They took our money but didn’t provide…

They took our money but didn’t provide us a car.
When we arrived at the airport and tried to pay, they didn’t want our card even though it’s a visa. We asked for an explanation. They said it’s debit, but we have used it to pay for many car-rentals in the past. And they accepted it for all the other payments, so it would have been great if they hadn’t accepted the card there. So we would have known that there was a problem.
But we said “okay, can we do something else?”.
They said we could pay 24 euros pr. day for full insurance even though we already have insurance.
We said that we would consider and talked it through. It’s a lot of money for nothing.
It was late and we had had a long day flying. So we said “ we will pay the money but we really don’t understand and we feel like you have tricked us”. And that made them so angry that they refused to rent the car to us. But they told us that we could get the money back because they had refused. But no…
We lost a lot of money and was left in the airport at night without a car.

So don’t ever rent a car here…

To autoeurope:
Yes they did and when we accepted the expensive solution they got mad and refused renting the car to us. Because they knew they would keep the money anayway.

Hello Signe.

As it is stated in the voucher that lists up the requirements with your chosen supplier, you must have a valid credit card at the time of pick up to be able to leave the security deposit.

A Visa Dankort counts as a debit card and that will not work. The supplier offered you a solution by buying their full insurance to work around the fact you didn't have the required credit card.

Kind regards,
Auto Europe

Fake marketing

They claim that they offer free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup and write it in all emails and on their website.
When you cancel, they just refer to their standard T&C point 20 in the middle of a closely written section where it says that it does not apply to all cars and all your money is lost by change or cancellation.

Very poor service and fake marketing

07/10/2020

07/10/2020: I tried booking a car on the Danish Auto Europe Website. As a French national living in Denmark, I could not understand anything on the website and tried to change the language. I could not change the language, only the country of residence. So I switched to Europe and booked the car.

10/10/2020: I could not pick up the car at Europcar.
Reason : "you booked a tax-free car and you are a Danish resident". I called AutoEurope and they said they have never heard of a distinction between tourist tax free-car and other cars. Response : "contact customer service, there is nothing I can do about your reservation"

12/10/2020: I call customer service. Their response: "it is written in the conditions that these rates are not valid for Danish residents, there is nothing we can do. Advice: find someone to help you book on the danish website".

This meant that I lost 200 euros because of a technicality I could not avoid.
1. I could not have booked a car on the French website because I am living in Denmark. They would have given me a tax-free car.
2. I could not have booked a car on the EU website because rates are not available for Danish resident.
3. I could not have booked a car on the Danish website because no English translation is available and no one of a sound mind would sign terms and conditions they cannot fully understand, or terms that have the risk of being translated poorly.

I was also disappointed in their handling of the situation: the 1st representative hung up on me, the second indirectly told me that I should book on the Danish website even if I do not understand. No solution to my problem was found, and they gave me no possibility to remain a client even if I wanted to.

I would like a refund of my booking. I lost 200 euros for a reservation because of a technicality I could not have avoided.

I look forward to your prompt response on this matter. As recommended by Trading Standards, I would like to keep a complete record of my case, so please reply to this email address.

Reply from Auto Europe Danmark

Dear Jeanne,
We are sorry for the situation you are in, but I will try to explain what happened.
The prices on the domestic website is different compared to the other sites, because of the danish taxation regulations. On the Europcar Terms & Conditions on the EU site, it is clearly stated that “Rates are not valid or available for Danish/Greenland residents.” This is also written on the voucher that were sent to you after booking. You made the order quite some time before pickup, and had time to read the voucher. Auto Europe can cancel your reservation up until 48 hours before pickup time without any cost for you, but after that time, we already paid the supplier, and a refund is not possible.
Thank you for your understanding.

Best regards,
Carsten,

The Ryanair of car rental - in the worst way

We truly feel like we were provided the same low budget very low quality service that you would expect from other firms like Ryanair.
We were declined our rental at the counter in Rome since I couldn't present my physical credit card - since they needed to photocopy it (the booking was done in debit card). We were told the only way our booking wasn't lost would be to pay additional 25% of the price to make the booking in my girlfriends name and use her credit card. We bacisally had no choice.
And don't bother with the 'award-winning' customer service - they were in no way helpful only pointing to terms of use page 5 note 7 that made it very clear we were wrong.
Well we are definetly never coming back, and like booking a flight you should stick with one of the more expensive ones if you want to avoid the risk of loosing your booking to technicalities.

Reply from Auto Europe Danmark

Dear Christoffer,

We apologize for your unfortunate experience, but it is stated both on the website before booking and on the voucher you receive after booking that VISA / Dankort can not be used for collection. This is because Dankort is only a credit card in Denmark, as soon as you come outside Denmark it is a debit card, which means that you can withdraw money on it and also buy things, but you cannot make blockages without withdrawing, as the suppliers do. If you look at the text on your card, it says "Debit" and not "Credit" on it. The text on the website and on the voucher is as follows: "Although payment to Auto Europe can be made by debit card, such as Visa / Dankort, you must bring an international credit card in the main drivers name (the name given on the voucher) to the car rental company at the destination for blocking. of the deposit. Car rental companies do not accept debit cards. "
The solution with paying extra and getting the car that way, is simply good will from the supplier as a way of solving the issue.

Again, we apologize for your experience and wish you all the best.

Yours sincerely
Auto Europe

Used autoeurope on week long trip to Hungary. Provider was Alamo. For a discount provider I thought the service was OK with appropriate warnings reasonably clearly marked. Alamo was excellent (at price) and strongly recommended if ever picking up car from Budapest airport on a budget.

Crap customer service and I paid for a service i didn't get

I'm a french guy living in Denmark and I booked my car via autoeurope FR but once I went to Hertz to pick up the car, the agent told me the contract autoeurope made for me is not available because I need to pay extra taxe.
I had to rebook something way more expensive and autoeurope doesn't want to refund me as they were offering a wrong contract with wrong total cost.
On top of that, their customer service is crap, they hang up while calling them, and not offering any help.

Hi Guillaume,

We are very sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with your car rental. It is correct though that when you are a Danish resident, you need to go to the Danish website to book your car rental. It needs to be booked there because there are different rules, for example tax rules which you wrote yourself, that apply in certain countries determined by where you live, where one of there countries is Denmark. If that is not done, you unfortunately won't be able to pick up the car. This is written on the voucher, and that is one of the reasons why, we highly recommend our customers to read the voucher, before they pick up the car.

I can see though that your reservation has been cancelled now with a fee of 30 euros. The remaining amount will be refunded to the card used to book the car rental within 5-10 business days.

Best regards,
Martin

Not possible to pay a upgrade.

It is , incredible that you cant upgrade your car to a diffrent adress and tax klass. If the information about tax class is not provided on the Homepage. It is like they want custumers in corona times .

NEVER AGAIN!

I would NEVER recommend this car rental, NEVER!
Initially, there were some communication issues. I wrote back and forth with a lady in order to know if we could rent a GPS. A conversation were I send 5 emails as she did not understand and kept replying that there was no GPS included in our rental. Duh, that’s why I asked if I can rent one?

Secondly, we got a car without fuel so we had to hand it in on an empty tank to not lose money on fuel. Being that that is impossible obviously we lost money on fuel. Sneaky way for the company to make money off you!

Thirdly, we were fully insured and was in a car crash. But none of the phone numbers (tried approx.. 7 even the UK, US and Danish line) were working and the only guy we managed to get a hold on, did not speak English and said (two times) a lady would call us back. It is now one week later and no one has called me back? Oh, and then they started to just hang up on us when we tried to call them again (They were the only people answering).
So much for being open 24 hours? It was a 3 hour long and stressful situation. We did not speak the native language nor did we know what to do in relation to the insurance. We were just handed (by the other guy in the crash) a piece of paper – in a foreign language - to sign. Great, I love signing documents with my name not knowing what I sign!! We were stuck in this situation for 2-3 hours and also tried email the customer service. That email correspondence was a joke: They refused to call us, was not helping and all their replies were full of pre-written responses that really displayed the fact that they did not read the actual email I send (at one point they told me to contact the police if I had been robbed? How they ever got the impression I was robbed, beats me?).

Not a great company in a situation like that, not even with the full insurance (An extra cost)!
We ended up given the car back one day early as to deal with the documents (Missing out on a day where we paid to have the car). No one spoke English there either and in general had no time for us. But did have time for a 15 minutes coffee break before dropping us off at the drop off point?

Overall, it was a messy situation and no help was to be found within the 3 hours we desperately tried. No help was giving on the day we handed over the car. We lost money on fuel and had the car one day less than intended/paid. This, despite us paying for full insurance and their “so-called” 24/7 service.

I have rented cars before (In both Europe, US, Australia and Asia) and have never had such a poor treatment!

Other companies might cost a bit more but it will be so worth it! I do not wish for anyone to be in the situation we were left in.

oh, and its now 3 weeks since they contacted me in relation to the insurance and asked my side of the story. I have yet to get ANY kind of response though I asked for a reply and a explanation of what the next steps would be.

EDIT: 3 weeks ago they asked me to e-mail my side of the "crash" story. (Wuhu, finally one that speaks english and seems nice).
Now, 3 weeks later I asked for a status and he simply replied:

"Could you write me down what did it happend?
Otherwise we have to give your details to the Slovakian police and authorities."

Are you kidding me? I Send it 3 weeks ago and you just replied to my email - me, asking for a response on what I wrote - and disregard anything I wrote and ask the exact same question you asked 3 weeks ago?

WHAT IS HAPPENING!
