Booked a car for 10:30 pm checked all…
Booked a car for 10:30 pm checked all terms and conditions at no point did it say you cannot have more than 6 points. When I got to the hire location they said I can not rent a car as I have 6 points unless I take out additional excess cover which costs 3x the value of my booking- I obviously refused. Booking .com/rentalcars .com do not know what they are doing and are trying to explain to me I should have checked if I can drive in the UK which I obviously can because I have a car which I drive daily.
When I arrived at the airport in Oslo…
When I arrived at the airport in Oslo to collect my car, the desk was closed (before stated hours on their website). Due to that I had to get an uber into the center of Oslo and then rent a car from somewhere else. Rental cars are taking zero accountability and hertz who the car hire was through are being more professional than them but as I booked through rental cars, they can’t help. Never again!
- Poor communication of document requirements upfront - Unreasonable insistence on printed documents despite digital access - Lack of flexibility at the rental desk - Misleading information regarding
I booked a car through Rentalcars.com for pickup in Preston. The booking process was straightforward, and I received confirmation emails. However, a major issue arose with the lack of clear information about required documents at the time of booking.
After the booking was confirmed, I checked the documentation requirements via the email provided. It mentioned that I needed a valid UK driving licence (which I had), along with additional documents such as identification for other drivers and a bank statement for the main driver. Nowhere during the booking process was it clearly stated that a printed hard copy of a utility bill or bank statement would be mandatory.
When we arrived at the rental desk, we were refused the car because we did not have a printed utility bill sent by post. I had access to my bank statement digitally and could have downloaded it immediately , but the staff refused to accept anything other than a physical copy. This requirement felt unreasonable and was not communicated clearly in advance.
Additionally, although we had another driver with a valid driving licence, international driving permit, and passport, they refused to proceed because the booking was not under his name. This again was handled very rigidly without any flexibility or helpful guidance.
To make matters worse, the staff member at the desk assured us that the booking would be cancelled from their side and that we would receive a full refund via Rentalcars.com. However, days later, we only received a refund for the extra insurance, not the full booking amount. This was extremely disappointing and felt misleading.
Overall, this was a frustrating experience due to:
- Poor communication of document requirements upfront
- Unreasonable insistence on printed documents despite digital access
- Lack of flexibility at the rental desk
- Misleading information regarding refunds
I would advise others to be extremely cautious and double-check all documentation requirements in advance, as the process is not transparent and can lead to unnecessary stress and financial loss.
Terrible experience
Terrible experience. Customer service was completely ineffective, responses felt generic and dismissive (Evidently written with AI), with no real attempt to resolve the issue.
I was charged for a rental that was never provided. The supplier (Sixt) refused to release the vehicle due to a condition that was not disclosed in the cancellation policy or terms and conditions. I had all the required documentation and can prove it.
Despite this, Rentalcars refused to issue a refund. I had to immediately rent a car from another provider at the same location, where I had no issues whatsoever.
The main problem was not Sixt, but Rentalcars. Their system allowed me to complete the booking, take payment, and even submit my documents in advance without flagging any issues, only for the problem to appear at the counter.
Very disappointing experience. I will not be using their service ever again.
I made a booking with the wrong dates…
I made a booking with the wrong dates and realised the mistake within minutes. I tried to correct it, but the process led me to cancel the original booking and immediately make a new reservation with the correct dates. No service was used and no car was collected.
Despite this, Rentalcars applied a 3-day cancellation charge. My issue is not simply that they have a 48-hour cancellation rule, but that their procedure appears to force cancel-and-rebook in some date-change situations, and then penalises the customer for following that process.
Customer support kept repeating the same policy wording and gave inconsistent information about escalation. Very disappointing handling of what was clearly an immediate correction of an obvious booking error.
The price is NOT what you'll pay
We paid 875 euro to rent a car from Budget through rentalcars.com and got to Budget at Frankfurt Airport only to be charged an additional $1500 for rental insurance at 40 euro per day + tax. Your rentalcars.com payment is basically treated like a voucher against Budget's rates. Not sure if this is something that only happens with Budget, but would NEVER use again.
Bad experience
Bad experience. My flight was canceled due to bad weather condition at final destination, not my fault. No willingness to help, just talking about on policy. Not possible to change reservation. Refund almost 0.
I used to be a good customer of them…
I used to be a good customer of them (probably before they got acquired by Booking.com). I liked the fact that you could use their full coverage, which was much cheaper than the one at the rental companies.
But my last experience with them convinced me to never use their services again. I had reserved a car for 07.02.2026 at Bergamo Airport with OK Mobility (another poor choice as a rental company...). They refused to give me the car because in the Rentalcars I hadn't written my full name. Rentalcars refused to change the name because the time was past my reservation time (by 10 minutes...). So they charged me 90 euros for cancelling this reservation - equivalent to no show. I had to make another reservation - for Centauro Auto, for a much bigger price (it was the Olympics period, cars were in high demand). I went to Centauro Auto office (had to take their shuttle, took a while). Once I arrived there, the people at the counter said they had no cars! They had 30 reservations and only 3 cars. So we went back to the airport and reserved directly another car, at an astronomical price this time... The problem with Rentalcars is they charged me 90 euros for that full name issue, but also they are not returning what I paid for the second reservation, which I couldn't use. Almost two months have passed and the money hasn't been returned. Their support is generic and I don't feel empathy and true help. As a consequence, I will never use their services in the future and would advise anyone against doing it.
Bad experience with customer support
Bad experience with customer support. Basically NON existent customer support. Avoid using this app.
We could not change our booking from…
We could not change our booking from 10.00 to 8.00, we tried to do it through the website as they suggest but website did not work, we could not reach them through telephone or other communication methods. After reaching through they wouldn't let us change the booking.
The worst car rental experience ever
Oh, how I wish I'd read reviews here before booking my car through rentalcars.com. Stay away! Worst experience EVER. Booked the car, paid for it up front for the week's rental, arrived after an overnight flight to a foreign airport with rentalcars.com rental voucher in hand, presented it to rental car company, and they tell me that there is no such reservation. I call rentalcars.com from the rental counter, spend over a half hour with customer service who - in spite of multiple requests to speak to a manager - tell me there is nothing they can do, basically "tough luck, no we can't help you today with the booking and can't help you make another, but would you like 15% off your next rental?". So I had no choice but to rent a car on the spot directly at the counter and pay the going daily rate (literally 5 times what I had paid for the original reservation). Then rentalcars.com would not refund what I paid them. Had to go through my credit card company to finally get the refund.
DONT book here
DONT book here. We made a reservation through Rentalcars.com. When we arrived AVIS told us our card is not accepted and they cant modify it. We called rentalcars.com and they said they can NOT cancel NOR modify.
NO CAR, MONEY GONE!
Absolutely outstanding customer service – Rentalcars.com saved my trip!
had a serious issue with Rentalcars.com’s partner in the USA (Dollar). Despite having a confirmed booking, Dollar refused to give me the car. A very stressful situation.
Rentalcars.com, however, was exceptional.
I reached a real human agent within minutes, and he immediately took ownership of the problem. He helped me cancel the original booking and arranged a smooth rebooking on the spot.
Afterwards, the customer service team followed up proactively, resolved everything in no time, and refunded all additional costs I had because of Dollar’s mistake.
Super fast responses, super friendly staff, and a level of support that went far beyond what I expected.
They solved everything to my fullest satisfaction.
Highly recommended — this is how customer service should be!
MANAGE MY BOOKING INOPERABLE
I made a booking and then needed to extend it. I read the instructions and it said to go to "manage my booking". I did that and had a prompt screen for email and booking ref number ehihc I filled in and was told to go to my inbox and open a new email and click the secure link sent to access my account. Sadly all that link did was to offer me the same email address and booking ref boxes to fill. Did this 6 times both on the app and PC. I then utilised the chat help which was equally useles and sent the same link with teh same results. Do NOT book through this company - their online system does not function
Really disapponting experience
Booked a car through Rentalcars.com but was refused at pickup because I didn’t have a physical credit card - something not clearly stated in the confirmation email (it only said “credit card in driver’s name” - which I had, just virtual).
Had to rent from another company right next door with no issues, but at 3x the price.
Customer service was poor: multiple agents, template replies, no real answers, and no refund—even after they acknowledged unclear communication during the booking, they apologized for that, but still no refund.
For anyone from RentalCars reading this - the case number is: 754135012
Be careful - important requirements are not clearly communicated.
PLEASE DO NOT USE MISS LEADING
(1 star)
Very disappointed with this company – the cancellation process is completely misleading and highly unprofessional.
I had to cancel my booking because I was allocated an electric vehicle, which was not suitable for an urgent trip to visit my father in hospital in Manchester.
The real issue, however, was the cancellation process itself. The original booking reference I was sent (1200633756) simply did not work, meaning I couldn’t cancel the booking at all. I spent over an hour trying to resolve this, only to then be given a completely different reference (782 904 821) by EuroCar, which finally allowed me to cancel.
This is incredibly confusing and clearly a flaw in their system.
Despite all of this, I am now being charged £212. Given the circumstances and the time wasted trying to cancel using the incorrect details they provided, this feels completely unfair.
The whole experience has been frustrating, stressful, and far below any reasonable standard of service.
I will not be using this company again and would strongly advise others to think twice before booking, any 3rd party booking for car rental.. go direct its cheaper and better customers service with real people who really care and understand
No confirmation received, but money charged. Service desk doesn't help, just send standard answers again and again.
We have ordered a rental car for upcoming vacation. Order was properly setup, money charged to credit card immediately. But we have never received any confirmation email or any other correspondence. After contacting the service chat, we have been promised help and that they investigate about it. Since then 1,5 weeks are gone, every time we ask for the status we get promised again that they will come back to us soon. Vacation starts already in three days, still haven't heard anything or got the money back. It's very disappointing!
Terrible service with double charging on top
Our booking with Rentalcars and Hertz went badly from start to finish, and I want to share the full experience so others know what to expect.
We originally booked a 4x4 through Rentalcars, with Hertz as the provider. Two weeks before travelling, my wife contacted Hertz directly to update the collection time and provided our flight number, exactly as instructed. We assumed the booking had been updated correctly.
When we arrived at Geneva Airport, the Hertz paperwork clearly stated that the car must be collected from the French sector. At the airport information desk on the Swiss side, we were told the French Hertz desk was closed and were directed to the Swiss Hertz desk instead.
After queueing for around 30 minutes, the staff at the Swiss desk told us we must collect the car from the French side, despite us explaining that we had already been told it was closed. We then had to go back through security with all our luggage to reach the French sector, only to find the desk was indeed closed — and we were told by a neighbouring rental company that it is always closed on Sundays.
Hertz had booked us a Sunday collection in a location that is not open on Sundays. This made it impossible to follow their own instructions.
We then had to go back through security again with our luggage and return to the Swiss Hertz desk. When we finally reached the front of the queue again, the staff member agreed to help us. By this point we had been dealing with this for a long time and were close to giving up.
We had booked a 4x4 for a ski trip and were told we would receive a Kia EV9 or equivalent. The EV9 was not available, and several different cars were mentioned. Eventually we were offered a Lexus SUV. At no point do I recall agreeing to pay extra for an upgrade. We were stressed, delayed, and simply trying to get on the road before our apartment key collection deadline. When the bill was presented, we reluctantly paid the additional £200+ just to move forward.
We then took the bus to the car collection point, where the problems continued. We waited over an hour while staff tried to locate the vehicle. First we were told it was being collected, then washed, then that it could not be found at all. The manager there eventually phoned the Hertz desk in the terminal, clearly frustrated, and asked what was going on. We were then told another car would be sent.
We accepted the replacement simply to end the ordeal. It was not an SUV as originally booked, but a Mercedes. It was a nice car, but not ideal for snowy conditions. Still, we were relieved to finally leave the airport after several hours of delays.
When we returned home and checked our statements, we discovered another issue. We had already paid £301.89 on 7 January for the original booking. At the airport on 1 February, Hertz did not just charge us the upgrade — they charged us the full amount again, plus the upgrade, totalling CHF 576.32 (£547.35). In total, we had now paid £849.24 for a booking that originally cost just over £300. We had even handed the booking invoice to the Hertz staff member, so it is unclear how this happened.
The duplicate payment should have been refunded immediately. Given the series of problems, delays, incorrect instructions, and the fact that the upgrade was not requested by us, I believe the upgrade charge should also have been refunded. Some might argue that a full refund would be appropriate considering the circumstances, but I only asked for the duplicate payment to be returned and for the rest to be reviewed fairly.
Even if we ignore the pickup‑time issue — despite us providing the flight number in advance — the number of separate problems still requires proper resolution.
I ask Hertz and Rentalcars to consider how this situation would feel if it happened to them and their families: hours of delays, contradictory instructions, closed desks, repeated queues, stress, and then discovering you have been charged more than £800 for a booking that should have cost £300.
Based on this experience, we will avoid both companies in the future. We will also check Trustpilot reviews before booking any future rental cars.
Sharp practice
I live in France booked car to collect at LHR on the internet from Rental Cars using a UK sterling credit card. The quote was in £GBP. Booking.com which owns Rental Cars changed the £GBP price into Euros , I was then charged a non-sterling fee from my cc provider. The amount was small but this is an unacceptable practice and I will avoid Rental Cars and Booking.com from now on.
Refund took 6 weeks
I had a difficult experience with a refund for a cancelled car rental booking made through Rentalcars and Trip.com.
The booking was cancelled on February 10, and I was told the refund would be processed.
Rentalcars informed me that the refund was sent to Trip.com on February 12. However, Trip.com said they were still investigating and that they had not received a response from Rentalcars. Because of this, I was stuck between both companies for more than a month, with each company referring me to the other.
During this time, I did not receive my refund and had to contact customer service many times and provide my credit card statements as proof. In the end, I had to request a chargeback through my bank to get my money back.
The biggest problem was the lack of communication between Rentalcars and Trip.com, which caused a very long delay in the refund process. Customers should not be stuck between two companies when trying to get a refund for a cancelled booking.
