Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 34 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently complained about unexpectedly high baggage fees, expensive food options during long journeys, and frustrating extra charges just to secure decent seat selections. Travelers also experienced major issues including severe flight delays, mishandled and lost luggage, and cramped, uncomfortable seating that made long trips extremely difficult. However, some customers also noted that certain staff members were very nice and that individual trips actually went quite well without any major problems. A few people also appreciated the dedicated efforts made by the team to successfully recover missing luggage and ensure its safe delivery to their destination.

Cheap for a reason

Tickets were cheap for a reason. Flew from Auckland to NY via Honolulu. First, Honolulu airport is a food desert, options are all very overpriced and quality is terrible. Luggage was also lost, was lucky I packed enough clothes in my carry on for the NY winter. Food on the flight was also very bland with minuscule portions.

Horrible affiliate gaps in responsibility

In march this year I made airline reservations for 2 of us to fly Hawaiian Airlines from PDX (Portland) to Honolulu in September. I used my Wells Fargo CC points and paid cash for one seat and 2 upgrades for more room and advanced check-in. In May I received a notification through Wells Fargo Rewards that our flight had been changed. All of the attached flight info for the new flights indicated that our seat upgrades had been carried over. However, when I logged on to Hawaiian Airlines site to check, we literally had no assigned seats. I actually had to pay for the upgrades again to lock in our seating. Again, in July, I received another notice of flight change, to which I sent the approval reply. The flight was now scheduled for 7:55 am which I absolutely did not want to deal with. I logged on once again to verify my twice-paid for upgrades and they again did not show. I paid for the seats we wanted yet again (they were not as good as the ones we lost), and at that point i was compelled to contact Hawaiian Airlines to have them explain why I was being overcharged for the same flight. The answer was "we do not manage or cannot touch 3rd party bookings". To be fair, I got the same answer from Wells Fargo, that they can't touch information on the Hawaiian Airlines system. However, what really wound me up was that the Hawaiian agent refused to look up my flight, and they failed to acknowledge that my newly assigned confirmation code was not a 3rd party code, but a Hawaiian code, and that ALL of the incurred over-charges hit my credit card as coming from Hawaiian Airlines.

I have flown Hawaiian Airlines many times in the past, mainly in the 70's and they were wonderful. As of today they are as horrible as Frontier. I will not fly Hawaiian Airlines again

The worst airline I have ever flown in…

The worst airline I have ever flown in 50 years of flying. Abused by a stewardess onboard. Rude, aggressive and a safety threat. No response from their CEO or their customer service department. Avoid at all costs.

Local Awesome, national good, internationally okay.

Local Awesome, national good, internationally okay.
Depending on which company you compare to, the rating does change.

Among local airlines there are, it is definitely the choice. They are reliable inter-island wise.
Nationally, still good, compare to LCC or some non-LCC airlines.

Internationally, there are better service airlines, food wise (food choice or taste), customer service (even more friendly or respectful), comfort (A/C temperature not being too cold or seat space), etc.

However, depending on price, whenever I fly to the U.S.A from Japan or vise versa I do choose them a lot.

Mahalo for the service.

Worst service / airline processes and…

Worst service / airline processes and experience ever… flying back from Hilo to Sydney. Arrived at the airport over 2 hours early. Checked luggage… then had to wait for security. No mention when I checked that one of the machines was down and the wait was over 3.5 hours to get through the scanner… Meant missed flight, then missed connecting flight. To my surprise the “machine hadn’t just gone down”… it had been down for a few days… They could have prioritised it being fixed, text passengers to let them know arrive 4 hours ahead to allow time to get through security (due to only one bag scanner).
They then also lost my luggage - which I later managed to track down a few days later thanks to the apple AirTag.. - not the Hawaiian staff who had no idea where it was.
Only flew with Hawaiian to get points as a partner airline to Virgin Australia.
Needed to do a claim for insurance on extra costs incurred from this issue (connecting flights and hotels not connected with this booking)… extra costs included $500 … wrote in feedback and complaints several times to all channels and ZERO response.
Points also never came through even though they had my number, submitted claim through virgin with details and to Hawaiian. Seriously most incompetent service at all levels. Seriously would AVOID flying with airline this incompetent at basics.

-5⭐️

I booked two nonstop flights out of Vegas to OGG. Hawaiian does not fly to NY so we booked with southwest out of Buffalo (also a non stop to avoid any issues). Being that I still have some residual effects from my last surgery and my husband has long lasting issues due to a motorcycle accident we had to break up the flights with an overnight in Vegas as neither one of us can physically handle 17+ hrs on planes and through airports. Also gave us time if in the event a flight was delayed or cancelled we would still be able to make our flight. Unfortunately southwest did cancel our flight out of Buffalo. And after spending $1200 more to try and make our flight in Vegas with Hawaiian Airlines a delay with delta prevented that from happening. So when I was certain we would not make that flight I called Hawaiian to let them know we wouldn’t make our flight and that I was releasing the tickets so they were available to someone in the event they had an emergency or to just resell to other customers. The rep I spoke with was incredibly rude and unhelpful. Her only response was “I can not make changes to your reservation” and she must have mentioned 3 times in our brief 3min call that the southwest cancellation was not their problem. Which I’m totally aware of I was just informing her as to why we were unable to make our flight. I also know my tix were not refundable, I was not asking for a refund I simply called to release the tickets however I did ask if she could possibly give us a waver on one check bag but after mere seconds into the conversation I already knew she was not going to be helpful whatsoever. Anyway after she repeatedly stated she “can not make changes to our reservation” I said fine just leave it as is then I guess but I told her we are still flying into OGG the following day and will need our return flights home. Again she said “I can not make changes to your reservation”. My response that’s fine I don’t wish to change anything just making sure our return flights are intact.
I had plenty of time to let the hotel/car rental place know we would be arriving late and after the conversation with the Hawaiian Airlines rep the night before I figured I better touch base with them again just to be sure everything was on the up and up with our return flight. So I opened up a chat with Hawaiian Airlines, it took forever to get an actual human. The first time I gave up because it said connecting you with an agent and nobody ever responded. I during two layovers I attempted several times to call the 1800 line and got busy signals, what sounded like a fax line, completely bizarre. Double and triple checked the number and I was called the correct one. Even though tapped it directly on the webpage. So attempted the chats again and the one individual I chatted with told me my return flights were no longer valid (even tho when I went on the website it said that they were) but I just wanted to be sure being we were 1/3 of the way around the world from home.

At this time I was just exhausted and our last leg of the flight had no Wi-Fi so I was unable to continue communication with Hawaiian.

The following morning I called and got the same busy signals. So I opened another chat. This time the rep said my return flights were good. But because the first rep had told me that they were no longer valid I still wanted to speak to an actual human. So I attempted to call over and over the next few days with no success. We then decided to go to the airport (over an hour one way from our accommodations) to verify our return flights were valid. I get to the counter and the gentleman spent over a half hour typing away, he went and got a lady, she too was looking at our itinerary (on their computer, I could not see what they were looking at to see why it took so long to verify these flights. 45 min after I got to the counter a completely different person comes up and says “they are fine” I tried to explain the issues I had and offered to show the screenshots of the correspondence with Hawaiian via chat and he was not interested whatsoever. His name was Thomsdun. I asked him to give me something to ease my mind that these were valid flights, a printout with his signature and his name if something were to go wrong I had something to fall back on (as we are nearly half way around the world). He refused and his time was very rude and dismissive, told me he doesn’t do that and I had to call reservations. Getting through to reservations at the time was impossible! He was aware of this or he should be as he was mgmt. tried to call got the busy signal. I opened a chat (repeatedly called while waiting for a human min chat and finally got through on the phone) So had chat open while on a call. One rep said tix were good the other said they were not. I could not bank on such incompetence and ultimately had to rebook and pay for new flights home! This incompetence stole 5 days of my trip

I have been flying Hawaiian airlines…

I have been flying Hawaiian airlines for many years and my experiences have almost always been great. I don't understand the many negative reviews here.

Last week I flew from Seattle back to Oahu, any my flight was very good. Arrived on time, flight attendants were attentive and genuine, and even the food was quite good.

I think too many people expect a "first class experience" even though they are flying coach. I love the experience of flying Hawaiian!

Everything that is bad about an airline…

Everything that is bad about an airline is summed up as Hawaiian Airlines. To this day they have not responded to my email complaint although they've acknowledged it.
So we thought we would try out this airline from a fight from Oahu to Maui - No issues there as it was about 20 minutes! But our return flight from Maui to Seattle was awful. Whilst waiting to taxi for takeoff one of the ceiling panels popped open above my seating area, above the overhead storage units. The Captain had to come over and started banging at it to try and force it back in. He succeeded but he wasn't prepared to call for an engineer to see if it was safe, presumably because he wanted to leave on time.
The entertainment system didn't work at all. Initially an announcement advised they would need to perform a system reboot and would take about 30 minutes. Nothing changed. When I spoke to one of the crew they advised me it would take 30 minutes but still nothing. So for 6 hours we had no entertainment system and no apology at all. Very boring flight.
My seat was also very uncomfortable with most of the bottom and back padding worn out. It wasn't until we landed that we I stood up the bottom section of my seat came off which explained why it was so uncomfortable. But in an emergency I would have flown forward. We had a screaming kid throughout (thank goodness for ear plugs!) and whilst the kids parents managed to sleep through it it was very annoying for the rest of us as it was a red eye flight. Cabin crew did nothing (appreciate it is difficult to calm down a kid but if the parents are asleep and ignoring it why should the rest of us suffer for their selfishness. They could have stayed awake to help their kid calm down!)
The really annoying thing was at the beginning (and at landing in Seattle) the entertainment screens showed commercials for their airline! How frustrating was that! Avoid these guys and go with Delta or Alaska (Delta are good from my experience but Alaska I dunno but can't be worse than Hawaiian)

Rescheduled Trip to Maui.

We had to cancel our flights to Maui due to COVID and the following day we tested negative. Max Wilson was very helpful in getting us back on our original flight. He even called us back several times to make sure we were on the flight we requested…….outstanding customer service and the reason we love flying with Hawaiian Airlines.

If I could score zero

If I could score zero - I would! This is the worst worst worst experience I have ever had! Never ever ever fly with them.
We paid for first class tickets - both lounges close at 6 00pm even though they have flights through to midnight. Nothing to eat or drink for anyone. Appalling.

Refuses to reimburse monies paid for refundable tickets

On 2/23/2020, my wife and I booked two round trip tickets from Honolulu to Kailua-Kona for 4/12/20 and returning 4/15/2020 as part of a Hawaiian Airlines / Hawaiian Holidays package. In March 2020, the hotel part of the package notified us that they were no longer accepting check-ins. We cancelled the airline tickets on 03/13/2020 and Hawaiian Airlines gave us a travel credit of $227.72.

On 8/13/2022, we called Hawaiian Airlines paid an extra $100.28 on top of the travel credit to buy two tickets that the ticket agent said wege "refundable" for a round trip 9/14/22 flight from Honolulu to Kailua-Kona. Due to time constraints we had to cancel that reservation. Hawaiian Airlines now says that we have two $164 travel credits apiece.

Now Hawaiian Airlines will not reimburse us the $100.28 that we paid extra for "refundable" tickets. Nor will they allow one of us to "transfer" one of the $164 travel credits to one spouse.

Hawaiian Airlines is the Bomb!

Hawaiian Airlines is the Bomb!

I flew Hawaiian to Hawaii just this week & the service was awesome!

Super friendly with a pretty laid back vibe. This one flight attendant quickly helped this pregnant lady with her carry on without being asked.

They were on time -- not like SouthWest. (you would not believe on many delays I got there) and they feed you!!

Yo! Hawaiian Air actually feeds on the plane. Oh yeah, I'm signing up for their credit card now.

Hawaiian airlines is great except for one thing. I cannot believe that they take 1 to 2 weeks to credit you back your miles after a cancellation. This would be ok if we were back in 1990 but everything is electronic now days and no excuse for them to sit on your miles for that length of time

Thousands lost

On April 5, 2022, I called Hawaiian Airlines for help with what I needed to do to bring my pet with me so I could move to Hawaii. I was walked through the process and told that I would need to drive from Jacksonville, Florida, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to be able to fly with my pet in the cabin. I was ensured that every step was correct, so I proceeded to pay for my booking and complete the necessary steps for the health certificate, FAVN test, and vaccinations for my pet so that I may get direct airport release once I arrive in Hawaii. I thought I was good to go on everything. About two weeks ago, I was going through my final checklist and called Hawaiian to make sure I had everything in order. I was informed that I would be unable to bring my pet with me and was told to call JetBlue to correct the error with the first leg of my flight. After spending hours on the phone back and forth between Hawaiian and JetBlue, I was frustrated and felt hopeless because I was being told by both airlines that I would be unable to travel with my pet. Both airlines also kept telling me to call the other one. I called Hawaiian again a few days later to talk to someone else with the hope that they would have better information for me. I was told that my reservation needed to be split into two reservation codes and that I needed to contact JetBlue so they could get me a separate booking number and add my pet to the first leg of my flight. I called JetBlue with hope and what seemed to be a solid plan, and after a couple of hours on the phone, being transferred to upper management who have the knowledge and the power, I was told that according to the contract JetBlue holds with Hawaiian, No pets are allowed on the flights connecting with Hawaiian. They apologized and told me that because of the contract between Hawaiian and JetBlue, I would have to contact Hawaiian again to resolve the issue. July 4, 2022 - I called Hawaiian for the last time, asked to speak with a supervisor, and was informed that I would have to cancel my original booking. She also told me that there was nothing Hawaiian could do to cover the added expenses for the original mistake and that my situation would be used to help train Hawaiian's employees in the future. I was issued a travel voucher to apply toward my new flight and was apologized to for the inconvenience. This is unacceptable. My original cost was $921.50, which included the entire travel to HNL. I have spent thousands of dollars, sold most of my belongings, quit my job, have been planning this move for months, and now have to rebook separate flights with Hawaiian and Jet Blue. I have incurred additional and unexpected expenses because I will have to separately check my bags with both airlines, pay pet fees with both airlines, and will now lose the ability to select extra comfort seats due to the cost and last-minute trip. My original move date was supposed to be July 7, and now I am scheduled for the 9th, which puts extra strain on my pet's health certificate deadlines and upon me. I would like to be reimbursed for the additional expense of booking separate tickets through both airlines. I would also like the cost of my bags to be covered. The JetBlue flight cost is $727.16. The additional cost for rebooking through Hawaiian is $47. This did not include the "extra comfort" I had previously booked, my bags, or my pet. Please let me know what you are willing to do to correct the original error of Hawaiian Airlines and the additional and unexpected expenses because of Hawaiian Airlines’ error. I appreciate your prompt response and resolution of this.

Called to delay my first class…

Called to delay my first class Hon/Boston one week, new flight was $189 more but they tried to charge $1600! Two calls, one hour and finally got the change for $189. Had I not pushed hard, they would have stolen $1400 from me because staff are poorly trained. Customer service is poor. I have never liked this airline, but will now never fly them again. Buyer be careful.

I refuse to be a victim of these predators

I booked flights for my wife and I on March 17 2022, with Hawaiian Airlines to fly on August 7th 2022 from Honolulu to Maui. Then in early April Sun Country discontinued their service to Honolulu. I had to make other arrangements and our new flights are direct to Maui. Since we are 4 months until we fly I asked for a refund of the $396.40 They said they could only give me vouchers. I said my wife and I are coming to Hawaii for our 40th anniversary and I doubted I would ever be able to use the flight credits. I have written to them twice using their online request system and no one has contacted me back and when I called they said do you have the number from the request. I went back in and the request does not give a number. The customer service/care is non existent. There needs to be legislation to reign these ruthless companies in from their predatory scamming of consumers money.

I rebooked my flight that I cancelled…

I rebooked my flight that I cancelled last July (it was scheduled for September) as the governer of Hawaii asked all non-essential travelers to not come to the islands, due to COVID. I had $384 credit for the three of us (my two daughters and myself). I talkd to the customer service on April 8th and rebooked the flight for the end of June. She quoted me the prices at $402 each, which was acceptable. The next day I saw that my credit card was charged $158 per person, instead of $18 per person, which would have been the difference. I called customer service immediately, but they told me they cannot do anything to fix it as the new prices were in the system. Even though I booke my flight on April 8th, when the prices were $402 per person, I was charged the next day prices, which were $158 more. They acknowledged that April 8th prices for the flight were $40w per person, but tole me they cannot do anything about it. Thet offered me to cancel my booking and rebook, but the prices have changed! I spoke to a supervisor and he was not able or willing to give me a refund and he refused to let me speak to a superior, saying that there is noone above him. In order not to lose my ticjets, I had to rebook my flight, as I had to use my credit by July. How is this possible? And why wouldn't anyone be able to to solve this, as I do have an email from April 8th, when I rebooked the flights, when the prices were $402 per person? All of them could se it in the system, but no one was willing to honor the prices I rebooked my flights?

full refund due to COVID-19

Due to COVID-19 our international flights to Hawaii were cancelled, so we had to cancel our Hawaiian island hopping flights as well. Hawaiian offered to re-schedule the flights on their web page, but for us this didn't work because we can visit Hawaii in 2 years at the earliest.
So we called them up and a very friendly lady promised to refund the fare. Only a few days later the full amount was refunded. Other airlines promised to refund the flight fare within the next 6 months, so Hawaiian exceeded our expectations. Thank you.
