligations. We were forced to scramble and ultimately spent $1,500 out of pocket for a one-way flight to get back to the U.S. We also had to fly into a different airport and pay additional transportation costs just to get back to our car.

When we contacted Expedia, support was extremely frustrating. You can only reach them via chat, and they repeatedly told us to deal directly with the airline, despite the fact that the booking and payment were made through Expedia. There was no ownership, no escalation, and no meaningful help.

This is actually the second time we’ve had a serious issue with an Expedia booking. On a previous trip, we arrived at a hotel only to be told our reservation was no longer valid due to overbooking.

The pattern is clear: Expedia may offer slightly cheaper prices, but when something goes wrong — especially overbooking — you appear to be at the bottom of the priority list and left to deal with the consequences on your own.

Recommendation: Avoid Expedia for critical travel bookings, especially flights. Saving a small amount upfront is not worth the risk of being stranded or forced to pay significantly more last-minute.

Expedia review ✈️🌍

Expedia review ✈️🌍
Great for comparing prices and finding travel deals fast. Packages can save money, but always read the fine print. Smooth when everything goes right… stressful when changes or refunds are needed. And honestly, rewards can be hard to use since not every booking clearly shows eligibility. Best move: compare on Expedia, then check direct booking too. #TravelTips #Expedia #SmartTravel

We booked a vacation to Jamaica for our honey moon through Expedia. I would definitely think twice before doing this yourself. Our resort in Jamaica obtained damage during the hurricane that hit late 2025 resulting in them being closed for repair till June. Our honeymoon is early May. We called Expedia to see if they would help us out with talking to the airlines to change the dates of our flight to when the resort would be open. They were unwilling to help us out at all. In fact we could barely understand the customer service representatives. If you are looking to plan a vacation I highly recommend you just book it yourself. Do not use Expedia. It was nothing but a headache and them telling us to call and fight with the airlines ourselves. They do not provide any service other than taking your money.

I would rate them a 0 if it allowed to do so. They are not upfront with their pricing. Nothing will be 100% refunded to you no matter what protection plan you purchase or what it says when you are making your purchase. Even when you try to use the credit they give you, they will follow other 'policies' like a 100$ re-admittance fee on the flight that you cancelled thinking it was 100% refundable and will not tell you that until you try to use the credit. DO NOT EVER BOOK WITH THEM! Also have reason to suspect then they went into my account and changed my original booking because the day I called and complained about this I received 4 e-amils with a booking confirmation when I did not book anything and could not even use my credit.

A complete scam

A complete scam. No support for vendors unable to fulfill reservations. Put on hold for 5 hours, told I refused to answer their calls and they got a busy signal. If you’re already on the phone with someone it would make sense to be unable to call them again. Rude and lying support staff.

There are other sites

Alternate post to following with Capital one…because apparently Expedia is the 3rd party that is used through them and ultimately the reason my dispute was denied.

I’ve been a capital one member for some time now, and used the venture cards for work…the good is that the redemption process and ability to create alternate cards…is great. However, the customer service, certain policies are subpar. Booking through their capital one travel site for our first NY trip back at the end of March turned out to be the last straw. Booked in advance, about a month prior…finally arrive on a red eye. The hotel “millennium time square” was extremely unacceptable. Dirty rooms, hair in places, literally no amenities despite both the hotel site and capital one travel portal stating nothing of the sort. Confirmed there hasn’t been anything open since before COVID. False advertising at its most blatant. Confirmed with hotel of the exception to cancel my reservation to find alternative accommodations…called capital one and they opened a dispute with themselves to credit me back. Just recently the dispute was closed and I was re-charged the $500. Back and forth, back and forth…no exception and out the amount. Closed my account the same date. When closing…my offer: “if I spend $3000 in the next 2 months I get $200 in travel credit”

Seriously, what the …I’m no longer tolerating just blatant ignorance to the issues.

No more accounts with this bank.

NEGATIVE STARS! 👎 HORRIBLE COMPANY!

If I could leave negative stars I would. We booked the room til Saturday, well Friday morning my dad's back went out and he couldn't walk at all without a walker. So we had to check out a day early at 8 am (before checkout time). When we checked out we were told to call Expedia to get our refund, since we purchased the Travel Insurance, and were eligible for the refund. Dad had to use the luggage rack as a walker to even make it to the truck, I had to pump the gas for him when we stopped, etc. We had a 9 hr drive home. Otw home he called and made an appt with his physician to be seen. He has been bed ridden since. WELL...we call Expedia to get the refund, and after going through 5 different people, someone finally comes on and says EVEN THOUGH WE BOUGHT TRAVEL INSURANCE, THEY WOULD NOT REFUND US FOR THE NIGHT BECAUSE HE DID NOT GO TO THE HOSPITAL THAT MORNING HE PULLED HIS BACK OUT. SAID WE COULD FILE A CLAIM BUT IT WOULD BE POINTLESS!!!!!! AND IF YOU HAVE A PREEXISTING CONDITION THE INSURANCE WOULDN'T COVER IT ANYWAYS! They are the most CROOKED agency I have EVER had the DISPLEASURE of dealing with. Hey EXPEDIA, you want proof, how about a video of my dad not being able to walk, work, reach around, pick anything up, etc. STAY AWAY FROM EXPEDIA!!!! THE INSURANCE THEY OFFER IS USELESS!!!!!! Use Booking instead, they are so much more reliable, my dad gave you people the benefit of the doubt, well you have lost new customers, and current customers, we contacted the property we stayed at which was AMAZING, they said you were just in it for yourselves and don't care about the customers....couldn't agree more.

Expedia SCAM

Expedia takes your money in full but does not pay the trip until the travel day. If you change or cancel even a month in advance Expedia keeps half of your money ! Expedia is a big SCAM. Never use Expedia. Also be sure to look at the web page of your hotel and be sure Expedia didn't copy their photos so it looks like you booked direct but accidentally booked through Expedia.

EXPEDIA is TRASH

I rented a car in Mexico through their website. I was put in a dangerous position by being picked up in the rental car, driven to "the office" that was a garage, where they attempted to negotiate a completely different and much higher price. Fortunately, I am a male who speaks Spanish but this could have been a much worse situation. My partner and I walked over a mile back to the airport on the highway at night to get a REAL rental car from the airport. Expedia DID NOT REFUND my rental. EXPLICIT LANGUAGE ON EXPEDIA.

Never again!

Never again!
Renting a car through Expedia: I found much cheaper deals than through Skyscanner or other platforms - but then I started looking for the insurance terms - these are well concealed, and only after contactong the supprt of Expedia I found out that the rental fee does not include basic insurance as in other platforms (even for same car and rental company) - Should I not noticed that I would have paid a lot more at the desk!

Poor customer service

Save yourself a headache and book directly with the airline/hotel/car rental company or use an actual travel agent. This company seems to want to punt you around to anyone but someone actually able to help you with your reservations.

I usually don't have a problem with Expedia but I also have never needed to make changes to reservation. Making changes is ridiculous and 5 days later, they are still unable to get back to me about the change. Also, the travel insurance is a scam and is through a 3rd party so pretty much useless. Of course their CSR's are God knows where and try to help but it's a call center.

Anything but helpful

Booked a flight to China and long story short, flight got cancelled but the saddest part was that Expedia did NOTHING to help us with the situation. Tried calling them, and all they did was either left us hanging, or ended the call without rendering any assistance to resolve the situation. Flight kept getting cancelled and Expedia staff was anything but helpful. We ended up going straight to customer service counter in china to booked direct tickets back. Easily the worst platform to be booking your tickets please avoid this platform at all cost. Go to other websites to get your tickets at least they don't leave you in the lurch.

Expedia Predatory Practices - Car Rentals

I booked a car rental through Expedia for Hilo, Hawaii. I prepaid for this reservation. The Expedia receipt states “all mandatory taxes and fees are included.” But when I got to the rental counter, I was charged $51 extra. Expedia tried to give me the run around and said that they weren’t responsible for those fees. It took four attempts to reach them to get an Expedia credit for it, but my bigger issue is that this company is committing a predatory practice by falsely advertising a lower price, telling the customer that all taxes/fees are included, only for the customer to then be hit with additional local tax when picking up the car. Do NOT rent cars through Expedia.

Booked $150 car → forced to pay $380…

Booked a car through Expedia for $150 total.
At pickup in Punta Cana, I was required to pay an additional $380 in mandatory charges that were not clearly disclosed at the time of booking.
This was not optional — I could not receive the vehicle without paying.
Expedia refuses to refund, stating I “signed at pickup,” but this ignores the fact that the full cost was not transparently presented upfront.
This is misleading pricing. Be careful when booking.

Masterclass in Deception

Expedia’s refund policy is less about customer service and more about a calculated "gotcha" game involving the clock. If you’re looking for a company that prioritizes technicalities over common sense, you’ve found it.
I attempted to cancel my reservation by what any reasonable human being considers the "deadline" of midnight. However, Expedia uses the 12:00 a.m. trap. By defining the deadline as 12:00 a.m. on the date of arrival, they effectively ensure the deadline has passed the very second that day begins. Most people—you know, the ones who don't live in a legal contract—view midnight as the end of the day, not the invisible thief that robs you of your refund eligibility before you’ve even had your morning coffee.
The Reality of the "Midnight" Policy:
The Deception: They advertise a cancellation date, but by setting the time at 12:00 a.m., they’ve essentially shortened your window by a full 24 hours compared to what a consumer logically expects.
Zero Flexibility: When I pointed out this obvious ambiguity, the response was a wall of corporate indifference. No option to move the reservation, no partial credit—just a firm "thanks for the free money."
Predatory Logic: They rely on the fact that "12:00 a.m." is a linguistic gray area to deny refunds on a technicality.
The Verdict: Expedia would rather keep your money on a semantic "win" than keep a customer for life. They are hiding behind a clock to avoid doing the right thing. Save yourself the headache and the "late" fees—book directly with the hotel. At least they understand how a calendar works.
