Ok but I need SW that adapts to the way I work not the other way around.
Still better than others (more expensive ones ) that I have tried before.

Irresponsible with integrations, bad customer support
The tool systematically relies on integrations, and doesn't work well at it. The whole point of FreeAgent is that you can connect your bank accounts. If you can't connect your bank accounts, you're better off with other tools.
Yet these integrations regularly have issues and they don't provide support from them. They will make excuses about themselves not being the builders of the integrations, refer you to external websites and to "speak to your bank". They do this even when the problem is on their side. Most importantly: this is THEIR tool. Their problem. Who built the integration isn't relevant if you have a good product manager to set up visibility features, but if that's so much of an issue, then build your own integrations, write better support articles, etc. It's your product that doesn't work guys. Banks don't have to sort it out for you. We pay you for an accounting solution with integrations, don't push your problems with your partners to the clients. Own them and solve them.
I systematically have other customer support problems -- customer support does not read tickets, they simply paste irrelevant copies. If you have a multi-message case, forget about cutomer support reading the full thing, they just take every message as a new case from scratch, meaning they keep repeating the same mistakes over and over.
Also their support articles are massively outdated and ask you to press buttons that don't exist.

I was very worried about changing over to digital accounting, being less than tech savvy. However, after extensive research and testing this one was the most user friendly for me. Very happy with it.

5 Star accounting software!
I honesty don't know why anyone would give Freeagent anything less than 5 Stars! I've been using this accounting software for over ten years as a sole trader! I use it to file my SA & VAT. They have recently added support for CIS for contractors and are up to date with the new MTD for income tax. Not to mention it's completely free for anyone with a Mettle or Natwest account, seems like a no brainer to me!
Great accounting software
Great accounting software. Easy and straightforward to use and the app makes it so simple to keep on top of everything
Submitted my EOY early for the first time!
A really great, intuitive system that has streamlined my bookkeeping and accounting (1 director limited company) and has got me ready for all the new MTD requirements coming in as well as being able to accept credit/debit card payments for invoices. I did a few months of transactions and found it so easy I decided to back-date for another year so I could use this software for submitting my previous EOY accounts as well. I've never submitted one early before...first time for everything!! I would love to see some of the 'Smart Capture' features developed to pick out more information using AI, such as invoice reference, currency, whether the invoice is 'reverse charge' etc.
Decent software, exceptional customer support
Freeagent is a decent software but what really makes the company stand out is the support why provide. Never had such a consistently great customer experience, fabulous people always on hand to help you solve problems or get what you need to do, done. Wish more companies were like this! Makes doing my least favourite part of being self employed that bit less excruciating.
Fantastic software for managing your company accounts
Freeagent has made managing my accounts so much easier than before. It’s been fairly easy to learn and simple to integrate with HMRC. Would definitely recommend!

This is brilliant and a gamechanger for me. No more having to chase payments, or work out who hasn't paid. It's user friendly and the online help centre is great; there are lots of helpful tutorials to assist you.
I did the 30 day free trial, and now I'm a monthly subscriber!
Highly recommend

I have used Free Agent free with Natwest and Mettle accounts and found it to be amazing and meeting the needs and more for my business use. I highly recommend and would most certainly pay for this service
Simple yet deceptively powerful
Simple yet deceptively powerful. I have used a few other accountancy apps in my time (Xero, Pandle, Crunch), but FreeAgent is the most suited to my needs and way of working. I especially love the way it automatically reconciles transactions, and then all I have to do is approve them. I had the opportunity to use free software, but I am willing to pay for FreeAgent because I trust it.

Good support, but critical product design flaw they refuse to fix
I went into FreeAgent wanting it to work. Their support team are polite, responsive, and professional. Unfortunately, after a long and detailed exchange with support, managers, product and compliance teams, I’ve had to conclude that the software itself has a serious design limitation that makes it unsuitable for my business.
The core issue is how FreeAgent handles bank feeds and transaction dates.
When transactions are imported via Open Banking, FreeAgent treats the bank’s clearing date as an uneditable “source of truth”. In simple terms, that means you cannot correct the transaction date to reflect the actual payment date or VAT tax point without deleting and recreating transactions or using awkward workarounds.
For VAT-registered businesses, this matters. At quarter and year ends, clearing dates often differ from actual payment dates. You need to be able to control which VAT period a transaction falls into, based on HMRC time-of-supply rules. FreeAgent effectively locks this away from the user.
I raised this as a genuine workflow and compliance concern. Support escalated it internally to Product and Compliance, who ultimately confirmed that:
• This behaviour is by design
• They do not plan to change it
• They will not discuss it further
Their official workaround is to re-enter expenses as “Bills”. In reality, this is not a serious solution. It requires creating supplier records, addresses and metadata for hundreds of small receipts – something no real business can do efficiently. It also contradicts their own guidance about when to use “Expenses” versus “Bills”.
What FreeAgent will likely respond to this review (and what they’ve told me):
“Our bank feed ensures data integrity and reflects your bank statement.”
Yes, but data integrity is not the same as accounting accuracy. Clearing date ≠ tax point. Other platforms handle both.
“You can use Bills instead.”
This is not a viable workflow at scale. It turns automation into manual data entry.
“Most of our users are fine with this.”
Possibly. But if you run a VAT-registered business with real volume, this becomes a serious limitation very quickly.
“They discussed this internally.”
They did. And they chose not to fix it.
I don’t doubt the intentions of the staff. I do, however, think the product architecture is behind the rest of the market and that the refusal to engage further is disappointing.
If you’re a VAT-registered business and believe accounting software should allow you to accurately record the transaction date shown on VAT receipts (in line with HMRC guidance), it would be interesting to know how other users feel about this.

The customer service is second to none! So friendly and helpful and always resolve my issues.

I like having so many strands of the business in one place but i don't find it very intuitive. I probably need to with a few more videos but its taken ages to work some things out like how to mark a bill as paid. It really is great on the tax side which i was really worried about.
