Talking Money is a charity that provides free, independent and specialist money advice to individuals and their families. Our team of friendly advisers can help with lots of types of money worries from rent and council tax arrears to credit card debt and benefit overpayments. We can work with you to help you prioritise your bills and debts, understand your benefits and explore ways to increase your income. We offer our service via a range of channels to suit you, be that face-to-face, telephone, video calling, webchat, SMS or WhatsApp messaging. We sometimes have to close our services for a short period because we are full. For details on the availability of our services please see our website. We used to lead Debt Free South West, which was a regional partnership of 9 advice agencies that each provided debt advice services to their communities. Debt Free South West no longer exists as a partnership. Each of the agencies that were part of it (including us) are very much still operating, so please feel free to contact those agencies individually if you need help in your local area - they are currently listed in the locations section of this website. Money Advice West were only able to…
Money Advice West were only able to refer me to a local debt advice service. I applied for a Debt Relief Order through this service, but it was declined because I had disposed of assets (removed my name from an ex partners mortgage) within the last two years. Had I been correctly advised of the process and requirements of a DRO, I would have sought alternative arrangements. My debts are now in the process of being managed by collection agencies. Not happy.

The people I came into contact with…
The people I came into contact with were on the whole friendly and helpful even if a little too inclined, to my mind, to leap to the calculator and give an answer based solely upon the figures it gave.
While money is money, people are people, and what may be, at least in theory, the best course of action, it may not be the most practicable for the client. That's been my experience, at any rate.
